OUT OF THE MOUTHS OF BABES A Sunday school teacher asked her children as they were on the way to church service, And why is it necessary to be quiet in church? One bright little girl replied, Because people are sleeping. FROM THE PASTOR In a world problematic for generations with the challenge of poverty, we are reminded that The Poor You Will Always Have - Get out and work alongside them as recounted by Colleen Dunne development director for De La Salle Blackfeet School in Browning, Montana. She writes There s a popular slogan today: Break the Cycle of Poverty. This approach involves much more than giving to charity. It confronts generational poverty, and it not only challenges the marginalized to see the possibilities for better lives, but challenges societal structures to change policies or systems that make it harder for the poor to succeed. Each day as I look at my social media feed, or watch the news, it seems the stories of the marginalized are constantly in front of me. Whether they are stories from the most recent natural disaster; of refugees from war-torn countries; of hunger, struggle for survival in developing countries or children trapped in poverty, there are countless ways each day that we recognize the plight of the marginalized, and countless opportunities to reflect on our own responsibility in working toward change. Yet when it comes to how we perceive our responsibility to help the poor, we often hear mixed messages. Even Jesus gives us a mixed message as he says to the woman with the alabaster jar, The poor you
4 PAGE FOUR will always have with you. Is this a message that no matter what our efforts, they will not make a difference? Is Jesus telling us that among us there are people who struggle to make ends meet, people who struggle to survive - and that we should accept this fact? There is a danger of taking this quote out of context. In other parts of the Gospel, we hear Jesus tell the rich young man, If you wish to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me. Jesus is making it a condition for this man to give all that he has to be the poor before he can follow him, which, in the end, turns out to be too much to ask; the story tells us the man went away sad. Often it can seem like a futile effort to give to the poor, knowing that what we give through charity will barely make a difference in helping to make someone s life better. There s a popular slogan today: Break the Cycle of Poverty. This approach involves much more than giving to charity. It confronts generational poverty, and it not only challenges the marginalized to see possibilities for better lives, but challenges societal structures to change policies or systems that make it harder for the poor to succeed. But it is a long, slow process to empower marginalized populations with the tools and resources they need to make a better life for themselves, their families and their communities. I don t think I fully understood what it meant to break the cycle until I started working with people who were committed to the process and deeply engaged with the marginalized. This type of work takes patience, and success comes slowly; it is an investment of effort that often takes years to see results. However, the people who do this type of work are inspiring, and they bring to their work a sense of commitment that first and foremost recognizes the dignity of the people on whose behalf they work. There are countless examples of places where antipoverty work is being done in schools, in neighborhood centers, with migrant workers, or on the streets. One example that has always inspired me is in a small town in the mountains of Guatemala. Several women in this town are widows, either by circumstance of the violence that exists in their own community or because of their husbands attempts to cross into the United States to find work. There are not many opportunities for employment in this area, and many of these women have children to care for, so their opportunities are even more limited. These women have the skill to create beautiful weavings. Through the effort to create a market for these weavings, two religious sisters who worked in this town for years created a program for the women to sell their goods. This program has allowed the women to find dignity through the weavings they create and has allowed them to pay for education for their children in hopes of eventually breaking the cycle of poverty for their families. Though the results of this effort have been slow to come, it serves as an example of how families can work together to create better lives themselves, instead of continually depending on outside sources for aid. Sometimes it seems that the overwhelming presence of poverty is too much, that it will never be eliminated. Even in today s world, where so many things are advanced, the poor and marginalized yet remain a huge presence among us. However, we can find hope by getting our and seeing how committed people strive to break the cycle of poverty. They are doing more than just keeping up with these stories on a social media feed. Jesus did tell us, The poor you will always have with you, but perhaps this should be seen not as a fatalistic pronouncement, but as more of a message of where we are called to be in the world - alongside the poor, making a difference for others. Our support of Catholic Charities in our own Archdiocese and beyond is a real effort to make a difference. God bless you. Msgr. Finn
