1 Jasper Georgia Rotary Web: April 26, 2017 Giving Thanks By Steve Lawrence Giving Thanks We would be remiss in fulfilling test two of our 4-way test (Is it fair to all concerned) if we did not acknowledge those who gave so much to help us accomplish our dream of having our Peace Pole, Rotary sign and flagpole. Past President Jimmy Thompson gave a substantial amount through the generosity of Georgia Power. President Kay received a donation through Rensant Bank. She was also a founding member and past chair of the Holiday Market. They donated a sum large enough to cover our entire cost for our Rotary Sign. Past President Jack Short donated much time choosing the correct flag and pole for our Rotary Peace Park. Excellent Choice! We are still accepting donations and welcome all to join us on May 24, 2017 in our celebration of peace. Let s remember to give our thanks to these generous companies and individuals. 2 Our Flag is Flying By Steve Lawrence Our Flag is Flying Our new flag is flying over Jasper Rotary Peace Park. The flag, the Rotary Peace park sign and the Peace Pole have now all been installed. How very appropriate to have had our Peace Pole and Rotary sign set on Good Friday! The flag and flag pole were set by Adam and Shaun Bell of Smokey Mountain Signs. They did excellent work and were very helpful to us. The marble Peace Pole and sign are absolutely stunning examples of the level of local craftsmanship available in the Jasper community. Reserve May 24, 2017 to join District Governor Kim Waters, other district Rotarian leaders, State and local elected officials, Jasper community leaders and all Jasper Rotarians as we dedicate our Rotary Peace Park with our very own Georgia Marble Peace Pole.

3 PEACE POLE DEDICATION AT JASPER ROTARY PEACE PARK By Steve Lawrence MAY 24th-PEACE POLE DEDICATION AT ROTARY PEACE PARK On Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at 12:00 P.M., the Rotary Club of Jasper will dedicate our Peace Pole. The dedication ceremony will be held at Rotary Peace Park located behind the Boys and Girls Club of Jasper. The GPS address is 101 Freedom Way, Jasper, Georgia. One of Rotary Internationals primary areas of focus is the promotion of peace throughout the world. Peace Poles are recognized as the most prominent international symbol and monument for peace. They symbolize the oneness of humanity and our common wish for a world at peace. Peace Poles bear the message, May Peace Prevail on Earth in the different languages of the world. In considering a Peace Pole for their park, the Rotary Club of Jasper recognized the unique opportunity available to us as the home of Georgia Marble. Our Peace Pole was manufactured locally by Blue Ridge Marble and carved from the same marble as was used in Washington, DC to build the Lincoln Memorial. Placed on a marble base, our monument totals ten ft. in heigth. On each of the four sides of the pole, two different languages will display the Peace Pole message of, May Peace Prevail on Earth for a total of eight different languages. Our Peace Pole displays English, Cherokee, French, Esperanto, Spanish, German, Italian and Russian languages will also mark the 100th year of the beginning of the Rotary Foundation. This Peace Pole will serve to commemorate that event for the Rotary Club of Jasper. We invite you to join the Rotary Club of Jasper in this celebration of peace. By Emily Koerner, a former Interactor, native of Toms River, New Jersey, and student at the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania, USA I often wonder what other people think about when they hear the word Rotarian. Since I was about 10 years old, I attended many service events with my dad (a member and past president of the Central Ocean Rotary Club in Toms River, New Jersey). The members welcomed me with open arms, laughs, and, of course, a ton of work to be done. I learned about camaraderie and good work ethic at a young age. I also learned not every family was like my own. Not everyone has my abilities, my health, or my amazing parents. Not everyone has food at their table, a steady job, or a home. But together, the Rotarians work hard to extend a helping hand to anyone struggling to lift them up. For me, Rotarian is a synonym for family. For over ten years, I ve attended lunch meetings and listened to their guest speakers and their discussions about the future for the club. We ve painted houses, planted dune grass, auctioned gift baskets, and much more. My Rotary club faced the challenges of gaining new members, losing old ones, and enduring Hurricane Sandy. However, they ve always grown and never failed to help those in need. They refuse to give up caring for others as well as each other. Just like Rotary, I, too, have grown the past decade. I joined community service groups throughout middle school, high school, and my university. I was president of my Interact club. I have spent ten amazing days at a girls orphanage in Mexico City. My Rotarian family has given me hope for the future and inspiration to push myself every day. I have no other way to repay them for their influence and support except to lead my life as a true Rotarian would. My request for other Rotary clubs is to reach out to children or teenagers and encourage them to volunteer or work alongside you. Perhaps they will be a future member. Perhaps they won t. But the experiences of witnessing your passion and compassion for others will leave a mark and last a lifetime.
