2 November s Letter from the Trail Boss Wow only two more Trail Boss Letters to write I cannot believe my time as Trail boss is starting to wind down. It seems if it was yesterday that I was leaving Camp Y- Noah in February with a van full of recyclable items collected by all the princesses to help out the Parma Animal Shelter. Now I have one camp left on the agenda and that is for the Out going Sun Territory. I have met some nice families in the Sun Territory and I hope they continue the journey into the Senior Princesses. Yetta Hay Friends Always! We started taking officer nominations last month. Please consider giving back to the program by running for one of the positions. If you have any questions, feel free to ask any of the officers. Please sell those raffle tickets it is so important that we raise enough money to help offset the costs for 2010 events. See your Outpost scout or territory scout for more tickets and information. Mardi Gras Take Place February 6 th 2010 all Officers should have tickets for sale by now. This is an adult only event with food and fun, Invite your friends relatives and neighbors and help us kick off 2010 by attending this event. Well this is your chance to get a special Bead from the Trail Boss, Catch me at my house, at an officer meeting or at the soccer fields and say the following Phrase Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah Zip-A-Dee-Day Oh My Oh My what a wonderful day and I ll hand you a special bead. Shh. Don t tell your friends and lets see how many actually read this Trail Boss letter. For a short time I had My Trail Boss sign as you can see The trail boss sign was on the Maid of the Mist, and the Cave of the Winds in Niagara Falls New York. The Sign was then removed from the parking lot at Niagara Falls by someone in our 9 vehicle caravan. I hope the sign had some photos taken on the USS Little Rock and not just left in the vehicle at that event. Hope to see all of you real soon at the next event!! 11 Officer Expectations So, you think you might like to be an officer! You might ask what does that mean? What is expected of me if I were to become an officer? In anticipation of those questions, here is a brief summary of the general expectations of any officer, regardless of the position that you might hold. (Check the Princess Member Handbook for specific detailed responsibilities for each officer position). If you have questions, feel free to contact me or any officer to find out more. I hope you join us! Thanks, Phil Thorne, 2010 Trail Boss (Excerpts from officer expectations and conduct guidelines) You represent the organization as an officer at all times; both at and away from Princess events you are viewed by others as representing the group. Set the right example at all times You have a duty to support the organization in decisions both big and small. What is right for the program, and what is right for the kids should guide us in making the right decision. It is our duty to preserve this program that we currently enjoy, for the benefit of those that will come in later years. Throughout the year all officers have assigned responsibilities. Some are clearly stated in the handbook and by-laws and some are not. Regardless of where the assignment comes from whether it is voluntary or a requirement of your elected position we are all counting on you to meet your commitment. It is the responsibility of all officers to attend all Officer and Frontier meetings. Be prepared to discuss any action items that you might have. Territory Scouts should be prepared to speak of behalf of their Territories. There are a number of events during the year where support from the general officer group is needed in order to be successful. The Mardi Gras fundraiser, the Guides Night at the Races, and supporting the council fires at campouts are several of the main ones. Even though you might not be the specific officer assigned to coordinate the event, we will all need to pitch in to make sure things run smoothly. Future officers: We need your help in identifying possible candidates for future officer positions. Without good leadership going forward, the organization will eventually fail. We need to make sure that does not happen. 11

12 Do you have problems with your elbows on the table at meal time. So does one of our officers his nickname is Elbows.. To help him keep his elbows off the table he was given the duct tape treatment.. 12

14 How Indian Corn Came Into the World by Henry R. Schoolcraft (adapted) An Ojibbeway Legend Long ago there lived an Indian boy named Wunzh. His tribe was poor and they struggled to hunt for enough food. Even though life was hard, Wunzh was kind and gentle. He only wished to do something for his people to make life better. As Wunzh as walking through the forest he noted all of the beautiful and amazing plants. "The Great Spirit made all things. Could He not make it easier for us to get our food? I must try to find this out in my vision." So Wunzh returned to his lodge and fasted and slept. On the third day he saw in a vision a young brave coming down from the sky. The young brave was dressed in rich garments of green and yellow colors. On his head was a tuft of nodding green plumes, and all his motions were graceful and swaying. "I am sent to you, by that Great Spirit who made all things. He knows how you wish to do good for your people. Get up and wrestle with me, for only by overcoming me will you learn the secret." Wunzh was weak from fasting. But, he felt courage in his heart, so he got up and wrestled with the stranger. Soon he became weaker and exhausted. The stranger smiled gently on him and said: "My friend, this is enough for tonight, I will come again tomorrow." And he vanished from sight. The next day the stranger came, and Wunzh felt himself weaker than before; nevertheless he rose and wrestled bravely. Then the stranger spoke a second time. "My friend," he said, "have courage! Tomorrow will be your last trial." And he disappeared again. On the third day the stranger came as before, and the struggle was renewed. And Wunzh, though fainter in body, grew strong in mind and will, and he was determined to win for his people. He exerted all his powers, and with a yell he overcame the stranger. "O Wunzh, my friend," said the conquered one, "you have done well! Tomorrow I shall come again and you must wrestle with me for the last time. When you win, strip off my green and yellow garments and bury me. Keep watch over me and make sure that no weeds or grass grow over me. If you do this for several months you will discover how to feed your people, The next day the sky stranger came again. And, though Wunzh had fasted seven days, he felt a new power arise within him. He grasped the stranger and threw him down. He took from him his beautiful garments, and, finding him dead, buried him in the softened earth. Wunzh then returned home. For the next few months he ate sparingly. He would visit the grave of his friend every day to keep it clear of weeds and grass. One day he noted that green plumes were coming up through the ground. Weeks passed by and the summer was drawing to a close. One day Wunzh asked his father to follow him. He led him to the meadow. There, in the place where the stranger had been buried, stood a tall and graceful plant, with bright-colored, silken hair, and crowned by nodding green plumes. Its stalk was covered with waving leaves, and there grew from its sides clusters of milk-filled ears of corn, golden and sweet, each ear closely wrapped in its green husks. "It is my friend!" shouted the boy joyously; "it is Mondawmin, the Indian Corn! We need no longer depend on hunting, so long as this gift is planted and cared for. The Great Spirit has heard my voice and has sent us this food." Then the whole family feasted on the ears of corn and thanked the Great Spirit who gave it. So Indian Corn came into the world.
