In his devotional book, Ronald Greer retells the story of Hendrik Kraemer, a remarkable lay missionary from the Dutch church who spent much of his adult life serving God in Indonesia. He was in his native Holland when the Second World War broke out. The Gestapo dominated Holland, forcing Dutch Jews to places like Buchenwald and Dachau. Late one night a group of Dutch laypersons came to Hendrik Kraemer. They said to him, Dr. Kraemer, what shall we do? Our neighbors are dying. We don t know what is going to become of us as a nation. Please, if you can, tell us what to do. We have got to do something, and we have got to do it now. Hendrik Kraemer said to them, I am not going to tell you what to do, but I will tell you who you are. And if you know who you are, then you will know what to do. Dr. Kraemer opened his Bible to I Peter and began to read: You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a dedicated nation, a people claimed by God as his own, to proclaim the triumphs of Him who has called you out of the darkness and into his marvelous light. I Peter 2:9 Dr. Kraemer closed his Bible. Do you know who you are? he asked. Then you will know what to do. Thanking him, the group left his home. That night, they formed the Dutch Resistance. What Kraemer knew to be true for individuals is also true for the church. When faced with difficult decisions, awkward dilemmas and mission uncertainty we must remember who we are in order to know God s will for our actions. As we seek to live and serve with integrity in the twenty first century with all the culture s confusion, shallowness, expediency and self-centeredness pulling us away from a witness of authenticity, we need to remember whose we are. If you know who you are you will know what to do. At St. Luke we are: the Community of Jesus Christ, created by the Word, for the World. We are not called to isolation but to community---a unique kind of community that finds its very definition in relationship to Jesus as Savior and Christ as Lord of our lives and of the community. We are not the result of our own self-construction. We are that community created by the transforming power of God s Word. After you have partaken of the cup, you may remain in prayer or return to your seat. Those who wish to receive Holy Communion in their seats may so indicate to the usher.
