6 Fulgham-Fulghum Family Facs, Nojg M i F r o m Lincolnshire o America by Gran Fulgham (Coninued from Issue # 22) g?! he Derbyshire I Foyambesesablished ' in Lincolnshire as early as 1387AD wih he marriage of Thomas Foljambe (son of Sir Godfrey Foljambe who was he solicior o John of Gaun, Duke of Lancaser) o Margare de Loudham. Through ha marriage, Thomas gained he manors of Riby, Wineron and Marin and ineress in Aylesby, Sallingborough, and Walham. The family appears o have kep hese holdings unil hey were sold by Sir Francis Foljambe, Barone in Oher Lincolnshire manors in which he Fojambes acquired aconnecion in he 16 h and 17 cenuries included Walesly (purchasedby Sir James Foljambe ca 1521), Rigsby (marriage of Thomas Nevile and Caherine Foljambe in 1536), Keleby (marriage of Godfrey Foljambe o Troh Tyrwhi in 1556, Scampon (marriage of Isabel Wray and Godfiey Foljambein 1582), Ormsby (marriage of Gerrude Skipwih and George F onambe in 1596), Saleby (marriage of Anne Harringon and Thomas Foljambe in 1603), Sudbrook (acquired by Sir Thomas Foljambe in 1611), and Barlings (marriage of Chrisopher Wray and Frances Foljambe in 1646). Alhough hese lisings are edious, i is helpfiil o know he family affiniies ha he Foljambes held in Lincolnshire. Affiniies wih such families as he de Loudhams and Tyrwhis go back o he ime of John of Gaun, Duke of Lancaser and clearly idenified he Foljambes aspar of he Lancasriari power base.. Their idenificaion wih he House of Lancaser coninued hrough he reigns of Henry I V, V, and VI and laer, he quasi-lancasrian dynasy of he Tudors, hrough The Lancasrain affiniy is of major ineres o he Foljambe hisorian and will be discussed in par of his series. he Pilgrim Fahers Trail (Family Facs issue # 21, 2/97) discussed he emigraion of English Eas Midland purian divines and heir followers, firs o Holland in 1608 and, laer in abou 1620, o I American planaions in Plymouh, Massachuses and Isle of Wigh Couny, Virginia. Tha would have been he firs wave of emigraion caused, in par, by he religious inolerance which coninued unabaed during James I s reign. A second wave of emigraion of purian divines and heir followers began in he mid 1630's in reacion o he increase in religious inolerance during Charles] sreign. This second wave resuled in he selemen of such new world owns as Boson and Hingham, Massachuses and Exeer, New Hampshire and a coninuing influx of coloniss o Virginia, where owns were no he acceped paern of selemen. The Foljambe-Wray family affiniy which was so insrumenal in he suppor of purian divines during he firs wave, coninued ino he second wave. Alhough he Wray sisers, Lady Isabel (Foljambe) and Lady Frances, had died by he second Wave, he work ha hey had begun was coninued by heir nieces, nephews, and in laws. (Figure & 17" Cenury Foljambe-Wray Family Connecions provides a deailed view of he Foljambe-Wray familial relaionships ha exised before, during and afier Isabel and Frances lifeimes.) onna and I made our cener of operaion his phase of our rip a Rookery Farm, Casle Carlon, he lovely B&B belonging o M r. & Mrs. Peer Gosse. One of he locaions of paricular ineres for our research was Belleau Manor and Rookery Farm is very near here. We are no cerain if any meaphysics was involved in our choice of Rookery Farm as our cener of operaions, bu i urned ou ha Peer Gosse had salvaged he sundial from Belleau Manor many years ago when he old srucure was razed and had morared and bricked he sundial ino he side of he B&B. Peer accompanied Donna and I on a our of Belleau and proved o be he source of many ineresing facs abou is hisory. I will reurn o Belleau laer. uring Charles [ 5 reign, Archbishop of DCanerbury Laud began o urn he screws on nonconformis purian minisers who failed o conform wih Anglican forms of worship. One such miniser was John Coon of Boson, Lincolnshire, a ciy which was laer o become he siser ciy of Boson, Massachuses. John Coon spreachingwas so moivaing ha people were flocking o his church from all over Souh Lincolonshire, including from asfar away asalford which was 25 miles from Boson. Among he Alford devoees of Coon was he family of William Huchinson, whose wife, Anne Huchinson, would laer become famous for her par in he Aninonian Conroversy in Boson, Massachuses. By 1633, he pressure on Coon had become unbearable and he decided o emigrae o Boson, Massachuses. In 1634, he Huchinson family emigraed and, hrough Dfor heir exensive family afiiniies, such families as Marbury, Sorre, Wheelwrigh, Savage, Sanford, Collins, Wenworh, Lawson, and Sco also emigraed. In a 1637 census of heads of households in Boson, Massachuses, ou of 120 whose place oi origin was idenified, 40 were from Souh Lincolnshire and, of ha group, 18were from Alford and viciniy. onna and my ineres in Belleau cenered around he Anhony Fulgham family (spelled Fulliam' and "Folgeam" in he records) of Belleau. The parish regisers recorded he following DManor birhs: Fulliam, Nahanuel, of Anhony Fulliam & Sarah, 24 Feb 1661, Aby/Greenfield; FuIliam, Danuel(Twin),of AnhonyFuIIiam & Sarah, 24 Feb 1661, Aby/Greenfield; Folgeam, Aaron, of Anhonie Folgeam & Elizabeh, 10 March 1661, Belleau/Aby; Folgeam, Elizabeh, of Anhonie Folgeam & Sarah, 7 June 1663, Belleau/Aby; Folgeam, Anhonie, of Auhonie Folgeam & Sarah, 24 Oc. 1664, Belleau/Aby. B elleau is abou 2 miles from Alford and Belleau children would use he Alford Grammar School. In 1650, Sir Henry Vane he younger, a man of imporance in Massachuses hisory and English hisory, purchased Belleau Manor fi'om Rober Berie (Lord of Willoughby D Eresby). Vane used Belleau as his residence from 1652 unil his execuion in The reader will noe frorr figure 1, ha Vane married Frances Wray ir 1640 making him, for a brief period, Si FrancisFoljambe snephew (by marriage) and firs cousin o Frances Foljambe. Vane had always held Aninonian religious views a odds wih he Anglican church. Because of his frusraion wih he esablished church, hehac' been among he second wave of emigrans o he colonies in he 1630's. Recognizing Vane 's geneel background, he Massachuses Bay Colony elecorae quickly eleced Vane Governor of Massachuses i Unforunaely, Vane ssuppor foranne Huchinson s Aninonianism did no si wel wih he orhodox purian church fahers anc Vane was relieved of his office he following year. The Huchinsons may have old Vane 01 he beauy of Belleau, which means, lierally beauifiil waer while he was i Massachuses and hemay have waied for a

7 opporuniy o purchase he manor. Vane was Knighedin 1640 and was acive in every Parliamen unil he Resoraion. Afier purchasing Belleau in 1650, Vane spen all of his ime here when he wasn bound by Parliamenary duies. Belleau, did in fac, became a magne for like minded non conformiss, paricularly from he colonies. Such hisorical figures as Roger Williams (The Faher of Rhode Island) and John Wheelwrigh (The founder of Exeer, New Hampshire) were guess here, someimes for exended periods. Belleau, hen is a very imporan sie o visi for he F ulgham family hisorian since i places af ulgham (Fulliam, Folgeam) family nex o an influenial family acive in American Colonizaion and which had a close kinship wih he Foljambe family. he approach o Belleau from Casle very fla and was once par of he Lincolnshire fens sysem. Over he cenuries, he fens were reclaimed and mos are now under culivaion. As you near Belleau, you will encouner a wooded area and a he op of agenle knoll, nesed in he woods, is he Belleau parish church. The church is of ypical consrucion and size compared o he oher village churches. Jus inside he enrance on your lef is a recumben saue of a 12 cenury knigh, said o be Ralphe de Aby, who founded Greenfield Priory in 1153AD. A he aler, one sees he bapismal fon where he Fulliam wins, Nahanuel and Danuel were chrisened in 1661, and where he Folgeam children, Aaron, Elizabeh and Auhonie, were chrisened in On he wall above, a Massachuses Hisorical Sociey has dedicaed a plaque o Sir Henry Vane. Weoured he church gravede bu found no headsones marking Fulgham graves. bou 100 yards downhill from he one eners he area ha during Vane s era, was he manor house and grounds. Alhough he area is privaely owned and is no open o he public, Peer Gosse obained permission from he owner for Donna and I o our he area. We knew ha he manor house had been pulled down over a decade ago, bu we waned o see if he foundaions or oher relics remained. As one approaches he manor sie, he firs srucure you see is an ocagonal brick dovecoa near he enrance. This srucure was par of he Norh Gaehouse when he sie was in full use as he grea home of he Lords Willoughby de Eresby. Alhough he remainder of he buildings a he sie are now farm buildings, asone inspecs hese buildings closely one obains a bizarre feeling of surrealism...because buil ino he sone and brick walls of hese rusic buildings are finely carved, ornae sone arches, fiiezes, and TCarlon is Achurch a cornices salvaged from he old buildings! Over he enrance o one of he oubuildings is he finely carved sone image of a groesque hairy man reminiscen of one of William Blake 's images. The caricaure is known locally as he "wildman of he Willoughbys, probably daing from he period of he Lords Willoughby de Eresby. Our our of Belleau Manor was mos eneraining and Peer Grosse obained a phoograph of he old manor house for us daing from abou bou five miles Souhwes of Belleau is village of Willoughby. Quoing he publicaion Alford and America, on Saurday, 9'h January 1580, George and Alice Smih enered Willoughby Church carrying heir firs born son for bapism. George Smih, a shy and reiring man, had acquired a small farm a Casle Carlon and leased land from Lord Willoughby de Eresby, Lord of he Manor of Willoughby. George andalice chrisened heir child John. Young John Smih, who would laer be famous as Capain John Smih of Virginia, wen o grammar school under he Schoolmaser Reverend Francis Marbury. Marbwy would become he faher, in 1591, of a daugher, Anne, who laer would marry William Huchinson and asanne Huchinson emigrae o Massachuses in Alhough here do no appear o be any Fulgham parish records from Willoughby, i is of hisorical ineres o our family for several reasons relaed o John Smih. We know ha Capain Moone" of he ship Swallow in he hird supply in 1609 would have had direc conac wih John Smih before he depared Virginia. Our Capain John Moone, Anhony Fulgham s neighbor on he Pagan River, asan Ancien Planer is probably he Capain Moone of he Swallow. Alhough we have no Belleau parish records prior o 1650, IF Fulgham children lived here during Smih s childhood, all would have aended Alford Grammar School and may have known Smih. illoughby parish church is of similar WappearanceoBelleau church and i, oo, is siuaed in a wooded area. American Hisorical Socieies have made a number of memorials inside he church, paricularly wih sained glass windows. One can observe he bapismal fon where Smih was chrisened on he Saurday in 1580 and noe he colorfiil depicions of he many hisorical accomplishmens of Smih in he Church windows. I should be noed ha Smih died in London June 12"I 1631 and he is buried in S. Sepulchre s Church here. S pace will no allow a complee depicion of he many villages ha we visied which are relaed o Fulgham family hisory. I will close wih abriefrecouningof a few of he mos Ahe imporan ones no previously menioned: '- Bilsby: The home parish of ReverendJohn Wheelwrigh before his emigraion o Massachuses in Bilsby is abou 3 miles Eas of Belleau. Wheelwrigh was he broher-in-law of Anne Huchinson. He laer became he founder of Exeer, New Hampshire. - Boson: The moher ciy of Boson, Massachuses and he home parish of ReverendJohn Coon, he spiriual leader of he second wave of Lincolnshire emigrans. Siuaed a he mouh of he Wiham River, Boson was animporan por ciy hrough he 17 cenury.
