1 Cowboy Bulletin Wyoming Knights of Columbus I AM MY BROTHER S KEEPER Au g u s t 2 0 State Membership Plan The Wyoming State Membership Plan was recently introduced and presented by State Deputy Don Scott and Membership Director, Raoul Laganiere. Addressing the District Deputies, Directors and Chairman, Brother Scott set the tone for this year s state membership mbership plan, stating that: Membership recruitment and retention is a days a year commitment for each and every member in our state. Membership recruitment and retention should be approached with a positive (()) attitude at all levels of leadership, starting with the District Deputies, my representatives in the field! See Membership on page Dear Brother Knights, Thanks to all of you who attended the Summer Organi Organizational meeting in Gillette on the 9th and 0th of July. The meeting was well attended Don Scott and received by all. I enjoyed State Deputy getting to spend the weekend in the company of you fine gen to my home Council for gentlemen. Thanks hosting this event, and a Great Big Thank you goes out to Chef Randy Lang and his crew. They served about 0 of us one excellent meal. The Supreme Convention convenes August 2nd about the time this issue of the Cowboy Bulletin is published. The 72 jurisdictions ions will be there to conduct the business of the Order. I look forward to representing you. The convention will have an air of sadness See State Deputy Deputy, page 2 GUN-A- WEEK RAFFLE Have you purchased your ticket yet in Casper Council 997 s 2nd annual event? Weekly drawings start this September. Here s your chance to win and help the retired priests in our diocese. Get tickets and information at How To Pray "All happy families resemresem ble each other, each unun happy family is unhappy in its own way" Leo Tolstoy. Tolstoy What is true of families is also true of individuals and generations. So, So Brother Knights, how do you pray? Are you happy? I believe real prayer, contemplative prayer, can move us even beyond happiness into living joyfully, with purpur pose and meaning. If you want to dive into the background and reasons for this, I recommend the book, The Shattered Lantern, by Fr. Ronald Rolheiser. Rolhei And, prayer is the active part of all our relationships. So how you pray is only one way to express and understand life. life Knowing ourselves includes knowing more about our prayer life. In this tiny introduction, introduction I want to share my passion n for marriages and family life, life and why I am so involved with Worldwide Marriage Encounter. It includes the Divine call to all vocations, ocations, including: including priesthood, religious life, and diaconate. Spirituality is the glue that holds the Church, the Knights of Columbus, our See Prayer, Page 2

My thanks go to Don Scott and the State Council for inviting me to serve as your State Chaplain. It is a privilege to walk this spiritual journey with you. Our first meeting and Installation of Officers was a fine beginning. State Deputy (Cont from page ) as we mourn the passing of Brother Emilio B. Moure, past State Deputy of California ( ) and current Supreme Secretary. Our focus and theme this year is: I Am My Brother s Keeper. This statement is so evident in the way the Knights of Columbus volunteer and raise money for charities. The Knights of Columbus donated over $4 million dollars last year and over 70 million service hours, setting new records in 200. The Wyoming Knights of Columbus did over 0,000 hours of service and donated more than $20,000. Our 2800-plus I am eager to learn more about the State Chaplain's role at the National Convention in Denver. Sincerely in Christ, Fr. Tom Ogg Wyoming State Chaplain members can be proud of our accomplishments and service. We should be eager to invite our friends and relatives to join us in this wonderful, Catholic organization. 3 Cowboy Bulletin August Page MEMBERSHIP Continued from page State Deputy Scott went on to explain this year s state membership goal: One () member from each Council each month. This effort started at the state meeting with ONE new member from each State Officer, and District Deputy by August st. It continues with ONE new member from each State Director and Chairman by September 0 th. By October st, each Grand Knight should bring in one new member. And, for the remainder of the year, each council should bring in one new member each month. I ask that all councils, aided by their District Deputy, begin planning their membership recruitment and retention programs now, and not wait until September or October. Encourage each council and member to meet this month! said Scott. We can t wait until September or October to get started! By then we would have lost three valuable months of recruiting. During the session, State Membership Director, Raoul Laganière presented the details of the State Membership Plan to the District Deputies and those present at the meeting. A copy of the monthly membership recruitment and program ideas was given to District Deputies for distribution to each of the Councils they service. An abbreviated copy of the PowerPoint presentation, with an outline of information given during the State meeting, was ed to all District Deputies during July. Introducing the Icon or Logo, Laganière said: The remind us of the first step of our plan: membership recruitment should be uppermost in our minds, every day of the year. Laganière went on to explain, The sign reminds us to be positive and proactive in our recruitment planning and activities. The attitude and energy of the leader is usually reflected in the organization s attitude and accomplishments. The remaining part refers to our membership quota of one new member - per month - per council. Under this plan, a council and Wyoming could easily achieve their Supreme membership goals. Vivat Jesus! I would like to thank you for the support that you gave the new State Officers. It is very much appreciated. The life blood of the Order is membership. The Supreme Council s goal, for the next ten years, is two million members. If every council brought in one member per month, that goal could be recognized in one year. Our State Deputy and Membership Chairman challenged all of the State Officers, District Deputies, Directors and Chairmen to sign up one new member within the next two months. This would give us a great start towards our goal. The concept of Membership is to think of membership every day, not just when we need new members to make our council s annual membership goal. I would like for all of you to also note, that I have a new address: joewelte@centurylink.net. The old address is still effective, as it is my wife's, but please use the new one. I hope that you take the opportunity to witness the new third degree ceremony. It is very impressive. It will also make it easier for the third degree team to travel since there are fewer team members on this new team. State Per Capita and insurance bills have been mailed. Some of them may ask you to mail them to Don Scott, but please send them to me instead at: C. Joe Welte, P.O. Box 7, Lingle, Wy Please pray for the canonization of Fr McGivney C Joe Welte, State Secretary K of C Family Week August th - 4 th,20 The Family stands at the core of our Order s beliefs and ideals as a Catholic, family, fraternal service organization. We support the family in many ways. During this special week, Councils should plan family oriented activities. Here are some recommended program ideas: Sponsor a weekend family retreat. Conduct an outdoor rosary or Mass before a family picnic. Distribute Father Mc Givney prayer cards. Sponsor a family Mass with children participating as altar servers and family members as ushers and lectors. Hold a marriage vow renewal ceremony. Hold a memorial Mass for deceased members of the council family. This would be especially fitting on August 4 th, the anniversary of Fr. McGivney s death. Invite local seminarians or novices, especially those receiving support from your council to your Family Week activities. Encourage family visits to convalescent homes. Clean up litter and help your parish with outdoor maintenance. Host family sports event. Recruit new members!
