EARLIEST SETTLEMENT IN ROME Judge Norman Fletcher described our speaker, Jim Langford, as a Renaissance man. His topic was archeology in northwest Georgia but he began with a brief overview of the area s methamphetamine addition disaster. He s executive director of the Georgia Meth Project. As president of the Society of Georgia Archaeology, Mr. Langford said the rivers that join in Rome have changed little geologically in 100,000 years. The ancestors of the Creek Indians were the first to settle along their banks in strings of villages; the total population was around 25,000 in the 1500s. The rivers were the highways to Alabama, Tennessee and beyond. See Langford, page 2

Mr. Langford said when the Spanish came to colonize and bring Christianity in the mid-16th century, they celebrated a mass approximately where Coosa County Club is today. In addition to their religion, the Europeans brought diseases to which the Indians had no immunities, so by the 1700s, few Native Americans remained. The Cherokee came down from Tennessee and North Carolina in the mid-1700s and that tribe is the one most familiar to people. The Creeks, however, were here for thousands of years. Scattered over northwest Georgia are sites collapsed houses that are time capsules. Among the most interesting artifacts Mr. Langford illustrated was a copper inlay from a bible with a picture of the Annunciation carved on it, probably made in Mexico City in the 1500s. The figures are dressed in Aztec garb. It had been presented to the Indians and then buried with a 13-year-old boy. Mr. Langford spent months working with a microscope removing the dirt and identifying it. It s owned privately in Gordon County where it was found.
