I had been assigned to Mod P; the cell block that was downstairs and furthest to the back of the facility. This was their most secure cell block and was where they housed the more dangerous inmates. Because of security concerns, my Communion Services usually only served two or three at a me. But that fit more into my ministry because with the smaller group, I also got the opportunity to talk with them in a pastoral care way. Marco came in one day, and I could tell right away he was a bad guy. He was the only one sent to the room that day; apparently, he didn t get along well with the other inmates so nobody wanted to join him at the Communion Service. He appeared to be very angry, and for the first me since I had started that ministry, I was in midated by an inmate. He wasn t hos le, but he certainly wasn t happy at all. He also wasn t Catholic, so I didn t start the Communion Service. Instead, I pulled up a chair and we talked. He told me that he was what the inmates called a for life. He had been found guilty of murder and was at Theo Lacy awai ng his sentencing which, because of some gang related circumstances, he would either be incarcerated for life without possibility of parole or receive the death penalty. He said he was mad at God for pu ng him in jail fully knowing that he would never get out. He wanted to see me that day to let the religious dude know that God was a phony. God didn t care about him. Of course, my knee jerk reac on was to say that God didn t get him into the trouble that landed him in jail, he got himself into it. But I held back from saying that. Instead I asked him that if God had put Him there, God must have had a good purpose for it. I told him that he could either be angry and useless for the rest of his life, or figure out what God wanted from him. I helped him to see that God is love and maybe, just maybe, God was using him as an example to show the other inmates who weren t in for life what his experience brought to him. To talk with those other guys, to tell them to not go down the same path that he had. I told him that he could either keep walking around there like a bad guy for the rest of his life with his back turned to God, or he could answer God s call and spend the rest of his life helping others. I m not kidding, you could see the lightbulb go on in his head and he immediately calmed down. He said he understood what I was saying and that he d really have to think about it. For li le by li le and very soon the divine calm and peace with a wondrous, sublime knowledge of God, enveloped in divine love, will be infused into their souls. GRIEF SUPPORT Tuesday, October 23 The Grief Support Group meets weekly at 9:30AM on Tuesday mornings. For more informa on contact Jane Roschmann when he said no, I promised to get him one. Then we prayed together. Because I only get two at a me, it s very rare for me to ever see the same guys again. But believe it or not, the next me I was there, Marco came up again. This me he was with his celly who was a Chris an. He told me that his celly was helping him get to know God be er. He also told me that in the one hour each day that they got out of their cells, he would talk with the other inmates. He wanted to help them to not do the same stupid things that he did. I never did find out if Marco was sentenced to death. Or if he kept up with his mission when he got transferred to a peniten ary. And I ll never know. But he s a permanent fixture on my personal prayer list. I know that his crimes were heinous. But I also saw a transforma on in a bad guy; a coming to God, that probably wouldn t have happened if he was handed death. I pray that God keeps using him. And I think of all the other bad guys in prison and the really awful crimes they commi ed. I pray for their vic ms. But I also pray that God touches their hearts like Marco. Am I being naïve? Maybe. Some guys won t change. But they shouldn t be sentenced to death. Every life has value. And even with the worst criminals in the world, God can s ll use them. But that s up to Him to decide. 5 ANGEL TREE FOR ST. THERESA S ORPHANAGE Just as every year, we will begin collec ng Christmas presents for children of St. Teresa s Orphanage in Ensenada. The names of the children from St Teresa's Orphanage (Ensenada) will be on an angel tree in the courtyard behind the statue of The Virgin Mary on Saturday 10/20 a er the 5:00pm mass, and also a er all the masses on Sunday 10/21, un l the "angels" are gone. Names are usually gone a er the 10:30am mass, but this year we were given 150 names, so we may keep the angel tree open longer. If you want to take an "angel and buy a Christmas gi for that child (and wrap it), but will not be available that weekend, call Dianne Lundquist at (949) or her at diannelundquist2017@gmail.com. Deadline for gi s to be received back is Tuesday, November 20th. A brochure will be given out with the angels lis ng the drop off points for the gi s. The Christmas party for the children will be on December 8. Thanks to Sheila Tomlin for again sewing the Christmas stockings, and to the youth group for providing cookies/candy canes for the kids. 6 Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 21, 2018 LIVING AS STEWARDS Our readings today are wonderfully consoling and wildly challenging. If we take them to heart, they just might change our lives. For they should call us to profound gra tude for all that God has done for us and inspire us to live lives of thanksgiving and obedience to Him in response to His overwhelming love and mercy. In the Gospel Reading, from Mark, Jesus tells us in His own words how we can thank Him and how our lives can reflect greatness in His eyes we can imitate Him. He tells us, Whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many. Our God has ransomed our lives. In truth, this ransom means our lives are not our own but belong to God. We must do what He asks us to do with them. And He has told us clearly what to do serve others in love as we have been served in love by Him. This is why service for the Chris an Steward is not an add on to our already busy lives. It is our life. Over the course of the next week, take these readings to heart. Reflect on the remarkable love God has shown for you. Then look carefully at your daily life. Is it an imita on of the servant love of your Brother and Savior? What changes do you need to make, perhaps just in a tude, or perhaps to the trajectory of your life as a whole, to live in grateful service to the One who loves you so? FAB55 MEETING CHOOSING THE RIGHT MEDICARE DRUG PLAN On Wednesday, November 7th will be the next mee ng of the FAB55 Ministry. We will have a guest speaker (Jeff White) that will discuss strategies to minimize your prescrip on drug costs by looking at various insurance companies and their plans.
