1 Guyton Christian Church April 2017 Newsletter Web: Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the town of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael and told him, We have found the one about whom Moses wrote in the law, and also the prophets, Jesus, son of Joseph, from Nazareth. But Nathanael said to him, Can anything good come from Nazareth? Philip said to him, Come and see. What s going on in the church life? As newly elected Board Chair, I can tell you -- a lot is going on! I ve learned in my short stint that it takes much effort to keep the church operating. Beyond the activities that we all know about, including worship, Bible studies & Wednesday night youth, we have multiple committees that meet regularly. These committees include Worship, Personnel, Property, Education, Outreach, Evangelism & Membership, Social, Long-Range Planning & Pastoral Search. While there is some overlap, many of these committees have members who have volunteered to serve on a particular committee to keep the church operating normally. It is how our church is run -- we have a Church Board with officers that meet on alternating months and a church cabinet made up of committee chairs that meets during months that the General Board does not meet. There are seven functional committees and a few ad hoc committees that meet intermittently. There s definitely a lot going on! But, are we missing the point? Is church about all these committees and meetings? Why do we feel the need to involve so many people to conduct the business of church? Would Jesus have approved? I believe so. When Jesus was starting his ministry, he started by calling his Disciples one at a time. First Andrew, who then recruited his brother Simon. Then, Jesus recruited Phillip, who then said to Nathanael Come and see. We could say the same thing about our church activities -- Come and see! Come and see what is being talked about in our committees. Come and see how we begin each meeting with prayer. Come and see how the decisions that are being made are meant to honor God and his church. Come and see the camaraderie that is built by just meeting together - even if the subject is not specifically about the act of worship. We at Guyton Christian Church are active. We are working together to share the power of the Spirit and the HOPE that Christ created by his sacrifice to save us from our sins. Yes -- things are happening -- if you don't believe it, then Come and see! The Disciples are still active! Yours truly, T. Marshall Reiser, Board Chairman Guyton Christian Church (DOC), April 2017, Page 1

Mark your calendars, men! April 30 is the 5th Sunday Men s Breakfast hosted by Guyton United Methodist Church. Come out and enjoy a wonderful breakfast and fellowship with our neighbors! Dear friends at Guyton Christian Church, Thank you so much for the farewell gifts and well wishes from the congregation and many individuals. The financial gifts were very helpful in our move to Little Rock. We will also treasure the visits, cards, covered-dish lunch, and public reception that were a part of being released into retirement from a ministry together at Guyton Christian Church. We are showing to family and new friends the book of pictures and memories you gave us. It is a snapshot of ten years that will last forever. We are settling into the house we are leasing, Jamestown Drive, Little Rock, AR It is near my mother and not far from my sister. Come and see! We are participating with my mother s church, First Christian of Little Rock. It is an old congregation whose buildings and property have outgrown them. They have sold that complex and will be moving and building a new church in a newer part of the city. It is like a new church start which beings additional excitement to worshipping with followers of Jesus. As we adjust to the new, we value the old friendships, challenges, and joys of ministry with Guyton Christian Church, We are confident of continuing ministers here and there led, as always, by the Spirit of the Living God. Grace and Peace (Love too), David & Kay Guyton Christian Church (DOC), April 2017, Page 7
8 Spring Work Days Planned for April 7th-8th. The 7th is on-your-own work time come when you can. Work on a particular task you feel led to tackle. Not sure what needs to be done? Pick a flower bed, pull weeds and plant flowers; open a closet door and organize the contents; clean & polish pews in the sanctuary. There are numerous tasks to be done! On Saturday, April 8th, meet at 8am. Team up with a crew to work with your gifts! Crew Leaders: Bill Exley, Landscaping/Grounds Ron Clary & Woody MacKay, Carpentry & General Repair Jack Malcom, Electrical/Lighting issues Michael Moore, Painting & Depot clean-out VBS Work Days Maker Fun Factory! April 2, Sunday at 3pm April 29, Saturday 10ish 1pm May 13, Saturday, 10ish-1pm May 27, Saturday, Set up day, 2p-5p Help us prepare for vacation Bible school! Various widgets and gadgets to cut out, paint and assemble! Lend your talents! Save cardboard pizza rounds, heavy-duty plastic wrap/aluminum foil cardboard tubes, wire reels, giant water-cooler water bottles, 5-gallon buckets! Donation box in The Gallery! Input, Please! Long Range Planning is looking for your input! With the renovations to the old post office completed, we realize the need for a handicapped accessible restroom near the sanctuary. We are looking for options on how to make that possible. A possibility may include incorporating the two existing restrooms into a Uni-sex restroom, using space as needed from the previous Heritage Room. Another project involves storage in the Christian Center. Do we add additional space, or remodel/re-purpose areas already in existence? Again, an idea is to make a nonloadbearing wall, on both sides approximately where the stage opening begins, and each with an access door. Signs. We are also investigating signs for our various locations. What do YOU want them to look like? Make us a sketch for consideration! Give us your ideas and feedback on the possibilities for these upcoming projects. Put suggestions in the Suggestion Box in The Gallery! Thank you! Deadline for input is May 21 Guyton Christian Church (DOC), April 2017, Page 8
