2 TAKE A BREAK BY DEACON JOHN ERDAG, DIRECTOR OF PARISH LIFE He said to them, Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while. (Mark 6:30) I m not quite sure why this line in today s Gospel stood out more than the rest, but it really resonated with me. Doesn t it seem like we re always on the move? I was looking at my calendar the other day and there isn t one day in the next several weeks that I don t have something going on. It s not all work, some of the things are family events, but even still, I have to be somewhere and do something every day for a long time. Now I m not complaining, but when I read the Gospel, come away by yourself to a deserted place, I did get envious. We all need to recharge. That s what Jesus was telling his disciples. They had just returned from the various towns in the area where they had spent time helping and healing and spreading the word of God s kingdom. I m sure they were excited about their experiences, probably exhilarated and fired up for the Lord. But they had to be tired, too. Jesus recognized that and told them to get some rest. He understood that burnout happens when we re so busy ministering to others, that we don t take time to minister to ourselves. Summertime is the perfect time for good, relaxed spiritual refreshment. Spending more time outside, we can take the opportunity to really think about and appreciate God s creation. It s amazing to recognize His works all around us. During summertime, we gather often with family and friends. We should take those occasions to thank God for the rich and vast blessings of the loved ones that He has graced our lives with. And summertime is a great time to commit ourselves to getting to know Jesus and our Catholic faith better. Spend time reading the Bible, adopt daily meditation practices, build a stronger prayer life. Most importantly, keep attending Mass. When that alarm goes off on Sunday morning, don t hit the snooze button thinking, It s just another ordinary Sunday; God won t mind if I sleep in this one time. Just because we re in the Ordinary Time of our yearly calendar, it doesn t mean that the Mass is less Extraordinary. And it certainly isn t to be attended out of obligation. The Eucharist is always our best source of rejuvenation and spiritual care. And in the slower days of summer, we have the opportunity to better experience more fully the wonder and awe of our most blessed sacrament. So relax this summer. Slow down and take it easy. Work on refreshing your body and mind. You deserve it. But don t take a vacation from God. Instead, continue growing closer to Him and refresh your spirit, too. 4 SUMMER MISSIONARY APPEAL AUG. 4 /5 DIOCESE OF THANJAVUR INDIA The Diocese of Thanjavur (India) is located on the east coast of South India. It covers an area of 3687sq.miles with a population of 7 million people, of whom only 250, 000 are Catholics, and the rest are Hindus and Muslims. Being rural and agricultural, the diocese has a great financial burden in maintaining parishes and continuing the work of evangelization. Flood and drought are the common companions of the people. At present, the diocese manages numerous schools, boarding homes (orphanages) for children who have lost one or both of their parents, nursing homes, homes for the destitute, and one home for the mentally disabled run by the sisters of Blessed Mother Theresa of Kolkata.The diocese is proclaiming God s Good news to the poor, agricultural laborers and fishing communities. Missionary works include Catechetical training and Formation to lay Catholics from Villages and mission stations about church, bible, Sacraments and prayers. On receiving training, they will go back and teach in their places. People are poor and are unable to contribute much to the church. Diocese of Thanjavur runs 53 orphanages, the highest in all the dioceses of India. Orphans and semi orphan children of all religions, numbering about 2500 are living in the orphanages. They are fed, clothed and educated, all for free. More so orphans were added in the aftermath of Tsunami in 2004 in which many were orphaned and lost the family. Mission funds are also used to train priests and seminarians and to build chapels in the mission stations. The diocese receives a good number of vocations to priesthood and religious life. The diocese needs support to spend for their training and formation. The Diocese also cares for widows and the physically disabled; it provides shelter and dairy animals for the poor and it continues to care for the victims of the Tsunami. Given the situation in the Diocese of Thanjavur, we are in desperate need of your financial support. Please be generous and support the mission of the diocese of Thanjavur. Please keep the Catholics of Thanjavur in your prayers. On behalf of Bishop Devadass Ambrose, the diocese of Thanjavur, the priests and the people, I thank you and assure you of our prayers.
