1 Cowboy Bulletin Wyoming Knights of Columbus I AM MY BROTHER S KEEPER Dat e: Jul y /2012 State Officers Take Office On July 1 st the Wyoming State Council Officers, elected during the April 2011 State convention, took up their new leadership positions. Donald Scott (Gillette) assumes the leadership role as our new State Deputy. His staff includes: C. Joe Welte (Torrington) State Secretary, Paul Puebla (Torrington) State Treasurer, John Benedik Jr. (Laramie) State Advocate, and James Venjohn (Casper) State Warden. Patrick Daugherty assumes his new position as Immediate Past State Deputy. We also welcome Rev. Father Thomas Ogg as our new State Chaplain. Don Scott State Deputy Ideas presented into action. Council 3477 is hosting zational meeting in Gillette. Greetings Brother Knights and Patrons, It s with pleasure that I welcome and greet you at the beginning of the Fraternal year. I look forward to serving you as your State Deputy. I just returned from the training at New Haven, CT, and I am anxious to put some of the our summer organi- Installation of officers will be at St. Matthews Catholic Church. Officers, DD s and Directors and Chairs attending this meeting will be working hard to put together the strategies that will propel our successful year in service to our fellowman. This year s theme is II Am My Brother s Keeper. The neatest thing is: we Knights of Columbus already know how to do this. Our focus will be to make this quality a higher priority in our lives. Focusing on membership, we will develop and refine our programs to make being in the Knights of Columbus front and center to all. Every day, people leave their homeland in great numbers, and come to the Land of the free and home of the brave. Our great nation is made up of diverse, dynamic, and hard working people, who strive to realize the American dream. Each year, we celebrate that freedom in various forms with barbeques, picnics, and gather to view those grand firework dis- aahs! plays with oohs and On this day, let us proudly wave our nation s standard and renew our pledgee to uphold the rights of all to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Let us also remember in our prayers those who gave their lives and continue to serve so that we might have the freedom to celebrate this anniversary of the birth of freedom.

We are, as always First and Always Catholic I want to express my appreciation to the Officers and Directors who have agreed to serve this Fraternal Year. There are a few positions that I still need to fill. I would very much appreciate your kind and prayerful consideration if and when you are asked to serve. It would be because of your gifted talents that you are asked to serve in the capacity as one of the leaders in the Wyoming Knights of Columbus. I look forward to seeing and working with all of you at the Gillette meeting. There are exciting times for us during this next fraternal year. Come, and share them with us! Scott Wyoming State Deputy Convention On-Line Booking In a recent news release, Supreme announced Online Hotel Room and States Dinner registration for the 129 th Supreme Convention to be held in Denver, CO. The online booking web address is: The news release also states that the process is quick, easy and a secure way to make your hotel room and states dinner ticket request directly to the Supreme Secretary. So, if you plan to attend the 129 th Supreme Convention, take advantage of this online service. Only one caveat though: delegates should contact their State Deputy prior to booking. IMPORTANT REPORTS DUE Two very important reports are due and should be submitted as soon as possible. One is the Form 185 which lists all the officers elected by your council for the fraternal year 2011/2012. A second and equally important form is the Service Program Personnel Report form number 365 listed below: On July 1 st, Supreme replaces all existing officer s and program personnel s names with the information you submit on these forms. If you have not submitted these documents yet, the officers of your council as well as your program chairmen will not receive important news, information and correspondence from Supreme. Once you are registered, you will be able to access the on-line Management system. It is also very important that your State Deputy and District Deputy also receive a copy of these forms. Without them, it becomes very difficult to reach council leaders concerning state council business.

3 Cowboy Bulletin July Page 3 The grass is rarely greener We all know the old adage, the grass always seems greener on the other side of the fence. When it comes to replacing your existing Knights of Columbus life insurance with coverage offered by another company, the adage holds true. Perceptions are deceiving. A move to the other side of the fence might seem like a good one, but it can leave you with less green in your wallet in some cases, a lot less. That s why it pays to remember another old saying, Read the fine print. There are many reasons to keep your existing coverage in force. There are two major potential pitfalls of replacing coverage. Be sure that any agent trying to convince you that the grass actually is greener covers these key factors. First: The two factors that determine how much you ll need to pay for life insurance coverage are age and health. Certainly, you re older now. There s no way around that one. And you have to ask yourself, has your health changed during that time? Is your blood pressure the same? Your cholesterol? Have you gained weight? All these factors affect the amount of coverage you ll get for your premium dollar. Second, all life insurance contracts contain a contestability period, which allows the insurer to contest claims made for a period (typically two years) after the contract is issued. Chances are this is no longer an issue with your current coverage. If someone encourages you to replace or worse, drop - your existing coverage with any insurer, please ask your field agent. He ll show you how your existing coverage is working for you and why replacement is rarely in your best interest. 4 Cowboy Bulletin July Page 4 WYOMING MEMBERSHIP Here we go again! One fraternal year is over. The election or reelection of officers is over, and now it s official. Now it s time for you to don the Jewel of Office, open the briefcase, dig in the box, check the internet, and get your planning done for the next twelve months. What, you say? But summer is just starting. Well, my brother knight, if you don t get started now,,, when? Before you know it the next three months will wiz by, and then it will be October. Four months shot, and the hunting season is here already. Oops! Another two months gone! And soon it s November and them Christmas. Wow! Half the year is gone. How could that be? Well, brother Knight, I hope that s not the case with you. NOW is the time to get your officer team together and plan your programs, make your recruitment plans, and generate your council s budget for the fraternal year. It s also a good time to review those programs that worked and those that didn t work. Bare in mind that what worked last year may not work again this year. Few programs can survive more than a few years until they become stale, loosing their effectiveness. In just a few days your State Council will meet with your District Deputy, and program directors and chairmen. Make use of them in your planning. They are there to help you through the next fraternal year and beyond. I look forward to working with you at increasing our presence in this great State of Wyoming. Vivat Jesus! This change includes the new Fourth Degree Honorary distinction. With this, notification to the Supreme Council office requesting these updates is no longer needed. After the initial run, the cards will be sent to FSs/FCs weekly. THE JOBS NOT DONE, UNTIL THE PAPERWORKS DONE! That s right! You may be going out of office, but have you completed all the paperwork your council deserves and should be completed? Doesn t your council deserve the right to the Columbian Award? How about completing the SP7 form in your forms booklet or on line and receive that well earned recognition for the programs your council completed in the last year. Give your members the recognition they ve earned. Complete the paperwork!

5 Cowboy Bulletin July Page 5 WYOMING 4 TH DEGREE Here we are again at the start of a new fraternal year. Time certainly has a way of pas- has sing at an accelerated rate. The past twelve months seen some exciting changes in the Wyoming District Since September, it has been my pleasure to serve as your Wyoming District Master. During this past year we have gained 24 new Sir Knights including 21 new Sir Knights and 3 transfers. During this period we saw a few changes take place. We welcomed a new Supreme Master, increased the exemplification fee by $5.00, scheduled 4 exemplifications, held a district meeting at the state convention, clarified and increased compliance with the drill manual for our honor and color guards, provided full presence in support of the VAVS program at both V.A. hospitals in Wyoming, the institution of a new flag pin for the color guard, and continued our presence in support of our Bishop and priests of the Diocese. And time marches on On Monday, August 8 th Assembly # 1223 will sponsor a 4 th degree exemplification at the KofC Hall in Cheyenne. Is that starting the new fraternal year with a bang or what? I hope that those of you that did not make it to the 21 new Sir Knights where knighted into the 4 th degree at ceremonies held at the KofC Hall in Gillette on June 18 th. It would be a great way to recover from the Supreme Convention as well as starting off the new year by adding to our ever growing numbers of 4 th degree Sir Knights. Starting in September there will be even more changes. We will have a new Vice Supreme Master, Ken Stockwell. You will also be welcoming a new Master for the District, my replacement, who has yet to be named. It has been my great and extreme pleasure to serve you during my short but rewarding term of office.
