2 COMMANDER S MESSAGE Well if April showers bring May flowers then we should be waist high in blossoms, that is if it ever gets warm enough to let them bloom. It s been a rough spring so far, weather wise, but things are moving along nicely here at the Post. Our last breakfast, despite the nastiest weather, was the best we had this year. The Friday Fish Fries are doing good as well as our daily lunches and the evening kitchen which includes " Sammy s Night" on Thursday evenings. Our next breakfast will be on Mothers Day, May 13 th.. Don t forget that on Wednesday May 16th we will be holding elections for our officers and Executive Committee. The slate has been set and the voting will be from 12:00 noon until 7:00 pm. The ballot you will be asked to consider is published later in this newsletter. I have decided to run another year as your Commander and I am running unopposed. I want to thank all of the officers for their support. Also remember that May 16th is the evening of our general membership meeting which now begins at 6:30 pm. This will be the last membership meeting until September and hopefully we will see some new faces. Finally, our Post Memorial Day Ceremony will be on the 28th of 12:00 Noon, weather permitting, out in front of our Post. Of course as we ve had to do more often lately, if the weather does not cooperate, we will have it inside. Following that we will have our ceremony at the New Hartford Veterans Memorial at 3:00 pm. Hope to see you there. Haven t received confirmations as of the time of this writing but I m sure our Color Guard will be attending ceremonies at Hughes and Myles schools and Sunset Woods on May 25th. 4 Pictured above is the cover of Samuel Mastrogiacomo s Autobiography: FOR GOD AND COUNTRY IN THAT ORDER This is a true story of a young flyer who flew with the 445th Bomb Group of the famous 8th Air Force as a tail gunner in a B-24 Liberator, during World War II. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross and The Air Medal w/ 5 Oak Leaf Cluster for having shot down five German enemy aircraft. His plane crashed landed and he was a POW and escaped out. FRED & SAM Back in March of this year I stopped by the New Smyrna Beach Municipal Airport to see a display of vintage aircraft from World War II. I introduced myself to a World War II Veteran by the name of Sam Mastrogiacomo. Sam was giving a tour of a B-24 Liberator named The Witchcraft that was on display. As we talked he explained that this B-24 was one of the Bombers that he was assigned to during the war. Sam explained that The Witchcraft, which survived the war is the only B-24 left that is still airworthy. Sam s name is under the tail turret where Sam was a tail gunner. Also on display were a B-17 and a old B-25 Bomber along with a P-51 Mustang and Navy Hell Cat Dive Bomber. THE 445th BOMB GROUP The 445th Bomb Group flew B-24 Liberators from Tibenham, Norfolk in England. The crews' first mission was bombing U-boat installations at Kiel on 13 December The Group continued to hit strategic targets in Germany, including the aircraft components factory... On Sam s 13th and last Mission in February 1944: they were under fighter attack for 2 hours & 30 minutes. Of 25 B-24s over the target, 13 were shot down. The target was the Messerschmitt factory and it was 80% destroyed. Sam s plane was shot down on 9, April 1944 in their B-24 # named 'BTO' (Big Time Operator) by a German FW 190 Focke Wulf and landed in Sweden and was interned there. Sam and his crew were held for several months in Sweden, Sam and several others escaped after the D-Day Invasion. Although Sam never really pursued getting his Distinguished Flying Cross, he received an Air Medal for every plane he shot down. After five Air Medals he was entitled to The Distinguished Flying Cross. On October 4, 2003 Sam was presented his Distinguished Flying Cross by Brigadier General Christopher Joniec, Commander of the 514th Air Mobility Wing, McGuire Air Force Base, New Jersey.
