3 First Reading: 1 Kings 17:17-24 The child of the mistress of the house where Elijah sojourned became ill and died. The woman pleaded with Elijah who took the son and prayed over him. When the child revived Elijah returned him to his mother who recognized Elijah as "a man of God." Second Reading: Galatians 1:11-19 Paul proclaims the gospel, not as human, but coming from the revelation of Jesus Christ. Paul continues to acknowledge his own sinfulness and call to grace. Gospel: Luke 7:11-17 JUNE 5 - TENTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME The gospel continues to recount the miracles and healing powers of Jesus. As Jesus neared the gates to the city of Nain, they came upon a deceased young man who was being carried out of the city. His mother, a widow, and a large crowd accompanying the body, met Jesus on the way. Compassionately, Jesus comforts the weeping mother and restores life to the dead man. Father s Day envelopes can be dropped into any collection basket or mailed to the rectory. A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS: HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time June 5, 2016 O Lord, my God, let the life breath return to the body of this child. The Lord heard the prayer of Elijah, the life breath returned to the child s body and he revived.the woman replied, now indeed I know that you are a man of God. The word of the Lord comes truly from your mouth. A great prophet has arisen in our midst and God has visited his people. We use many expressions related to our breathing. We run out of breath, we experience heavy breathing and sometimes when surprised lose our breath. CPR is employed to restore a normal breathing process. We read that Jesus breathed on the apostles, when He gave power to forgive sins. We recall a few weeks ago, the Spirit came upon the church at Pentecost. The first story of creation finds God offering His breath, the ruah Yahweh when God gave Adam his living soul. Today the Word of God reveals two widows, now suffering the loss of their sons. The compassion of the prophet and the concern of Jesus, restores life to the lifeless bodies. Both are returned to their mothers. Did you ever wonder how they related their experience to their mothers, like the popular book of our time. Jesus continues to restore life through the healing in the sacraments of reconciliation and the anointing of the sick. Both are viable signs of His mercy, offering health, strength and resistance to evil.

5 A New Parish Name St. Matthew s/our Lady of Perpetual Help/ St. Stanislaus Kostka is the current name of our parish. It is too long, for verbal or written communications, and financial accounts. We will have an opportunity to have a new name for our new parish once the merge is legally complete in September. Until that time the parishes are still three separate corporations with their own books, Federal ID number, checking accounts etc. It will simplify things immensely when we merge the three into one entity. This will also give us an opportunity to simplify the name of our new parish. THE NAMING PROCESS: The process will begin THIS weekend, June 4th/5th, by having each parishioner submit their suggestions. You can submit your ideas by to VOTE@STMOLPH.COM by doing the SURVEY (QR Code provided above) on our webpage or by RETURNING THE BALLOT below. Voting will end on June 14th. The weekend of June 18th/19th, a list of all the suggested names will be published in the bulletin. A separate list of the top 9 names will be listed. You will then vote for your top three (3) choices, by , survey or ballot. Voting will end on July 5th. Then, the weekend of July 9th/10th, the final three names will be published in the bulletin. We will submit the three names to Cardinal Dolan who will select one as our new name, probably after the legal merge. Please take time to think about a name that will appeal to ALL of the parishioners, not just one segment of the parish. If you are away on vacation during this process you can keep abreast and vote through our web page. Let us all pray that the Holy Spirit will guide us through this process. 6 Altar Server trip to Playland All those altar servers who have served this past year are invited to a trip to Playland. It will be either Thursday, June 23 rd or Friday, June 24 th. If you are interested, please or contact the rectory office by Tuesday June 14 th with your preference of dates. As we get closer you will be notified which date and given more information. Transportation and rides are included but you will need to bring/buy your lunch. Office of the Cardinal 1011 First Avenue New York, NY June 5, 2016 Year of Mercy Dear Friends in the Lord, When we are told that the Lord calls each of us to be co-missionaries and co-evangelizers of the Church, as was Saint Paul and the other apostles, we do not often realize how much mission work there is to be done in the United States. There is far more than you or I could ever imagine. The annual National Black and Indian Mission Collection, taken up in parishes across the nation, enables the Church in the United States to provide desperately required pastoral, educational and spiritual assistance to some of the neediest of our brothers and sisters in the Lord. From the inner-cities of the rural south to the deserts of the southwest to the wilderness of Alaska, grants from the annual appeal make it possible for the Church to assist our Black and Indian Catholic communities. Here in the Archdiocese, we receive grants twice per year that are applied to Black parishes in Harlem and the Bronx, making it possible for them to serve their parishioners much more than they could on their own. With this letter, I invite you to be as generous as you possibly can be in making a sacrificial offering to this crucially important and necessary ministry of the Church. The St. Stanislaus Kostka Society welcomes all parishioners to join them.
