2 Ronald A. Seale, 33 Sovereign Grand Commander Stephen M. Munsinger, 33 Sovereign Grand Insepctor General in Colorado We extend the right hand of friendship and welcome you to the seventy-sixth Reunion of the Colorado West Bodies of the Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry. Congratulations on taking this next step in your Masonic journey. The Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite first arrived in the United States at New Orleans in It came from the continent of Europe, from Bordeuax, France, under the Order of the Royal Secret. It was transmitted in the shipping lanes, and first held a presence in the West Indies. Rapidly Lodges sprang up at Albany, New York (1767); Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1781); and at Charleston, South Carolina (1783). In 1786, the Grand Constitutions extended the degrees of the rite from the original 25 (as recorded in the French Constitution of 1762) to 33 degrees. The Grand Constitutions also provided for the Supreme Council of Thirty-Third and Last Degree, which would govern all appendant bodies, under two Supreme Councils, the Southern and Northern Jurisdiction. This name was changed on December 4, 1802 to The Supreme Council of the Thirty- Third Degree for the United States of America. The name Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite did not appear until 1804, as recorded in an agreement between the Supreme Council of France and the Grand Orient of France. By 1859, with Grand Commander Albert Pike at the helm, it became the name of choice, and has stuck ever since.

3 The Scottish Rite is thus a descendent of the Order of the Royal Secret, a rite developed in France in the 18th Century. Despite it s name, it is not Scottish per se. Although, allusions to the Templar s stronghold in Scotland, after the mass arrest in 1307, persist. However, the AASR is perhaps best described as American. It was here, in the United States, that it was accepted, modified, appended, and, ultimately, held fast. The Supreme Council of the Southern Jurisdiction recognizes 40 Supreme Councils and four National Grand Lodges practicing rites that include the Scottish Rite across the world. Each has recognized the Grand Constitutions of 1762 and 1786, with minor differences embraced by the particular needs of individual bodies. Principal Officers Montrose Lodge of Perfection Lloyd Stahl, 32º Venerable Master Glenwood Chapter of Rose Croix William Marshall, 32º Wise Master Gunnison Council of Kadosh Silan Smith, 32º KCCH Commander Grand Junction Consistory Jerald Conyers, 32º KCCH Master of Kadosh

Consequently, it must not be removed when the flag is passing, while saying the Pledge of Allegiance, or participating in prayer. On such occasions as the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance or performance of the National Anthem in song or music, the cap remains on the head and the Scottish Rite Mason places his right hand over his heart. When praying the cap remains in place but the head is slightly bowed and the hands are placed in the Sign of the Good Shepherd : The left arm folded over the right with fingers outstretched and touching the shoulders comfortably. This dignified position reflects the compassionate spirit of the Scottish Rite in recalling the Good Shepherd as he carried a lamb over his neck, holding its feet with his crossed hands. The Sign of The Good Shepherd

22 THE SCOTTISH RITE CREED The cause of human progress is our cause, the enfranchisement of human thought our supreme wish, the freedom of human conscience our mission, and the guarantee of equal rights to all people everywhere, the end of our contention. To Impliment This THE SUPREME COUNCIL 33 FAVORS 1. The American public school, nonpartisan, nonsectarian, democratic, for all the children of all the people. 2. The inculcation of patriotism, respect for law and order, and undying loyalty to the Constitution of the United States of America. 3. The compulsory use of English as the language of instruction in the grammar grades of our public schools. 4. Adequate provision in the American public schools for the education of the alien populations in the principles of American institutions and ideals of citizenship. 5. The entire separation of church and state, and opposition to every attempt to appropriate public monies - Federal, state or local directly or indirectly, for the support of sectarian or private institutions. ROSE CROIX FUNERAL Many families of the deceased to Scottish Rite Masons (Consistory), do not know that the Rose Croix Funeral Service is available to them. This is a very impressive and meaningful ceremony lasting from 15 to 17 minutes. It is designed to be given in a chapel or church, but can be adapted to the grave site. It is not to be used to supplement the regular Masonic Committal Service; it can be used in conjunction with the Blue Lodge Funeral Service.
