3 ST. PATRICK CHURCH Page 3 PORTLAND, MICHIGAN A Cause Worth Dying For 2 Maccabees 7:1-2, 9-14 They called the World War II generation the greatest generation because they were willing to sacrifice everything for the cause of their country. Subsequent generations became more pampered. They were more accustomed to receive, rather than to sacrifice. The World War II generation was ready to die for what they believed in. Later generations may not get up off the couch for anything. Heroism comes from strong belief. If you believe in something strongly enough, you will sacrifice your life for it. You might give up your life for your spouse or your child. But would you be ready to give it up for your country or for your faith? The Second Book of Maccabees tells an extraordinary tale of a family who died rather than eat pork. Pork! They realized that to do so would betray the faith of their ancestors. They were ready to be tortured and killed in order to encourage others to keep the faith they had received. In their distress, they held out hope in a resurrection in which all that was wrong would be made right again. They held this belief even before the coming of Christ, who would reveal the nature of the resurrection to his believers. As Christians we hold faith in the greatest gift of all, eternal life. Are you willing to lose your life for this cause? Would you give up your life to inspire others and to gain an everlasting reward?. Written by Paul Turner. Copyright 2009, Resource Publications, Inc., , All rights reserved. Reprinted with permission from Lectionary Bulletin Inserts, Year C: First and Second Readings. Family Perspective By Bud Ozar The question of the Sadducees to Jesus is framed in a story about a family with seven brothers and their sister-in-law. Through story telling families remember their shared past and expose the companionship of God in your family from generation to generation. STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS Rather, we wanted to present ourselves as a model for you, so that you might imitate us. 2 THESSALONIANS 3:9 Most people who live a grateful and generous lifestyle don t go around bragging about it. But through their actions and words, others do take notice. They notice because of the joy and peace that results and other people desire this in their own life. Know that the way you live your life may be the only interaction others have with the Catholic faith. Prayer of the Faithful That just as God shows mercy on us, we show mercy with each other. Miscellaneous Quotes by Pope Francis The future of humanity does not lie solely in the hands of great leaders, the great powers and the elites. It is fundamentally in the hands of peoples and in their ability to organize. It is in their hands, which can guide with humility and conviction this process of change. I am with you. Each of us, let repeat from the heart: no family without lodging, no rural worker without land, no laborer without rights, no people without sovereignty, no individual without dignity, no child without childhood, no young person without a future, no elderly person without a venerable old age. Keep up your struggle and, please, take great care of Mother Earth. July 9, 2015 Popular Movements ALTAR APPOINTMENTS November 12th & 13th 4:30 PM Lori Schrauben Fr. Do your children/youth hear you speak positively about Priests, Sisters, and Brothers? Do you regularly pray for an increase in Vocations to the Priesthood and Religious Life? Would you support your son or daughter if they expressed a desire to become a Priest, Sister, or Brother? Have you ever considered that it takes a whole faith community to bring a Vocation to maturity? Do young people see you living out your Catholic faith with integrity and a deep joy? Do young people see you being a good steward of your time, talent, and treasure in parish life and beyond? Do you make time each day to pray together with your family and go to church every week on Saturday or Sunday? Do you believe in Jesus Real Presence in the Eucharist or is it just a symbol for you? LJust some thoughts to consider! Fr. Larry To The Parents of Young Children, May we suggest. Relax! God put the wiggle in children; don t feel you have to suppress it in God s house. All are welcome! Sit toward the front, where it is easier for your little ones to see and hear what s going on at the altar. They tire of seeing the backs of others heads. Quietly explain the parts of the Mass and actions of the priest, altar servers, choir, etc. Sing the hymns, pray, and voice the responses. Children learn liturgical behavior by copying you. If you have to leave Mass with your child, feel free to do so, but please come back. As Jesus said, Let the children come to me. Remember that the way we welcome children in Church directly affects the way they respond to the Church, to God, and to one another. Let them know that they are at home in this house of worship. To The Members of Our Parish The presence of children is a gift to the Church and they are a reminder that our parish is growing. Please welcome our children and give a smile of encouragement to their parents. These are some suggestions found on a pew card and thought they could benefit our parishioners and families with young children Thank you Jan & Judy Baxter for the beautiful mums on the altar in the memory of Dorothy Goodman Knights News Upcoming events at the Knights Hall 11/6/16 Bingo at 2:00 P.M. at Knights Hall 11/7/16 Business Meeting 8 P.M.at Knights Hall 11/13/16 Knights of Columbus Council 2168 Corporate Communion at the 9:30 A.M Mass. November 6th is the beginning of this week.

6 Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 6 November 6, 2016 Tune in to See St. Pat s Quiz Bowl Team on TV This week s column is written by St. Patrick High School Quiz Bowl coach Mr. Terry Austen. The St. Patrick Quiz Bowl Team has come a long way since We used to struggle just to win a few matches throughout our Mid-Michigan Academic League (MMAL) schedule. But, in recent years we have finished near the top of the league, including our best-ever finish of 2nd in the MMAL and 2nd in the year-end tournament, both last year. This year, we have our sights set on qualifying for the state tournament by either finishing 1st in the MMAL or the year-end tournament. I m confident that we have the talent and experience to pull it off and I m very excited to see what the team will accomplish! I believe this would be the first time in school history that a Quiz Bowl team would qualify for the state tournament. Unfortunately, we re off to a bit of a slow start after dropping two out of three very close matches to begin the season, but we re looking forward to improving our record in the coming weeks. We have had to be a little creative with practice times and meets as our small student body is stretched between multiple sports teams and a Portland Civic Players production. We meet three days per week at lunch for practices, which consist mostly of keeping up to date on current events. And I m grateful to our sports coaches who are flexible and willing to allow their players to miss practice for a meet. The league schedule has been condensed to just four weekly meets that we attempt to sandwich between the fall and winter sports seasons. The league tournament always takes place the first Saturday after Thanksgiving break. Another new challenge this year was participating in Quizbusters for the first time in school history. Quizbusters is a televised quiz show produced by WKAR and is currently filming its 28th season. In recent years, I noticed a lot of MMAL teams joining the show and thought, why can t we do that? So I contacted the producer last year to get placed on a waiting list. Fortunately, this fall I received a call letting us know that a spot had opened up. Our first round match was filmed on Oct. 4 against Nexus Academy of Lansing. The match will be televised on Nov. 5. I won t spoil the results here, but tune in to see some goofy answers and an epic halftime show put on by myself and alternate Stephen Wernet. Wish us luck as we finish our season and hope to participate in the state tournament! The 2016 St. Patrick Quiz Bowl roster is made of the following members: Varsity: Matt Jandernoa (S), Doug Cope (J), Colin Pline (J), Kenny Hartwick (J), Joe Timmer (So) JV: Kara Shaw (So), Stephen Wernet (So), Jake Pung (So), Veronica White (F) Give Thanks!
