Perhaps the greatest disappointment of all is the hollow promise from a multi-media culture of meaningful connectedness through virtual reality and supremely unreal reality shows. It seems that our whole culture is bent on offering the illusion of intimacy through celebrity and entertainment. Radio personality Garrison Keillor once told a story about Elizabeth June, the Human Balloon, a lonely, obese woman, not quite right in the head. She was often the butt of cruel jokes, because she would go into the woods, spread a picnic blanket, and serve cocktails to her imaginary friends, whom she had chosen out of a Sears & Roebuck catalogue. At the end of his monologue Keillor said, with a jolt of honesty rare for an entertainer, Farewell my friends in radio land---and when I say that, remember that you are my friends in the same way Elizabeth June s imaginary friends were to her. Ouch! We loved his storytelling so much, we felt like we knew him as a friend. Keillor reminds us that electronic connectedness is no substitute for meaningful relationship. We live in a world of searching souls looking for significance and longing for a community in which they are loved and valued. Listen to this description of the New Testament church: They devoted themselves to the apostles teaching, and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and prayers. Awe came upon everyone and all who believed were together. This is not the story of a culture of disappointment but the story of a community of fulfillment. The church is not a virtual community but a vital community, where Christ s life and love are shared. It was true of the early church and it is true of St. Luke. St. Luke is a special place for believing in the love and power of God. It is a place for belonging to a family of faith in deep and meaningful ways. St. Luke is a place for becoming the people God longs for us to be. We all long for significance and community. I invite you to find them both at St. Luke this Sunday. A local doctor writes a prescription for the caregiver of his patient which reads Take at least one day a week for yourself. Do you know a caregiver who needs some relief? Respite Care Ministry may be just what the doctor ordered. The St. Luke School Annual Fund Campaign bridges the gap between tuition revenue and the school s operating and facility expenses a gap that could otherwise be filled only by a tuition increase.
