1 OTEY NOTES Summer Sundays at Otey are Delicious! From Our Rector...! The late George Connor was a friend of mine. George was the longtime head of the English Department at UT Chattanooga, as well as a great Episcopal churchman and leader.! He compiled and edited a book some of you know, Listening to Your Life: Daily Meditations with Frederick Buechner. On a beautiful summer day last week, I was reminded of a Church School class he taught one Sunday that I was lucky enough to attend.! On June 19, Joan Hurst and her team prepared a delicious meal that was enjoyed by dozens of parishioners.! Looking around the Parish Hall that morning, the vision of what the brunches could accomplish was fulfilled: a real church family, sitting around getting to know each other, loving each other, lifting up each other, sharing one another's burdens.! Joan s food, prepared with thought, care, and love made all the difference. We d love to have you join us any or every Sunday until mid- August from a.m. in the Parish Hall. May every week bring our church family closer together. (More pictures on Page 7) The class dealt with the beauty and the glory of God which we discern in literature, music, painting, and (importantly) in the sights and sounds and feelings we encounter everyday of our lives.! Quoting Mr. Buechner, George reminded us to "...stop, look and listen to life on this planet, including our own lives, as a vastly richer, deeper, more mysterious business than most of the time it ever occurs to us to suspect as we bumble along from day to day on automatic pilot."! He referenced a poem by Gerard Manley Hopkins: (continued on next page)! PAGE 1
2 From Our Rector... (continued $om previous page) Glory be to God for dappled things--- For skies of couple-colour as a brinded cow; For rose moles all in stipple upon trout that swim; Fresh chestnut-falls; finches wings; Landscape plotted and pierced--- fold, fallow, and plough; And all trades, their gear and tackle and trim. All things counter, original, spare, strange;... Praise Him.! Pay attention, we're reminded, don't fail to see God's glory, God's ingenuity, God's divinity in every day. And you know, sometimes we want to, and try to, but we are simply incapable of doing so! Life is hectic (VERY hectic around Otey this summer). We are, after all, only human.! But we can try. We can make some time, however brief. For it is important not only to our spiritual health, but our physical and mental health as well. Take some time, MAKE some time, during these summer months to stop, look, and listen for God. Remember, Scripture tells us that Jesus often took time to be alone and pray and consider his relationship with his Heavenly Father. Do the same. Take in the beauty. Experience it completely. Soak up and savor every iota of God's love. Feel God's presence in your life.! God s peace,!! Joe Morning and Evening Prayer Ministers Needed If you re looking for another way to increase your ministry opportunities, this may be for you. There are two openings for readers of Morning and Evening Prayer. 3 Fire On The Mountain News and Notes Mission Accomplished!! We're back from a great trip to Alabama, and our youth did an awesome job working with Church of the Advent in Lillian and at a camp in the Pensacola area for at risk kids called Camp Happy Sands. Painting, cleaning, sorting, power-washing, hanging signs were all done with a willing attitude which is hard to do when the temperature is pushing 100 degrees. Our youth were gracious, kind to one another and helped make Mission Outreach 2011 one of the best. It was obvious to all the difference they made. A big thank you to Mickey and Rachel Suarez for their hospitality and for adding the fun factor to our outreach. (More pictures on Page 6) Closer To Home...! During the week of June 20 we reached out to meet needs on the mountain, and also down in Sherwood. We hosted Vacation Bible School for special needs adults in the mornings and worked on home repairs in the afternoons. On Wednesday of that week we partnered with our friends at the Islamic Center to volunteer at Second Harvest Food Bank. We wrapped up the week with a great hike to Stone Door. Let s Celebrate!! July 4 is our annual fund-raiser. We'll be selling jambalaya on the lawn of Brooks Hall and rumor has it that a famous local band will provide background music. Support our youth! In Christ, Betty Carpenter! PAGE 3
