1 President The Heritage Heartbeat Painting News for Members of Palomar Heritage Painters Vol 35, Issue 12 December 2018 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Tis the Season December 1, 2018 Holiday Party Once again, I m so proud of our chapter for how much they step up and give. The board designated this fall as the season of giving focusing on giving to the San Marcos Mobile Home Park, and again we collected much needed supplies for those residents who are coach bound. Thank you so much! Our Christmas party will also be giving to the park with help from raffles and silent auctions. This party has been carefully planned to have a great time. I hope all can come and enjoy the day. Years ago, when Jack Ragland first started teaching with his free-spirited nature, I wasn t sure how that would go over in our decorative art community. Well now years later Jack s class is one of the most attended we have every year. I feel as painters we secretly want to be looser in our painting techniques and Jack pushes us to do just that. With Jack working the room giving individual instruction and positive comments, he managed to captivate his audience. A big thanks to Jack and our Program s girls for getting patterns and instructions with time to prepare. Thank you, carol and Debi. Last month, we held our Annual Project Vote for Paint-in pieces to be taught from April 2019 February Many of you came to see the pieces displayed at the November class and many others visited the Voting Pages on our website. Thank you for your participation. The voting results will be presented to the Board at our Budget meeting in early January and announced by blast right after that. Everyone needs to renew their PHP and SDP membership for Please read the Membership Update on page 9 for details. Only members who have paid their SDP National Dues by December 31 will receive a membership card with the Spring 2019 issue of The Decorative Painter. As always, we need volunteers committees next year. If you are interested in Ways and Means for 2019, let me know. We also need an MPI chairperson for Looking ahead, as of now, the entire board will need replacing in 2020, so search your heart and consider volunteering for either a board position or committee. I wish you the happiest of holidays and a safe new year. 8 Sunshine The final month of the year is December, as well as the last days of the fall season. December 21st marks the beginning of winter with the Winter Solstice, which translates into colder weather and earlier nights. With the closing of the year, December holds many of the world's most-loved traditions, including Christmas, Hanukkah and New Year's Eve. Additionally, for those who are amongst our world greatest thinkers and doers, December also marks the time when Nobel Prize winners are awarded. Few months present as many multicultural celebrations as December. From Christmas to Omisoka, the last month of the year is a world of holidays. Christmas is celebrated around the world. Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights, is an eight day celebration. Hanukkah 2018 will begin in the evening of Sunday, December 2 and ends in the evening of Monday, December 10. Kwanzaa is a week-long celebration that is celebrated in the United States, as well as other countries with populations of African descendants. It is a holiday which celebrates and honors African culture in not only the African-American community but also in the World African community. This holiday is celebrated from December 26th through January 1st. Kwanzaa was created by Dr. Maulana Karenga in 1966 after the Watts riots in Los Angeles. He founded US, a cultural organization, and started to research African first fruit (harvest) celebrations. From there, he combined aspects of several different harvest celebrations to form the basis of Kwanzaa. Boxing Day takes place on December 26. Only celebrated in a few countries, the holiday originated in the United Kingdom during the Middle Ages. It was the day when the alms box, collection boxes for the poor often kept in churches, were opened and their content distributed, a tradition that still happens in some areas. Boxing Day has now become a public holiday in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, among other countries. Ōmisoka, New Year s Eve, is considered the second-most important day in Japanese tradition as it is the final day of the old year and the eve of New Year s Day, the most important day of the year. Families gather on Ōmisoka for one last time in the old year to have a bowl of toshikoshi-soba or toshikoshi-udon, a tradition based on eating the long noodles to cross over from one year to the next. The two astrological signs associated with the month of November are Sagittarius and Capricorn. For those born from December 1st to December 21st, they are members of the Sagittarius sign. The Sagittarius can be sure to have a desire to put their imprint in the world, which is paired nicely with their appreciation of life's finer things. People born from December 22nd to December 31st are members of the Capricorn zodiac sign. Those born in the month of December who are under the influence of Sagittarius- Capricorn cusp are rational and highly optimistic individuals. Known for their outgoing and generous nature, these individuals are extremely loyal and trustworthy and are blessed with a charming personality. Some famous people born in December are Woody Allen, Julianne Moore, Jeff Bridges, Little Richard, Bette Midler, Jeff Bridges, Ellen Burstyn, Kirk Douglas, Judy Dench, Bobby Flay, Rita Moreno, Bill Nighy, Dick Van Dyke, Taylor Swift, Tim Conway, Brad Pitt, Samuel L. Jackson, Kiefer Sutherland, Jane Fonda, Ray Romano, Dianne Sawyer, Ricky Martin, Sissy Spacek, Jimmy Buffett, Denzel Washington, Maggie Smith, Mary Tyler Moore, Ted Danson, LeBron James, Anthony Hopkins and last, but not least, Ben Kingsley. Oh, and, our own Onya Tolmasoff. December Birthdays Onya Tolmasoff Jeanne Robert The Heritage Heartbeat December 2018 Page 8
