2 ST. PATRICK CHURCH Page 2 PORTLAND, MICHIGAN Masses for the Week of November 1, 2015 Mon. 11/2 THIS WEEK IN OUR PARISH November 1, 2015-November 8, 2015 ALTAR APPOINTMENTS November 7th & 8th STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:3 Poor in spirit is confusing for many of us. It simply means to place your trust in God, putting His will first and being strong in faith. As we celebrate the lives of the saints on All Saints Day, remember, we, too are called to be saints. Dialing down our own pride and ego and turning up the humility will help us on our path to sainthood. That we increase our trust in God, putting Him first in all things. Sponsor of the Week: Please add Trierweiler Insurance as sponsor of the week Bulletin deadline is 10:00 AM Monday for inclusion in Sunday s bulletin.
3 All Saints Day Page 3 November 1, 2015 Seeing into Heaven Revelation 7:2-4, 9-14 A lot of the good you do goes unnoticed. You care for family. You donate to charity. You pray for the needy. Perhaps you perform civic services that few people ever see. You might even do some things in secret precisely to avoid the attention that a reward would bring. Your satisfaction is often its own reward. You believe that God sees, and that is enough. You are not alone. The good that many people do can never be fully rewarded. Society owes a debt of gratitude to everyday heroes who improve life for the masses by performing the simplest of deeds for the sake of giving care. Imagine that multitude of good people gathered together. Imagine them before the throne of the Lamb, worshiping God. Imagine them wearing as reward the uniform of heaven white garments washed in the blood of the Lamb. That is the vision that John sees in the Book of Revelation. The throng of the blessed gathers to give praise, only to be counted among those who survived the trials of life and persevered in their faith. On All Saints we remember that numberless host. They inspire us to continue the good we do, even if no one notices. Select Quotes from Pope Francis Encyclical Laudato Si On Care for Our Common Home "We need to reject a magical conception of the market, which would suggest that the problems can be solved simply by an increase in the profits of companies or individuals." (190) Family Perspective By Bud Ozar Anyone can be saint in front of strangers but the daily acts of mercy, making peace, forgiveness, listening, and dying to oneself within the family are religious acts. Family life is the turf of sanctity and parents lead the way. Attention Military Veterans! You are cordially invited to join the faculty, staff and students of St. Patrick School in our annual Veteran's Day Observance. The ceremony is November 11th at 10AM in the school gym. A cookies and coffee reception will immediately follow the ceremony in the Parish Hall for our honored veterans and their families Be a Hero! Donate Blood! 5 All Saints Day Page 5 November 1, 2015 Celebrating Vocation Awareness Week The week of November 1-7 is Vocation Awareness Week across the United States. It is a week dedicated to promoting vocations to the Catholic religious life through prayer and education. According to a video on the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) website, there are four things that occur in a young person s life that will encourage them to listen to God s call to the religious life. 1. Receiving a Catholic education (elementary, high school, college) 2. Being involved in Catholic youth groups/religious education 3. Receiving encouragement from others 4. Knowing priests/sisters personally The first three items on the list are a given, for students at St. Pat's. We also work hard to give our students the opportunity to meet and get to know priests and sisters. On Monday of Vocations Awareness Week, Trinitarian Sisters from Lowell will visit and talk with our students about life as a Religious Sister. On Thursday, Fr. Ron Hutchinson, Director of Priestly Vocations for the Diocese of Grand Rapids will preside at our school Mass. We are also blessed to have four of our graduates, three of whom are in the seminary and one who plans on being a Religious Sister. These four grads are: Ryan Riley, who graduated from St. Patrick High School in Ryan attended Alma College earning a degree in accounting. He worked for six years for the State of Michigan, Auditor General, and entered the seminary in Ryan was ordained a Transitional Deacon at St. Thomas Catholic Church in East Lansing on May 16, He hopes be ordained to the priesthood next year. Mike has less than three years until ordination and will do an internship in the Diocese of Grand Rapids in the spring. Johnathan Johnson, who graduated from St. Patrick High School in He earned an accounting degree from Michigan State University in He worked for one and a half years for Michigan State University and entered the seminary in Johnathan just started Pre-Theology II at Mundelein Seminary and will earn his Master s in Philosophy and Religious Studies in May He hopes to be ordained to the Priesthood in June Wendy Rutherford, who graduated from St. Patrick High School in 2009 and graduated with honors from Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences. During this time she will be given an assignment in a ministry of teaching or in one of a variety of roles in their hospital system. After a total of eight years in this formation process, Wendy will make her final vows. I encourage you to pray for vocations and to keep our four alumni who have been called to be priests/sisters in your prayers during Vocations Awareness Week and beyond.
