Education is when you read the fine print; experience is what you get when you don t. PETE SEEGER American folk singer and activist ( ) COMMANDER S MESSAGE With March upon us we can look forward to the 10th when we can have an extra hour of daylight. Don t forget to turn your clocks ahead one hour. On the 19th we will see the first day of Spring. Just to let you know, we have had record low temperatures on most mornings here in Florida. It does warm up around 11:00 AM but we haven t seen but only a couple of days in the 80 s. It is nothing compared to what you have been experiencing though. Hopefully by the end of March things will change for the better. April will see those of our Legionnaires seeking an office to get their letters of intention to run for a office in by our membership meeting on April 15th. You can be nominated off the floor at this meeting for a office but you must be present to accept the nomination. All of the happenings that have been going on the past couple of months with the Auxiliary, Sons, Riders and Color Guard are given in their respective reports. I have to mention that just before I left for Florida, we held a service for Harry Preston, a World War II veteran who passed away on December 13th. The service was planned well in advance as Harry had made his final arrangements with Nelson Pohoreskey who works for J.W. Dimbleby Funeral Home and is a member of our Post. Nelson did a fantastic job of arranging the calling hours for Harry with a video display of Harry s life. His direction of the Color Guard and firing squad to the playing of Taps was heartwarming
2 and Harry would have been proud. Nelson, Thank You for all you did for Harry. We also want to thank U.S. Navy Commander (Ret.) Carl Gus for his eulogy at the service for Harry. We can t thank Birnie Bus Service Inc. enough for their generous donation of providing coach service to take our Color Guard and Harry s friends to Saratoga National Cemetery for his graveside service. There was some questions as to why we had Harry s picture up at the Bar. This was only temporary and his picture will be moved. All of our veterans are very special and we do everything we can to pay the highest honor to them when they pass. It was just that Harry had a special attachment to so many who saw him most every day. Also our condolences go out to Dick Singleton s family and his wife Ann on his passing. Dick was a past member of our Board of Directors and a long time member of this Post, Rest in Peace. As always, please keep our Servicemen and Women in your thoughts and prayers that they return home safely to a Grateful Nation. For the Good of the Legion, Fred Williams, Post Commander SAL NEWS The next meetings of the Son s of Post 1376 will be held on Wednesday, March 4th and April 1, 2015 starting at 7:00 PM. Mike Williams, SAL Member THIS DATE IN MILITARY HISTORY On December 22, 1944, during the World War II Battle of the Bulge, U.S. Brigadier General Anthony C. McAuliffe rejected a German demand for surrender, writing Nuts! in his official reply. MONTHLY HUMOR BURIAL PLAN A man and woman were married for many years. Whenever there was a confrontation, yelling could be heard deep into the night. The old man would shout, "When I die, I will dig my way up and out of the grave and come back and haunt you for the rest of your life!" Neighbors feared him. The old man liked the fact that he was feared. Then one evening, he died. After the burial, her neighbors, concerned for her safety, asked, "Aren't you afraid that he may indeed be able to dig his way out of the grave and haunt you for the rest of your life?" The wife said, " Let him dig. I had him buried upside down...and I know he won't ask for directions." SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE REPORT Just a friendly reminder, our Post awards two scholarships each year. One goes to a graduating senior from New Hartford High School and one goes to a child or grandchild of a Post 1376 member. This includes the Auxiliary and SAL as well as the Legion. Scholarship applications have been available since the 1st of the year at the Bar. The last day to submit an application is April 1st. Ron Ouimette, Chairman GOLF NEWS The Oneida County American Legion Golf League plays Mondays during the season at Crystal Springs Golf Course in Vernon, NY. If there are any changes you will be notified by Janice Hurley. During this past Winter we attended funeral services for Stephanie Excell, Harry Preston, William Alexander, William White, Richard Singleton and Thomas Gibson. All of these Veterans will be greatly missed. Our sympathies are extended to their families. Over the past months our Unit took part in the Veterans Christmas Party, the Children s Christmas Party and the Veterans Recognition Event at the N.H. senior center. Overall for the year 2014 the Color Guard gave back to the community 1211 hours of service while attending 65 events. Again, we are very proud of our record. All of our events are under the direction of Capt. Nelson Pohoreskey, Rd. Cdr. Larry Winfield, Lt. Duane Clark and Ladies Capt. Barb Lints. As always a special Thank You goes to the Girls at the bar who take care of us when we come back from a function and the support we get from the Post Officers and the Public. Donald Wisnoski, Historian BOARD OF DIRECTORS REPORT Your Board of Directors have been busy early this year. As you know our dining area upstairs has been our big project. The painting and remodeling has been completed. The Bar area has been updated with many changes and Looks Great!! We added a new 60 inch Flat screen TV with new audio sound system and adding our Legion WI- FI to the system we can provide a great venue for formal presentation. Also, many of our members, and guests have made comments about hosting more weddings, banquets, and host other parties as well. We will continue to make positive moves at the Legion so it would shine among the best. Thank You to all who help make this happen! Recently we installed throughout the Legion new high efficient lighting inside and outside. Also we replaced our 20 year old freezers with new high efficiency units. Both changes in lighting and new appliance will reduce our cost in our
7 utility bills. Stay tuned for more positive changes that are coming in the near future. New Hartford American Legion s Rise and Shine Golf Outing Committee is looking for volunteers to help out. This will be our fifth year for the outing and we are hoping to add more fun and excitement. We would like to add more players from all of our groups within the Legion. So we are asking the Legion, Ladies Auxiliary, Sons of the Legion, and Legion Riders to please send a volunteer to make this the best outing of all. See Terry Tesak if interested or give him a A friendly reminder from the BOD to help our bartenders and staff out. Please bring in your current membership cards and please present them if asked. As we continue to grow we need to monitor our membership. Our bartenders have many responsibilities serving our members with beverages, daily lunches, evening snacks, pull tabs, and other daily duties. Also, our legion cooks are providing some great menu's during the day and evenings. We are open for suggestions for other food items served during lunch and evenings. See our Steward, Joan Bongiorno with your ideas. One final reminder. If you notice anyone that causes any damage to our Legion they will be handled with immediate dismissal.
