It is a silent acquiescence to Evil. The tragedy of our time is that those who still believe in honesty lack fire and conviction, while those who believe in dishonesty are full of passionate conviction." Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen Dear Brothers and Sister Columbiettes: This is my last submission of "FROM THE GRAND KNIGHT'S DESK" for my term as your Grand Knight. I've pondered the many way's of writing it. Write it in a "matter of fact style", business as usual or stay true to my character and "Try" to impart some good decent advise to the incoming slate of Officers; this is what a "GOOD" leader does. He doesn't "mud sling" or try to finish "politically correct" and of course he spares all the "up's & down's", "in & out's", "he said, you said" details of a trying term and just try's to focus on good solid "ADVISE" going forward. Of course as you suspected by now, this is the method I've decided on "stay true to my character". I'll leave "Business as usual" and bringing you up to date on all past Council activities to the newly elected Grand Knight in his 1st issue in July. In every previous edition I've included inspirational quotes that were carefully picked, each with a subliminal message. Go back and review them, especially the one above, they just may give you some insight into why some of the decisions I've made and some of the positions I've taken were necessary. I've had the honor and the privilege, as a young altar boy to serve Mass many times in St. Patrick s Cathedral for Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen. As you can see from my quotes he is my "most quoted" (4 out of 12). His book from 1951 entitled " Peace of Soul" can and will inspire you, get it and study it you can refer to it for the rest of your life. In this final memo I've included a second inspirational quote which actually in many way's sums up who I am. You've all heard me say, at one time or another, "I am used to being the 800 lb. gorilla in the room", well this my final quote from Archbishop Sheen say's it all... "By consenting to every common impulse and the pleasure of every sense, one becomes a " YES MAN" to the voice of self-destruction, Our character is made by our choices". In other words, try not to become "YES MEN". Stand up for what is right for you and our Council even if your actions and decisions are not popular. Finally, on my business cards for just about half-a-century appears the following..."know THE TRUTH AND THE TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE"... 8 JOHN Although the road getting through this year was a little "rocky", to say the least, the commitment we all made to CHARITY, UNITY, FRATERNATY and PATRIOTISM motivates me to carry on. Let us always remember "FAMILY FIRST" and also our founder Fr. Michael J. McGivney, apostle to the young, protector of Christian Life, Pray for us. PEACE BE WITH YOU ALL. VIVAT JESUS! JOHN All material in this document was approved by GK John A. Praino for publication. Council 1 st Degree June Anniversaries (Years): Andrew Alvino (22), Frank Bernacki (38), Ed Berwick (11), Joseph Canale (46), Robert Coletto (35), Scott D Angelo (9), William Dockerty (3), Edward Frabizio (35), Bill Gonzalez (24), Anthony Granato (36), Deacon Anthony Graviano (37), Josh Leidig (11),William Mackenzie (14), Keith Mandart (35), Jeremiah McGiff (14), Serafino Mindardi (11), Daniel Molloy (36), Bill Mones (11), Joseph Monteith (40), Deacon Joseph Mystkowski (29), Alexander Patterson (36), Edward Quinn (34), Ronald Redmond (58), David Romeo (11), Stanley Savicki (38), Phil Sgro (17), Dennis Smith (9), Salvatore Torre (11), John Wisniewski (9). Happy Birthday to All Members in the Month of June. It is hard to believe that we are coming to the close of yet another Columbian Year. It is even harder still for me to believe that this will be my final District Deputy Message. I have served the Third New York District for the last Four Years, and have been very proud to do so. In those four years I have had 16 different Grand Knights come and go in the District. It truly was my Honor, and I hope that, in some small way, I was able to be of assistance in helping and guiding them in serving their Council. I always did my best to make myself available to all the members of the Third District, and to provide them with the answers to whatever questions that they had, or to help steer them in the right direction when they had a difficult decision to make. It wasn t easy, and it took a lot of time and effort. But I did it for one reason. I love and believe in this Order and the work we do. And I love my Council. In all that time I never stopped promoting and putting Patchogue Council first, and I never stopped telling anyone who would listen from all over the State how Patchogue 725 was the best Council in the New York, if not in the Order. Whenever I could promote one of my Council Brothers, I did it. Whenever I could offer our Council, as a way to showcase it, I did it. Because I knew that they wouldn t let me down. And I will continue to do so, and I will continue to serve this Council as long as I am a member of 725. I want to thank you all for the help that you have all shown me over these years as well. Anytime I asked for something, you came through. I also want to thank my wife Jessica as well. Her patience, her understanding and her support these last four years has been astounding. Without her help, there s no way that I would have been able to do it. If Peter was Jesus Rock, Jessica was my pebble? Anyway, she s the best and I love her with all my heart. Make room on the couch babe, and get ready to give up the remote. I look forward to seeing you all at the next meeting, and I look forward to being able to be more involved down at the Council, to be able to get my boots on the ground and my hands dirty. And I particularly look forward to being able to sit on the sidelines with all of the other PGK s and point out all of the things that the current Officers are doing wrong, and to talk about how when we were Grand Knight, things were different, and how we did things the right way. Vivat Jesus and God Bless Michael Boehm PGK, FDD Page 2

5 The Christian Man and the Love of the Father: A Fathers Day Message Every man even those who don t have children of their own is called to fatherhood. His fatherhood consists of nurturing the vocations of those for whom the Lord has given him care and responsibility. In his recent apostolic exhortation on the call to holiness in today s world, Gaudete et Exsultate, Pope Francis highlights the central importance of the grace of discernment which seeks a glimpse of that unique and mysterious plan that God has for each of us. Father Jonathan D. Kalisch, O.P. Director of Chaplains and Spiritual Development A father plays a key role in showing his children the love of God the Father, through which they experience, on a supernatural level, the knowledge of the unrepeatability of their own unique lives. Before a man is ever a spouse or a father, he himself is first a beloved son of God the Father. This is the mystery of discipleship our Lord Jesus Christ, especially in the Gospel of John, reveals over and over again. Knowing that he is a beloved son of the Eternal Father gives a man ordered priority to his life and relationships: first God, then his spouse and, finally, his children. Pope Francis reminds us that God s unique plan for each of us involves more than my temporal well-being, my satisfaction at having accomplished something useful, or even my desire for peace of mind. It has to do with the meaning of my life before the Father who knows and loves me, with the real purpose of my life, which nobody knows better than he (. Reading these words, we cannot help but think of the ways in which our paternal and spiritual fathers assist us on the path of encounter with God the Father. Let us remind our brother Knights of their unparalleled role in revealing to their sons and daughters the treasure of the meaning of their lives in light of the love of God the Father. Happy Fathers Day!! Vivat Jesus! On Sunday May 19th, Members of our Council gathered at Fr. Tortora Park for the re-dedication and re-opening of the newly renovated Park. Fr. Tortora was a Priest at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel from , and was a Member of Council 725. The Park was originally dedicated in We were very happy to have the current Pastor of Mt. Carmel, Fr. Henry Reid, and our own Council Chaplin Fr. Bill Winters on hand for the Dedication. Fr. Henry closed the festivities by giving the Park a Blessing. Pictured with Fr. Bill and Fr. Henry is Council 725 Member Dennis Smith from the B.I.D. and Marie Hilton, Mayor Pontieri (L) and Deputy Mayor Jack A. Krieger(R). The Park, and this beautiful plaque, is located at Central Ave. and E. 3rd Street behind the Police Dept. Thanks to all the Brothers who came down for the ceremony, and special thanks to Phil Graniello and Joe Brandi for setting it up and cooking the burgers and hot dogs. On Monday May 28th Officers and Members of the Our Council gathered to March in the Annual Patchogue Memorial Day Parade. Among some of the Officers were DGK John Terlecki, Bob Elliott PGK, FDD and Council FS, Denis Boyce Council Treasurer and our Chaplin Fr. Bill Winters. Also present was our District Deputy Mike Boehm PGK and Bill Fontaine PGK. Special thanks to Frank Bosco and all of the Brothers who helped out at the 50/50 Dinner that was held on Friday, May 25th.
