1 The Weekly Visitor P A C I F I C H I L L S L U T H E R A N C H U R C H 1110 South 90 th Street, Omaha, Nebraska April 27, 2014 Our student leaders have made a commitment to serve our neighbors in north Omaha (and the North Circuit), through building relationships and establishing on-going opportunities for partnerships. They are meeting with Ron Dotzler, CEO of the Abide Network, next Wednesday, April 30, at 8pm at The Gathering Place. Hopefully, these conversations and potential partnership will bring about an extended opportunity to serve. Many of our student leaders will be around all summer, and campus ministry will be business as usual. We look forward to these opportunities to serve and grow in the work that the Lord has given us. Please keep our efforts and our ministry in your prayers. Blessings, Don L. Bader, Coordinator Living H 2 O Lutheran Campus Ministry Save the Dates: (Retirement Celebrations) May 16, 6pm to 9pm - Cook out at church. Meat, drinks, plates and utensils will be furnished. I want to thank everyone for all the help with the Easter Breakfast. It didn t go unnoticed and was greatly appreciated. Whether you helped in the kitchen, brought food, helped set-up or clean-up it was all appreciated. Thank you to Robin Schneider for coordinating the Easter egg hunt. A special thanks to Mike Horton for doing the cooking. Thank you to everyone who came and enjoyed the meal. Susan Chavez, CYF Board We are in immediate need of communion stewards, both to set-up and clean-up. Please look at the signup sheet on the kiosk in the narthex. If you are interested, but just need a little training to spur you on, please contact Carla Horton. Thank you in advance for all assistance. The National Day of Prayer is quickly approaching, and once again Pacific Hills Lutheran Church will host an all-day prayer vigil. Come take the opportunity to join with your fellow Christians in prayer for one another, for our nation, and maybe even for Berkshire Hathaway! Bring someone along and share with them how important prayer is in your life. WHEN: Saturday, May 3, 7am to 7:30pm. WHAT: The PHLC sanctuary will be open throughout the day for prayer and meditation, and we will hold brief devotions based on the petitions of the Lord's Prayer every hour on the hour. In addition, we will observe the historic prayer offices (i.e., prayer services) of Matins at 8am, Vespers at 4pm, and Compline at 7pm. WHO: All are invited to drop in at any time during the day, but we need volunteers to help as greeters and devotion leaders throughout the day. Greeters will serve in one-hour increments, introducing any guests to PHLC and directing people to provided materials. Devotion leaders will read a brief devotion (think Portals of Prayer) with those gathered. The devotion may be prepared either by the devotion leader or by Pastor Schneider. If you have any questions or would like to help out, please contact Pastor Schneider. Again, this year we will host Courtyard Jazz concerts - Sundays, June 15, July 20 and August 17. These are held in the evening from 7pm to 8pm in the courtyard. We are looking for funding for two of the events. The cost is $800. Please turn in any donations to the church office. Pastor and Martha are graciously hosting our Sunday, August 17, cook-out and Big Band jazz concert at 5pm. We thank them. For any mother who wants to feed her infant, there is a rocking chair and screen for you to use in the library. The Catechism Corner Confession: How Christians should be taught to confess What do you believe according to [John 20:22-23]? I believe that when the called ministers of Christ deal with us by His divine command, in particular when they exclude openly unrepentant sinners from the Christian congregation and absolve those who repent of their sins and want to do better, this is just as valid and certain, even in heaven, as if Christ our dear Lord dealt with us Himself. Readings for Sunday, May 4: Acts 2:14a, 36-41; Psalm 116; 1 Peter 1:17-25; Luke 24:13-35 Events of Other Congregations and Agencies Retirement Celebration and Open House on Sunday, April 27, 2pm - 4pm at Concordia Academy (1821 N. 90th) to honor and celebrate the retirements of Liz Slothower (2nd grade teacher) and Gladys Boeckner (librarian). Concordia students and families have been so blessed by the service of these two women. The former Peace Lutheran Church at 44 th & Grover is soon to be the Peace Center for International Ministry as Mt. Calvary partners with the Nebraska District in outreach to refugees and immigrants in Omaha. I m excited about the possibility that the Peace Center will be a place where we can work together with our LCMS churches through Omaha and beyond in order to serve the needs of the international people in our midst. Our goal is that the Peace Center will be a resource for all of our Tri-Circuit churches as we seek to serve our newest neighbors who are coming to Omaha from all over the world. The work officially begins May 1 st as Rev. Eddie Mekasha joins the staff of Mt. Calvary as our assistant pastor with a special focus for outreach to refugees and immigrants. His installation date will be announced very soon. Our inaugural activity will take place on May 3 rd as we call together immigrants and Anglos to work together to get the Peace site ready for ministry. There s a lot of outside yard work and inside cleaning that needs to be done. But most importantly, this will be a chance to meet together, talk and work together, and hopefully build some new friendships. If you want to suggest anyone to be a team leader for some of the clean-up work, that would be great! Details are on the attached bulletin insert. If you or a group from your church can come and be a part of this, you are most welcome! Also, we are still gathering names of people who would be willing to serve on the Collaboration Team for this new ministry, so please share any names you might want to suggest. I know that all of your churches are very involved in many types of ministry, and we don t want to take away from any of that. But if this is something that some of your members would like to do, they are surely invited! Call ( ) for more information. Blessings, Pastor Claude Houge Workshop on "Answers on Aging: Resources for Seniors and Their Families". Countryside Community Church, 8787 Pacific, will be hosting a workshop on Saturday, May 3, 9am to 11:30am addressing many of the issues faced by seniors and those who care for them. Whether you or someone you love and care for is facing life changes, plan to attend this informative presentation by speakers from Partnerships in Aging and Care Consultants for the Aging. Contact

The coalition began construction of a new house at 2451 S. 17th Street on April 11, By the end of July the house needs to be done! That means a lot of help is needed! The house is for a mom and her children. Coalition member reps met Martha Lopez and her family at a pre-build dinner a few weeks ago. They are a very pleasant and appreciative family! You can help this effort in one or more ways: 1. Pray for our Lord s blessings and guidance in this effort to help our neighbor. 2. Work on the house - You can volunteer for as much or as little as you like. Most of the work by volunteers is done on Fridays and Saturdays. Each of the work days has a morning session and an afternoon session. 3. Help with preparing/serving food to the volunteers. PHLC has committed to provide the food for the volunteers working on June 13th & 14th. 4. Contribute Money If you wish to help build the house, Habitat has an online procedure for sign up this year. Here is the site address: This link lists the days of work planned and a general idea of the type of work planned for that day. All of the volunteer work days are Fridays and Saturdays. You can sign up for a half day or a full day. The last column on the right shows the status of how many worker slots are available for each specific date. Pick the date or dates you are interested in and check the box or boxes. Go to the next screen. There you will be asked to enter your address and password the first time you sign up. The next step asks for an address and phone and an emergency contact. You will also be asked to sign a waiver form online. (Waiver forms are also available at the work site). One of the last sign up steps asks if you are a member of an affiliated organization. The 2nd category which is: Are you affiliated with one of the following religious congregations? shows Neighbors South as an option. Choose that option. If you have questions, give me a call or send me an . Lynn Wegehaupt (402) (cell)

5 Another good contact for questions is our coalition's volunteer leader: Fred Beschorner (402) Thanks for your help, Lynn Wegehaupt, PHLC Coalition Representative
