2 FULL FAITH BY DEACON JOHN ERDAG, DIRECTOR OF PARISH LIFE He was amazed at their lack of faith. Mark 6:6 Last week s Gospel was all about great faith in Jesus that healed the sick woman and Jairus daughter. This week s Gospel is the opposite; the people of Jesus home town not having any faith in Him. Both of these Scripture accounts were extreme; full faith in Jesus, and absolutely no faith in Jesus. And they showed how He works in us, or doesn t work in us, through the amount of faith we have in Him. I think many Catholics lie more in the middle. They believe in Jesus. They believe He s God. They have faith that He loves them and can provide for them. But there s something holding them back from being all in. It s as if they ll only allow so much supernatural to take over their complete awareness of the physical. They want to have faith, but they re not quite all the way convinced. And it results in a kind of uncertain approach to who God is in their lives. Are you one of those Catholics? Full faith in God brings out a lifestyle. It doesn t allow us to compartmentalize God; to bring Him out only on Sunday morning and then put Him away after Mass. Full faith allows us to live with God continuously in our consciousness. We know He s there with us. We re aware of Him. We look to Him. We talk with Him. We act for Him. He may not be physical, but He is a tangible presence in our every waking hour. That s full faith. But full faith isn t like a light switch that we can just click on. We can t say, I want to have faith and, voila, it magically appears. We have to build it. It starts with a desire for more Christ within us. The more we bring Him into our daily lives, we discover how joyful life really is. Life stops being about what we have to do for Christ, and instead becomes about the joy we feel in doing it. We stop needing physical proof to motivate our faith because finding joy through Him is proof enough. We discover that having faith in Jesus brings a bigger meaning to life which helps us find peace. God graces us with that knowledge through our faith in Him. Then we grow it. And there s many ways to build a deeper life with Him. Maintain your prayer life, always asking God to make your faith stronger. Come to Mass with genuine excitement, knowing that He will be there with you. At Mass, don t let anything distract you from the Eucharist, but instead concentrate even stronger on Him. If you find your faith being strengthened through reading or lectures or movies or lyrics, keep using them. Stay true to the activities that lead you to Him. And have patience. Build your faith around the certainty that it will thrive; don t resist it, but always be aware of it. Then as you recognize it, let it keep growing. Full faith in Jesus is the only way we can find His peace and joy. Full faith helps us to believe that God cares for us, watches over us, and answers our prayers. There is no limit to what God can do when we have faith in Him. 2

4 DIVINE MERCY Through this new bulletin column, Ministry of the Week, we will showcase one SJN Ministry each week to bring awareness to all of the good works of Stewardship that our parish supports and to encourage people of our community to join in. This week, we are highlighting the Divine Mercy ministry. The Divine Mercy is not just a prayer devotional, it s about God s love and compassion to us. Praying the devotion to the Divine Mercy brings us closer to God and helps us to a deeper living of the message of Divine Mercy. Through it, we are called into an understanding that God s love is unlimited and available to everyone even the greatest sinners. The Divine Mercy ministry here at SJN is dedicated to sharing the message of God s love through the Divine Mercy devotion. Members gather together to pray the chaplet. In awareness of being merciful to others, they visit the sick and elderly, they pray outside abortion clinics and help educate the parish about God s loving mercy to us all. We ask you to prayerfully consider joining this ministry. Forgiveness will unleash a power in your life that is underrated and often ignored. It is underrated mainly because it is underused. We fail to capture the power of forgiveness because we are afraid of it, because we have grown comfortable in our familiar wounds, or because we are sinfully stubborn. But the power is there waiting for us. This little book, and the twelve real-life stories in it, will help you capture the power of forgiveness in your life. 5 FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 8, 2018 THANK YOU I'd like to extend my deepest thanks for all of the prayers and donations that our parish gave in the past year for the 17 teens attended Life Teen Summer Camp in Big Bear, CA. Because of your generosity, the teens of our parish dove into the theme of "Relentless Father" based on Psalm 26:4, "Goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life". Everyday, they got to experience community, adventure (high ropes, hikes, lake time), games, bible studies, daily mass, confession, and eucharistic adoration. They were able to wrestle with some of the toughest questions in our faith (why is God silent, why is there suffering in the world), and ultimately experience the love of our Relentless Father. They came back stronger in their faith, ready to dive in and become disciples. Again, thank you to the whole St John Neumann community for making this possible!
