ST. THOMAS PARISH EPISCOPAL CHURCH DUPONT CIRCLE Second Sunday after the Epiphany January 14, 2018 Holy Eucharist
Prelude What Wonderous Love is This American Folk Hymn Hymn Ye Servants of God Paderborn
Opening Acclamation Celebrant: Blessed be the one, holy, and living God. People: Glory to God for ever and ever. Hymn of Praise Gloria Gloria in excelsis God s peo - ple on earth.
The Collect of the Day Celebrant: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Celebrant: Let us pray. A LMIGHTY GOD, whose Son our Savior Jesus Christ is the light of the world: Grant that your people, illumined by your Word and Sacraments, may shine with the radiance of Christ's glory, that he may be known, worshipped, and obeyed to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, now and for ever. Amen. All sit for the first lesson. Reading 1 Samuel 3:1-10 Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the Lord under Eli. The word of the Lord was rare in those days; visions were not widespread. At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his room; the lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was. Then the Lord called, Samuel! Samuel! and he said, Here I am! and ran to Eli, and said, Here I am, for you called me. But he said, I did not call; lie down again. So he went and lay down. The Lord called again, Samuel! Samuel got up and went to Eli, and said, Here I am, for you called me. But he said, I did not call, my son; lie down again. Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. The Lord called Samuel again, a third time. And he got up and went to Eli, and said, Here I am, for you called me. Then Eli perceived that the Lord was calling the boy. Therefore Eli said to Samuel, Go, lie down; and if he calls you, you shall say, Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening. So Samuel went and lay down in his place. Now the Lord came and stood there, calling as before, Samuel! Samuel! And Samuel said, Speak, for your servant is listening. Lector: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.
Psalm 139: 1-5; Cantor sings refrain once, then congregation repeats refrain Psalm is spoken in unison 1 Lord, you have searched me out and known me; you know my sitting down and my rising up; you discern my thoughts from afar. 2 You trace my journeys and my resting-places and are acquainted with all my ways. 3 Indeed, there is not a word on my lips, but you, O Lord, know it altogether. 4 You press upon me behind and before and lay your hand upon me. 5 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is so high that I cannot attain to it. 12 For you yourself created my inmost parts; you knit me together in my mother's womb. 13 I will thank you because I am marvelously made; your works are wonderful, and I know it well. 14 My body was not hidden from you, while I was being made in secret and woven in the depths of the earth. 15 Your eyes beheld my limbs, yet unfinished in the womb; all of them were written in your book; they were fashioned day by day, when as yet there was none of them. 16 How deep I find your thoughts, O God! how great is the sum of them! 17 If I were to count them, they would be more in number than the sand; to count them all, my life span would need to be like yours. All repeat refrain twice
Sequence Hymn Arise, Shine Ruth Cunningham The Gospel is processed into the midst of the people to be read The Holy Gospel John 1:43-51 Priest: People: J The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you Lord Christ. ESUS DECIDED TO GO TO GALILEE. He found Philip and said to him, Follow me. Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael and said to him, We have found him about whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth. Nathanael said to him, Can anything good come out of Nazareth? Philip said to him, Come and see. When Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, he said of him, Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit! Nathanael asked him, Where did you get to know me? Jesus answered, I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you. Nathanael replied, Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel! Jesus answered, Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these. And he said to him, Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man. Priest: The Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to you Lord Christ. Sermon Please observe a moment of silence following the sermon. The Rev. Alex Dyer
The Nicene Creed W E BELIEVE in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen The Prayers of the People All remain standing as able Celebrant: To God who welcomes all in love and calls us to follow faithfully, let us pray for the good of the church and the concerns of those in need saying, We call upon you in your Temple: speak, for your servant is listening. Intercessor: Awaken us Lord, to hear what you speaking to us today. Open our ears, our eyes, and our hearts to your presence. We call upon you in your Temple: speak, for your servant is listening.
As prophets called leaders to care for those on the margins of society, we pray that you would guide our country and our leaders to the ways of justice and righteousness for all of your children. We call upon you in your Temple: speak, for your servant is listening. As the prophet Isaiah rang out, Arise, shine; for your light has come; empower your Church across the world, O God, to ring out the Good News of the Light of your son Jesus, which pierces even the deepest darkness. We call upon you in your Temple: speak, for your servant is listening. We pray for those who consider themselves inadequate to the tasks before them and dismiss or avoid your voice. Give them the courage and the conviction to accomplish your purpose. We call upon you in your Temple: speak, for your servant is listening. We pray, O Lord, for those in want and need - for those of us and of the larger community who suffer in body or in soul. We remember those who suffer in silence, especially those living in abusive homes, those living with addiction, and those who suffer from mental illness. We call upon you in your Temple: speak, for your servant is listening. God of justice, show us how to remove the barriers of our lives that keep us from one another, barriers we construct based on skin color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or political party. May we hear, and follow, graciously and love as you love. We call upon you in your Temple: speak, for your servant is listening. By your power you raise our bodies into union with you, remember those who have died, especially those who have died alone. We call upon you in your Temple: speak, for your servant is listening. Celebrant: Insistent God, by night and day you summon your slumbering people. Hear the cries of those who pray to you in your temple. Stir us with your voice and enlighten our lives with your grace that we give ourselves fully to Christ's call to mission and ministry. Amen. The Peace Celebrant: The peace of The Lord be always with you. People: And also with you. Announcements (see insert) Offertory Sentence The offering is collected to support the work of sharing God s love with the world and living out God s mission. The bread and wine are brought forward to the altar as the Priest prepares the altar. Offertory Anthem Bread of Life Raney
The Great Thanksgiving At St. Thomas Parish, we invite all those who seek God and a deeper life in Christ to receive the sacrament of Holy Eucharist. To receive communion, take the consecrated bread in the palm of your hand. Eat the bread and then drink from the cup when it is offered to you. If you do not wish to receive the consecrated bread or wine but would like a blessing, please come forward and cross your arms with your hands on your shoulders and a priest will provide a blessing. Celebrant: People: Celebrant: People: Celebrant: People: The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise. IT IS RIGHT AND A GOOD and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Almighty God, Creator of heaven and earth. Because in the mystery of the Word made flesh, you have caused a new light to shine in our hearts, to give the knowledge of your glory in the face of your son Jesus Christ our Lord. Therefore, we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who forever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

To you indeed be glory, Almighty God, because on the night before he died, your Son, Jesus Christ, took bread; when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, gave it to his disciples, and said: Take, eat this is my body which is given for you; do this for the remembrance of me. After supper, he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, This cup is the new covenant in my blood poured out for you; do this as often as you drink it for the remembrance of me. Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: We remember Christ s death, We proclaim Christ s resurrection, We await Christ s coming in glory; Loving God, recalling now Christ s death and resurrection, we ask you to accept this our sacrifice of praise. Send your Holy Spirit upon this bread and this wine and upon us and our celebration that we may be fed with the body and blood of your Son and be filled with your life and goodness. Strengthen us to do your work, and to be your body in the world. Unite us in Christ and give us your peace. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN. The Lord s Prayer As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray, O UR FATHER in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.
Fraction Anthem The Celebrant breaks the consecrated Bread and after a moment of silence, all sing. Celebrant: The gifts of God for the people of God. Communion is distributed at a station at the foot of the steps to the altar. All enter via the center aisle (alternating sides for each person) and return via the side aisles.
Hymn Day by Day Summer Prayer after Communion Said by all, standing. G ENEROUS LORD, in word and eucharist we have proclaimed the mystery of your love: help us so to live out our days that we may be signs of your wonders in the world; through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. Blessing Life is short, and we do not have much time to gladden the hearts of those who make the journey with us. So, be swift to love, and make haste to be kind. And the blessing of God, who made us, who loves us, and who travels with us be with you now and forever. Amen.
Hymn I have decided Indian Folk Melody Dismissal Celebrant: Let us go forth in the name of Christ! People: Thanks be to God! Postlude Sonata in C Major Mozart
