2 BE FORGIVING & BE FORGIVEN By John Erdag, Director of Parish Life Forgive your neighbor s injustice; then when you pray, your own sins will be forgiven. Sirach 28:2 When I was much more athletic, I used to play in a men s soccer league. Whenever we played, if one of our teammates got fouled, it was up to us other players to foul the other team. It seemed right. We were standing up for our team and getting even for the grave injustice that was brought upon us. It didn t matter if the referees judged the foul or not, it was our right to get our own payback. Don t get mad, get even. Doesn t it seem like that s the prevailing way of life anymore? And it s not just in sports, it s everywhere in our culture. Ever see an action movie? They re all the same. The hero is minding his own business doing good, when suddenly, the villain strikes against him or his family or his dog or whatever. A lot of bullets, screaming car chases, loud explosions, and the grand finale face off ends in the villain s demise. We cheer for the hero, pleased that he s received his vengeance, and we walk away from the theater feeling good. It s human nature. We see fairness in it and we call it justice. So, it makes today s readings about forgiveness all the more difficult for us to receive. Our society doesn t value forgiveness. In fact, forgiveness is often seen as a weakness, not a strength. But in today s Gospel, Jesus commands us to forgive; truly forgive from our hearts. Why? Well, one big reason is love. If we sincerely love each other (as we re commanded to) it doesn t make sense to want to hurt another, even when they ve hurt us. Can you imagine purposely getting back at your spouse every time you think you ve been hurt? Of course not. Out of love, you forgive and work things out. Now, expand that feeling to the world. Forgive and work things out. Also, forgiveness is liberating. We are not condoning or dismissing the bad behavior that s been done to us. There are many things that are done to us that are very difficult for us to accept. We certainly aren t always able to reconcile with it all. But forgiveness isn t about dismissal or forgetting. Instead forgiveness is about us surrendering our right to get even. It s about putting the judgement of the injustice into the hands of God and allowing ourselves to be free of it. Give away the pain. Because when we have forgiven and are no longer dwelling upon vengeance, we are able to heal from the hurt. Most importantly, though, we must forgive because we ve been forgiven. Contrary to what we may think, there isn t a day that goes by without us committing a sin. It may not be a grave offense, but we certainly fall way short of God s standards. Every day, we hurt God. Yet He always forgives us. Always. And if you go around believing that someone who s hurt you doesn t deserve forgiveness, then you must honestly ask yourself if you deserve forgiveness. When we think like that, we know we need to pray to God constantly, Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. If we re always asking God to forgive us, we should always look to forgive those who hurt us. And as Jesus says, forgive them from the heart. He knows that our generous forgiveness of others should be because we understand the forgiveness that God has extended to us. That s what the above verse from our first reading from Sirach means.
