2 NOTE FROM The Pastor Dear Parishioners, Today is Gaudete Sunday, the third Sunday of Advent. Gaudete means rejoice be glad! in Latin. There is very much in the Christian life for which to rejoice and be glad. The words that issue from the innocent hearts and mouths of our children can certainly make us smile and laugh. (See Kids Say The Darnedest Things... At Mass, 1 December 2018, aleteia.org.) A woman named Armelle spoke of her little girl. She had asked her mom why the Apostles were so sad about Jesus death on Good Friday. Armelle answered that they loved Jesus and He died. Yes, but Mom, He will rise again in 3 days. And 3 days is not long. Mom then told her that the Apostles did not know that. Her response? It s been 2,000 years, they could at least have figured it out by now. How I laughed! said Armelle. Another little girl said once to her mother during Mass, while showing her the bandage on her knee, Mom, I suffer! I suffer under Pontius Pilate! thinking that was an expression that meant it hurt really bad. A third little girl made everyone laugh at church by continuing to sing the Alleluia even after the priest began the reading of the Holy Gospel. She used the 18-month-old girl version: Ah the noodles, ah! The parish still remembers. The little boys say some amusing things as well. A woman named Marie tells the story of her 3-year-old son. She and her boy were staring at a statue of Our Lady of Lourdes, with her hands folded together in prayer. Marie said, You see, it s Mary, Jesus mother. And you know what she s doing? He answered, She s getting ready to dive. This took place during the summer when he was learning to swim. A bell rang at the moment of the Consecration and a little voice rose out of the silence: It s Jesus (on the phone). He can t come! At the back of the church the priest and deacons were standing around ready to begin the procession. A two-year-old named Blandine asked a deacon, Why are you wear (sic) a maternity dress if you have no baby inside? Her mother Camille laughed so hard she was unable to sing the entrance hymn during the procession. Laetitia tells the story of her little cousin, who said at the collection: First we re bored, and then we have to pay! Then the child pointed at the red sanctuary lamp candle above the Tabernacle and she asked, When will it be green so that we can leave? Julie Esther s little boy received his First Holy Communion. Upon reception of the most august Sacrament he looked the priest right in the eyes and exclaimed with great enthusiasm, Jesus is really good!!! Jesus is really good. Indeed. And so are His children. They warm our hearts and make us laugh. Thank you, God, for sharing Your children with us! (They belong primarily to Him, you know.) God Bless You! 3 Sacred Heart : If you and your spouse are considering a Private/Catholic school for your children, Sacred Heart is the perfect choice. The school currently has an enrollment of 262 students all of whom are inspired and educated in the image of God. One hundred percent of our 8th grade graduates are accepted into their high school of choice. Many of our students are awarded high school scholarships, are accepted into advanced/ specialized programs and our school has among the highest ELA and Math scores on Staten Island. We place emphasis on technology in the classrooms as our kindergarten eighth grade students have Chromebooks in the classroom. Homework assignments, upcoming events and school news are posted on our school website. Also our basketball, soccer, swimming and golf teams are not only competitive, they win! Sacred Heart also has a Junior National Honor Society as well as drama, art and chess clubs. In addition, we offer a free Pre-K and financial assistance is available to students from K-8th grade. Children s Mass December 24th 5 PM: The annual Sacred Heart Children s Mass will take place on Christmas Eve, December 24th, at 5 PM. Bond Sacred Heart Capital Campaign: We are very pleased and excited to announce that Sacred Heart Parish has met its Capital Campaign goal of $926,000. In fact, we are now (as of this writing) at $1,070,885 which represents 116% of our overall goal. We thank each and every parishioner who has given/pledged to our campaign and we encourage those who haven t to give what their means will allow. Remember if our campaign reaches 120% then every dollar donated stays with the parish. Sacred Heart Giving Tree: As is tradition during the Advent Season the Giving Tree has been placed in the front of the Church. We remind our generous parishioners that if you take a gift request from the tree the item is to be tagged and wrapped and placed under the tree or brought to the Rectory no later than Sunday, December 16th. Reconciliation Monday: Just a reminder that we are currently in the season of Advent and Reconciliation Monday will be on Monday, December 17th. Confessions will be heard that day from 4 PM - 8PM. Advent Day of Reflection for Women: The Respect Life Office of The Archdiocese of New York will be holding a Day of Reflection for women on Saturday, December 22nd. It will be held at St. Vincent Ferrer Church in Manhattan at 869 Lexington Avenue from 9 am-3 PM. There is a $25 registration fee which includes lunch and can be paid at the door.the day s agenda will include Mass, Confessions, Meditation and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. For more information call (212) St. Joseph Retreat Center: Be The Light, Saturday, December 29th, 12-1:30 PM, $25 per person, facilitated by Louis Nunez. This program is specifically geared towards students and young adults. The day will focus on the passage from Isaiah which says The people in darkness have seen a great light. The darkness people feel both psychologically and spiritually will be explored. We will examine Jesus, as the light of the world and we will look at what we can do to be a light in our own world, life and other s lives.

4 Sacred Heart Parish Groups Bible Study: Fr. Eric has a weekly Bible study group which meets on Saturdays from 1-2:30 PM in the school s small cafeteria. During the hour The Rosary is recited, Father gives a short bible lecture and there is a brief group discussion. All are welcome to attend. Altar Servers: We are always looking for new boys and girls to become altar servers. If you are in the fifth grade or older, are a practicing Catholic and have received your first Holy Communion you can join. If anyone is interested please contact the Rectory at (718) or simply ask Fr. Eric after Mass. Being a server not only increases one s spiritual experience at Mass but also is a great way to get involved in the parish. Sacred Heart Youth Group: Sacred Heart currently has a Youth Group for children in grades If your child is interested in joining or if you have any questions contact Maria Montouri at (347) The group meets every first and third Monday of the month in the school cafeteria at 7 PM. The Youth Group would like to thank everyone who contributed to their food drive last Sunday at Stop and Shop. They collected a massive amount of food that will go along way to feed the needy and hungry of our parish. Legion of Mary: The Sacred Heart chapter of the Legion of Mary meets weekly (if possible) on Wednesday at 6:30 PM in the rectory. The meeting lasts roughly one hour and the members pray the Rosary and offer assistance to the Pastor. If you are interested please call Patti Foley at All are welcome. Sacred Heart Scouts: Pack and Troop 74 for grades K-10 for ALL children meets on Mondays at 7 PM in the school cafeteria, open registration. Holy Name: The Holy Name Society is one of the oldest and most traditional groups of the Church. All men of the parish ages 18 and older can attend. The next Holy Name Meeting is scheduled for Sunday, January 6th in the Rectory basement after the 9 AM Mass. All men of the parish are encouraged to attend. Topics of discussion will include The Right to Life March in January as well as Planning the calendar of events for the coming year ahead. Corona House Thank You: The members of our Holy Name Society as well as The men of the Corona House express their most heartfelt thanks for the donations given this past weekend. Through our assistance the residents there can continue on their path of turning a negative situation into a positive one. All the residents there are grateful for the toiletries that were donated and the overwhelming show of support for their struggles. Mom Friends Club: A new club is forming at Sacred Heart called The Mom Friends Club. Mothers with small children are invited to attend. The gatherings will feature activities for children such as arts and crafts and socializing for the moms. The first meeting of this group is Saturday, November 3rd in the Rectory basement meeting room from 1-3 PM. Parking is available in the rectory parking lot. We can also follow The Mom Friends Group on social media. Sacred Heart RCIA: Have you or anyone you know expressed an interest in becoming a Catholic? Were you baptized a Catholic but never received the sacraments of Communion and Confirmation. We offer the opportunity for people to come together in small groups to learn more about The Catholic Faith. These sessions center on the teachings and experiences of the Gospels and the Church while preparing individuals to celebrate the sacraments of Baptism, Communion and Confirmation. Candidates will make their sacraments at Sacred Heart during the Easter season. Call the rectory at (718) if you or someone you know is interested in more details. Sacred Heart Choir: The Adult Choir sings weekly at the 11 AM Mass on Sunday. Rehearsals take place at 10:30 AM in the choir loft. If any new members who can carry a tune wish to join they do so by simply showing up. Being a member of the choir is a great way to enhance your spiritual experience at Mass. Remember he who sings prays twice!
