2 NOTE FROM THE PASTOR Dear Parishioners, On May 13, 1981, after Pope John Paul II was shot in St. Peter s Square in Rome by a would-be assassin, the pope-mobile fled the scene and John Paul was transferred to an ambulance. His personal secretary, Monsignor Dziwisz, climbed beside him and heard him praying, O Maria, Madonna! Maria, Madonna! (Oh Mary, my Mother). Yesterday, September 8, the universal Church celebrated the birthday of our Queen as we commemorated the nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Each of the faithful can and should say, Oh Mary, my Mother. Mary leads us to Christ. The Church has taught that for a very long time. At the wedding of Cana the wine ran short. It was a painful crisis for a newly-wed couple entertaining their entire village celebrating their nuptials in a festival that would last for several days. Fortunately, for the couple, Mary was there. She coaxed her Son into performing His first public miracle, even though, at first, he seemed to protest: Woman, how does your concern affect Me? My hour has not yet come. (John 2:4). Nevertheless, the water was turned into wine after Our Lady told the servants: Do whatever He tells you. (V. 5). Our heavenly Mother helps us to do whatever Jesus tells us. What follows? Our water is turned into wine. Mary helps us to say yes to Jesus, and to His commandments. She helps us to accept His Providence in our lives. We know, from experience, that, at times, this is not so easy. Christ is a loving and caring God, but He is also demanding. He sometimes allows some real roughness to rain upon us but He never leaves us to carry the burden alone. He takes us very seriously and He expects much from us, because He has given us so much. Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more. (Luke 12:48). Mary helps us to obey the will of the Lord. While it is true to say that Mary leads us to Christ, it is also true to say that Christ leads us to Mary. In the heart of Mary, God the Father s deep desire is fulfilled. The Father wanted to have at least one person to love Jesus the way He deserves to be loved. The Immaculate Heart of Mary achieves this divine aspiration. Before any one else in history entrusted him- or herself to Our Lady, it was God the Father who did so first. He gave His only Son (with whom He is One) to her in the mystery of the Incarnation. Our Lady is able to communicate to us, her children, a portion of her perfect love for Jesus. As at Cana, she helps us to navigate our difficulties and reach out to Christ for solutions. He wants us to honor His Mother. He wants us to pray the Rosary every day. He wants her to serve as our interior spiritual director so that we can fulfill our callings in this world and be happy in Christ s eternal kingdom forever.. God bless you! Father Eric

3 Sacred Heart : If you and your spouse are considering a Private/Catholic school for your children, Sacred Heart is the perfect choice. Sacred Heart School is a West Brighton fixture with a rich history of academic and athletic success. The school currently has an enrollment of 278 students all of whom are inspired and educated in the image of God. One hundred percent of our 8th grade graduates are accepted into their high school of choice. Many of our students are awarded high school scholarships, are accepted into advanced/ specialized programs and our school has among the highest ELA and Math scores on Staten Island. We place emphasis on technology in the classrooms as our kindergarten eighth grade students have Chromebooks in the classroom. Homework assignments, upcoming events and school news are posted on our school website. Also our basketball, soccer, swimming and golf teams are not only competitive, they win! Sacred Heart also has a Junior National Honor Society as well as drama, art and chess clubs. In addition, we offer a free Pre-K and financial assistance is available to students from K-8th grade. Crossroads Foundation Fashion Show: The Crossroads Foundation will be having its 25th annual fashion show on Thursday October 4th at 7PM at The Hilton Garden Inn. In fact, we are now (as of this writing) at $1,060,885 which represents 115% of our overall goal. We thank each and every parishioner who has given/pledged to our campaign and we encourage those who haven t to give what their means will allow. Remember if our campaign reaches 120 % then every dollar donated stays with the parish. CCD Registration: CCD Registration for is going on now, re registrants are to send in forms as soon as possible. New registrations come to the rectory and pick up/drop off forms. Classes will begin on Wednesday, September 12th with grades 1-5 from 3:30-5 PM and grades 6-8 from 5:30-7 PM. Confirmation Meeting: Monday Sept 17th, 7 PM, school auditorium. Communion Meeting: Monday, Sept 24th, 7 PM, auditorium. Mission Appeal September 8 & 9th: This weekend September 8 & 9th Father David Adiletta will be preaching at all the Masses as part of this year s Mission Cooperative Plan. Fr. David, a Dominican Friar served in East Africa for nine years. There the Friars are engaged evangelization of poor and impoverished regions. The faith is new in this area so every donation counts and is greatly appreciated by those serving in these countries. Sacred Heart RCIA: Have you or anyone you know expressed an interest in becoming a Catholic? Were you baptized a Catholic but never received the sacraments of Communion and Confirmation? We offer the opportunity for people to come together in small groups to learn more about the Catholic Faith. These sessions center on the teachings and experiences of the Gospels and the Church while preparing individuals to celebrate the sacraments of baptism, communion and confirmation. Candidates will make their sacraments at Sacred Heart during the Easter season. Call the rectory at (718) if you or someone you know is interested for more details.

4 Sacred Heart Parish Groups Bible Study: Our Pastor, Fr. Eric, has a weekly Bible study group which meets on Saturdays from 1-2 PM in the school s small cafeteria. During the hour The Rosary is recited, Father gives a short bible lecture and there is a brief group discussion. All parishioners are welcome to attend. Altar Servers: We are always looking for new boys and girls to become altar servers. If you are in the fifth grade or older, are a practicing Catholic and have received your first Holy Communion you can join. If anyone is interested please contact the Rectory at (718) or simply ask Fr. Eric after Mass. Being a server not only increases one s spiritual experience at Mass but also is a great way to get involved in the parish. Sacred Heart Youth Group: Sacred Heart currently has a Youth Group for children in grades If your child is interested in joining or if you have any questions contact Maria Montouri at (347) The group meets every first and third Monday of the month in the school cafeteria at 7 PM. There is free pizza, drinks and snacks for all who attend the meetings. The group does service projects like clothing and coat drives, eyeglass drives and bake sales. There are fun social activities like movie nights, bowling and laser tag! Legion of Mary: The Sacred Heart chapter of the Legion of Mary meets weekly (if possible) on Wednesday at 6:30 PM in the rectory. The meeting lasts roughly one hour and the members pray the Rosary and offer assistance to the Pastor. If you are interested please call Patti Foley at All are welcome. Thanks to all who support the Legion of Mary. Sacred Heart Scouts: Pack and Troop 74 for grades K-10 for ALL children meets on Mondays at 7 PM in the school cafeteria, open registration. Holy Name: The Holy Name Society is one of the oldest and most traditional groups of the Church. We are excited to be bringing it back to Sacred Heart. All men of the parish ages 18 and older can join. The next meeting will take place on Sunday, September 9th at 6:30 PM in the small cafeteria. Communion Breakfast 2018: The Holy Name is pleased to announce the return of the Sacred Heart Communion Breakfast which will take place on Sunday, September 23rd, from 10:30-1 PM at The Staaten. The cost is $20 per adult and $10 for children under 13. Jim Engles a Sacred Heart Graduate and the current coach of The Columbia Men s Basketball Team will be the guest speaker. We are excited about the return of this annual event which helps launch our school year. The last weekend to purchase tickets will be September 16th. Sacred Heart Soccer : Sacred Heart Soccer Club registration is now currently open for the season. For more information or details contact Marilyn Corson at Sacred Heart Cross Country Track: When school resumes The Sacred Heart Cross Country Track Team will have their practices at Royal Oak (in Clove Lake Park ) on Mondays at 6:30 PM. Boys and Girls from kindergarten through eighth grade can join, the fee is $50 with shirt or $40 if shirt has been purchased. Our Lady of Pity, Eve of Solemn Remembrance: The 17th annual Eve of Solemn Remembrance will take place at Our Lady of Pity on Monday, September 10th at 7:30 PM. Bishop John J. O Hara will be the main celebrant, a list of the victim s names will be read and there will be candlelight reflection. Sacred Music by Maura Molloy starts at 7 PM.
