2 AUXILIARY NEWS The next meeting of the Auxiliary will be on Tuesday, November 3rd, starting at 6:30 PM. We welcome new and current members to attend a few minutes early so we may have refreshments and get acquainted. Please join us. The 2016 membership dues are due now so please get them in as soon as possible. Dues remain at $25.00 and they can be sent to Janice Hurley at 1904 Redfield Ave, Utica, NY 13501, or dropped off at the Post in the Auxiliary mailbox in the Lounge area. Help us attain 100% of our quota again this year. If you paid your dues by October 31st you can attend the early bird dinner at no charge. Any questions, call Thank You. The Auxiliary will be having a Christmas Seafood Sale during the month of November. An order form is included in this newsletter, or available in the lounge by the bulletin board, or from any Auxiliary member. All orders must be prepaid at the time of order. You may place your order along with the payment in the Auxiliary mailbox in the lounge. Deadline for orders will be November 30th, with pickup being December 13th at the Legion between 10am-1:00pm. There will be no exceptions. The Post Children s Christmas Party will be held Saturday, December 5th from 12:00-2:00pm. Lunch will be served promptly at 12:00 noon. The party is for New Hartford American Legion Family Members only. A sign-up sheet will be available at the bar, starting November 1st.You must show your Post 1376 membership card when you sign up. Please state whether a girl or boy and age of the child as well as the number of adults that will attend. There will be a maximum of 6 adults per family. Children must be accompanied by the legion member that signed them up. Please remember the party is for children 10 years old and younger. The cut- off date is Sunday, November 15 th. We need this information so that each child will have a gift! Any questions on the party may be referred to Monica Lawendowski at The Veteran s Christmas Party will take place Saturday, December 12th from 12:00-2:00pm. We look forward to seeing our veterans who are at various nursing homes in the area. It s a day that a lot of them get a chance to get out and enjoy the Christmas spirit. Lunch and gifts are given to each veteran along with lots of conversation of their experiences they had during their service to our country. We will have our Post Color Guard along with all of our volunteers to help make their day a little brighter. Ladies, as always we are looking for volunteers to work that day along with the children s party. Please attend the November meeting to sign up. We would like to thank everyone who participated in our His & Hers Basket Raffle. The winners will be announced in the December newsletter since the drawing was held after press time. The Auxiliary is collecting Box Tops for Education which can be found on name brand food items. We are also collecting grocery coupons. We will be collecting both to send to our troop s families to use. Ladies, our bake sales at the Tuesday Night Dinners have started. We need bake goods to make this a successful venture. Please drop off your donations of bake goods between 3:30 and 5:00 PM upstairs. Ladies, let us know of any Auxiliary Members who are sick or in nursing homes. The new 2016 Membership Cards have been in for some time now and you have until April 1, 2016 to pay your dues, before you become delinquent. We have a few members who have had their notices of 2016 membership renewals sent back to me because their address is incorrect. As of October 15th we have 328 members of the Sons who have renewed their membership. Lets keep up the good work. We remain the largest Squadron in the Department of New York, lets keep it that way. We wish to correct a new member s name that was misspelled, again please welcome Elias Evans to our Squadron. 4 COLOR GUARD REPORT The next meeting of the Color Guard will be held on Thursday, November 19, 2015 starting at 6:00 PM. If there are any changes you will be notified by Janice Hurley. Over the past month the Unit took part in Funeral services for veterans Denis Huckabone, Charles Bronk and Paul Cecilia. Our sympathies are extended to their families. During the past weeks we participated by posting Colors at the E.R. Herriman High School Cross Country Meet, Gold Star Mothers Memorial service, Harry Preston Memorial and Viet Nam Veterans Dinner at our Post. On December 5th we will have our Annual Christmas Party at the Post for our Color Guard members. The Ladies are asked to bring a dessert as always. Hours are 5-9 with entertainment. As of this writing we have taken part in 48 Functions and have given back to our local community 790 hours of time. As always, we are proud of this. All of our events are under the direction of Capt. Nelson Pohoreskey, Rd. Cdr. Larry Winfield, Lt. Duane Clark and Ladies Capt. Barb Lints. Always a special Thank You goes to the Girls and Tim at the Bar who take care of us when we come back from a function and the support we get from the Post Officers and the Public. BOY SCOUT REPORT New Hartford Boy Scout Troop 4 plans to turn out to help celebrate Veterans Day at the Veterans Memorial Park in New Hartford which will take place at 3:00 PM on November 11th. Three days later the annual Scouting For Food Drive will be held on November 14th with the drop off point at our Post parking lot. Once again all food donations and collections will be given to the Feed Our Vets Organization. Mr. Rich Synek will have his trailer in our Legion parking lot between the morning hours of 10 AM to Noon. Thanks in advance to all who may have may have donated food or made monetary donations to this worthy cause. Also, in advance, we would also like to thank the Legion along with Terry Tesak and Heather who provide popcorn, soda and coffee to our participants. 6 MONTHLY HUMOR AIN T THAT THE TRUTH Most seniors never get enough exercise. In His wisdom God decreed that seniors become forgetful so they would have to search for their glasses, keys and other things thus doing more walking. And God looked down and saw that it was good. Then God saw there was another need. In His wisdom He made seniors lose coordination so they would drop things requiring them to bend, reach & stretch. And God looked down and saw that it was good. Then God considered the function of bladders and decided seniors would have additional calls of nature requiring more trips to the bathroom, thus providing more exercise. God looked down and saw that it was good. So if you find as you age, you are getting up and down more, remember it s God s will. It is all in your best interest even though you mutter under your breath. #9 Death is the number 1 killer in the world. #8 Life is sexually transmitted. #7 Good health is merely the slowest possible rate at which one can die. #6 Men have 2 motivations: hunger and hanky panky, and they can't tell them apart. NEW HARTFORD POST 1376 LEGION RIDERS REPORT The next meeting of the Riders will be held on November 15, 2015, 12:15 PM at our Post. Please be reminded that your 2016 Riders dues are due. You can pay your dues by dropping them off in an envelope with your name on them in our Riders mail box in the lounge and address it to Tom Liesch. Your 2016 ALR ID cards and a receipt will be returned to you ASAP. The American Legion Riders of Post 1376 would like to thank the Legionnaires, the Sons of the American Legion and the Auxiliary of Post 1376 for all of the support that they have given us over this past year. Everyone has treated us with respect and always made us feel welcome. The proceeds from all of our rides go to charitable causes. The first four rides are donated to Veteran s causes and the last ride is our annual community donation. The Veteran organizations include the Disabled American Veterans, the American Legion Legacy Fund, the local Feed- Our-Vets Fund and the Utica Veteran s Outreach Center. The community ride changes each year and has included the Millennium Experience, the Stephen Swan Humane Society, the Oneida County Historical Society, the Freedom Park in Camden, Saint Mother Marrianne s West Side Kitchen and others. This month s meeting, (November 15 th at 12:15), will be our final for This year s remaining activities will include, weather permitting, participation in the Veteran s Parade in Whitesboro, usually held on the weekend before Veteran s Day and our annual Christmas Party. Personally, I am very proud of all of our Riders and Supporters and proud of all of the good work that they have accomplished over the past seven years for our Veteran s and community causes. 7 or National at For the Good of the Legion: Timothy Converse, President Auxiliary, said Bob Sussan, chairman of The American Legion Riders Advisory Committee. From the onset, the Riders have adopted the Legacy Scholarship Fund, and annually we ride for the children of our fallen brothers and sisters. When the first Legacy Run left Indianapolis and headed to Salt Lake City 10 years ago, its participants had a goal of raising $50,000. On Sept. 1st more than $812,000 was donated to the Legacy Run during the Legion s National Convention in Baltimore. That brought the total for this year s Run to a record $1,249, for The American Legion Legacy Fund, which provides college scholarships for the children of fallen military personnel who died on active duty on or since Sept. 11, I want everyone in here to stand now and give a great ovation to what a great group they are, Michael D. Helm, National Commander, said of the Riders after announcing the donation total. Hundreds of American Legion Riders took part in the four-day Legacy Run which left Indianapolis on Aug. 23 and covered more than 1,000 miles through Kentucky, Ohio and Pennsylvania before arriving in Maryland. They collected more than $436,000 prior to and during the ride.once in Baltimore, the donations poured in. The Department of Florida donated $173,000, which included $93,000 raised by the collaboration of Post 323 (Lehigh Acres), and Adam Sandoval and his Scootin America cross-country trip visiting Harley-Davidson posts. Another $103,754 came from the Department of Minnesota, $64,566 from the Department of Missouri, $59,050 from the Department of Wisconsin, $54,000 from the Department of New York and $52,512 from the Department of South Carolina, American Legion Post 593 in Converse, Texas, donated $50,000, and in doing so surpassed $300,000 in total donations made to the Legacy Run since its start. In 10 years, the Legacy Run has raised more than $6 million for the Legacy Fund. The Riders are the only program that encompasses the Legion, the Sons of The American Legion and QUEEN OF HEARTS UPDATE The Queen of Hearts was $ as of Wednesday October 14th. Tickets are $1.00 each, and you can purchase as many as you like during the week at the Bar, or on Wednesday night at our Hearts Table. The tickets are deposited in the Queen of Hearts Box and on Wednesday night at 8:15 PM one ticket is drawn from the box by a patron in the Post. A member of our staff will then take the ticket to the Queen of Hearts board and remove the card from the sealed envelope that was chosen. If the Queen of Hearts is in the envelope, that person wins 60% of the Pot. 8 POST HISTORY In May 1947 brought about the New Hartford Legion appointment of Arthur McLoughlin and Edward Roman to seek consideration to name new streets in the New Hartford Village after 19 deceased veterans, from the village, who died in service. Raymond Driscoll was named chairman of the Memorial Day Committee and plans were confirmed to hold a public service in front of the grade school. All members present pledged attendance. It was also announced, by John Hart, Chairman, that George Joseph and Walter McInrow were named to plan a public clambake to be held in July or August. A donation was voted in for the South Utica Drum Corps for services given at a parade last Monday. Commander James Owens, presided at the meeting held in Butler Memorial Hall. The body of Cpl. Edward J. Vinci, who was killed Sept 26, 1944 in Germany, would arrive in Utica, Saturday morning at the train station in November The New Hartford Legion Post would send a delegation to meet Cpl. Vinci at the train station and will accord military honors at the grave site in Calvary Cemetery. Cpl. Vinci was born in CT. in 1921 the son of Mary Pecci Vinci Costello and the late Edward Vinci Sr. He was from New Hartford where he graduated high school, the State Teachers College in PA., majoring in physical education. He entered the service in Feb 1942 and was in Germany one month when he was killed in action. August 1947 it was reported by Veteran Officials, who were in favor of sending American Troops to Greece, in support of the Truman Doctrine. Of eight Utica veterans officials contacted, seven agreed with Paul Griffith, National Commander of the American Legion in New York City. The eighth urged investigation before any action be taken. James Owens, commander of the New Hartford Legion Post 1376 was in full accord and stated that it was about time we did something about the situation over there. If troops are needed they should be sent. It s time to back up our policy with force. Laura (Chick) Perkins The History of Veterans Day World War I known at the time as The Great War - officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, in the Palace of Versailles outside the town of Versailles, France. However, fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, November 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of the war to end all wars. This photo was taken at 10:58 a.m., on November 11, 1918, two minutes before the armistice ending World War I went into effect World War I, then normally referred to simply as The Great War (no one could imagine any war being greater!), ended with the implementation of an armistice [temporary cessation of hostilities-in this case until the final peace treaty, the infamous Treaty of Versailles, was signed in 1919] between the Allies and Germany at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of November, November 11: President Wilson proclaims the first Armistice Day with the following words: "To us in America, the reflections of armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from

9 which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations." The original concept for the celebration was for the suspension of business for a two minute period beginning at 11 A.M., with the day also marked by parades and public meetings. for the District of Columbia. But in practice the states almost always follow the Federal lead in designation of holidays World War II and the Korean War create millions of additional war veterans in addition to those of the First World War already honored by Armistice Day. Unknown U.S. soldier from the North African American Cemetery 1920 On the second anniversary of the armistice, France and the United Kingdom hold ceremonies honoring their unknown dead from the war. In America, at the suggestion of church groups, President Wilson names the Sunday nearest Armistice Day Sunday, on which should be held services in the interest of international peace Congress passes legislation approving the establishment of a Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery. November 11 is chosen for the date of the ceremony. According on October 20, Congress declares November 11, 1921 a legal Federal holiday to honor all those who participated in the war. The ceremony was conducted with great success Congress adopts a resolution directing the President to issue an annual proclamation calling on the observance of Armistice Day. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, most states establish November 11 as a legal holiday and at the Federal level, an annual proclamation is issued by the President Congress passes legislation on May 13 making November 11 a legal Federal holiday, Armistice Day. The United States has no 'actual' national holidays because the states retain the right to designate their own holidays. The Federal government can in fact only designate holidays for Federal employees and President Eisenhower signing HR7786, changing Armistice Day to Veterans Day On June 1, President Eisenhower signs legislation changing the name of the legal holiday from Armistice Day to Veteran's Day Congress passes the Monday Holiday Law which established the fourth Monday in October as the new date for the observance of Veteran's Day. The law is to take effect in The Federal observance of Veterans Day is held on the fourth Monday of October. Initially all states follow suit except Mississippi and South Dakota. Other states changed their observances back to November 11 as follows: Louisiana and Wisconsin; Kentucky, Arkansas, Connecticut, Georgia, Maine, South Carolina, West Virginia; California, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, Utah, West Virginia, Wyoming 1975 Legislation passed to return the Federal observance of Veteran's Day to November 11, based on popular support throughout the nation. Since the change to the fourth Monday in October, 46 states had either continued to commemorate November 11 or had reverted back to the original date based on popular sentiment. The law was to take effect in Veteran's Day observance reverts to November 11.

10 PROPOSED BY-LAW CHANGE The following amendment to our By-Laws was presented to members present at the September 16, 2015 Membership Meeting at which a quorum was present. This proposed change to our By-Laws was published in the October Newsletter and is in this newsletter and will be posted in the Legion 15 days prior to voting on this By-Law change at the November 18, 2015 Membership Meeting: Article II-Administration: Changed by the addition of a new Section 11 to read as follows: Section 11. Employees of the Post (Full Time, Part Time or Temporary) are not eligible to be Elective Officers, Executive Committeeman or Members of the Board of Directors as specified under Article V- Officers, of the Constitution and By- Laws and Article III-Post Executive Board, Article IV Duties of Legion Officers and Article XIV- Board of Directors. In addition, Post Employees shall serve in an advisory role as required or requested at scheduled Post Membership, Executive Board, Board of a Directors or Appointed Standing Committee Meetings in accordance with the By -Laws and Job Description. This was proposed to avoid any conflict of interest. For the Good of the Legion, Gary Fountain, Post Commander NOTICE PLEASE READ!! Please plan on attending our meeting and voice any concerns that you may have. As always, there will be refreshments served after the meeting. We currently have 589 members paid so far, which includes 12 new members. This gives us 66% of our quota of 880. If you have not renewed your dues for 2016 please do so soon, so that you will not remain in arrears and still be continuous.
