2 St. Patrick Parish Purpose Purpose of This Leadership Gathering Thank you, the parish leadership, for doing what you do and for keeping the parish running. Communicate and put definition to the direction of the parish. Ensure that leadership understands the roles of Parish Council and Finance Council and where they plug in. Gain an understanding of upcoming events to advance the parish.

4 St. Patrick Parish Vision of the Future One Heart, One Mind Christ is at the center of all we do. Our Baptism & Confirmation unite us as children of God. We are the Body of Christ in the Eucharist, forever bringing us together and closer to Jesus. We are each uniquely called and gifted by God to do His will in the world. God has provided us with everything we need as a parish to do what it is He wants us to do. As leaders of the Parish and as Disciples of Jesus Christ, we work as one to love and serve the Lord, each other, and the community. We are guided by the Holy Spirit through prayer and discernment.

8 St. Patrick Parish Moving Forward 5 Year Look Back Meanwhile from 2009 to The City of Washington's population remained relatively flat 15,246 to 15,100 Registered parish households decreased 121 from 1,120 to 999 The number of registered parishioners decreased 479 from 3,457 to 2,978 Number of children in St. Patrick School remained relatively flat from 304 to 299 Number of children in St. Patrick CCD decreased from 225 to 168 Average Sunday Mass attendance decreased from 1,450 to 1,171 Annual parish budget increased from $1.7M to $2.0M Weekly collections have declined from $20K to $18K on average

I can't get direction from anyone... It's the same people that do everything... I can't make a difference... New ideas go nowhere, it's just about the way we've always done things... All you have to do is run to Father to get your way... We are not a welcoming community...

11 St. Patrick Parish Moving Forward Truths That Stand God has a plan for us individual, parish, community, world. We are each invited to be Disciples of Jesus Christ. The Laity are called and gifted and have a significant role in parish life and in the Universal Church. The Parish is a place of formation, allowing us to learn, live, and share our Catholic faith with the world. The Holy Spirit is always here, always close, always there to guide us.

12 St. Patrick Parish Moving Forward Culture Eats Strategy For Lunch - Then Let's Get the Culture Right! We are a Catholic faith community We act with One Heart, One Mind, starting right now! We ensure that Christ is the focus and at the center of all we do We exemplify the following characteristics as leaders: Humility, Service Community, Fellowship, Solidarity Leadership, Wisdom, Knowledge We foster an environment of collaboration, trust, dialogue, and consensus no winners or losers, no power plays, no personal agendas, no silos We discern and pray as the primary vehicles for engagement, decision making, recommendations, and actions We become a Church of Mercy - lead by Pope Francis, guided by the Holy Spirit!

13 St. Patrick Parish Moving Forward Moving Forward We will establish active parish leadership beginning with the Pastor and extending to the Parish Council and Finance Council. We will engage and collaborate with parish leaders, chairpersons, key staff, and other parishes, to understand where we are, what we need, what others do well, and where we need to go. Through discernment, we will pray and ask the Holy Spirit to guide us. We will embrace and build on the vision from Father Steve of One Heart, One Mind, ensuring that all parish organizations and ministries have clear understanding of their role in the parish, that Christ is at the center of all we do, and to gain a broader understanding of how we all work together to accomplish the parish's mission and God's plan.

14 St. Patrick Parish Moving Forward Moving Forward We will look to Scripture, Church teaching, and Catholic authors like Matthew Kelly of Dynamic Catholic and Sherry Waddell of the Catherine of Sienna Institute. We will use the book by Pope Francis entitled Church of Mercy to form, enlighten, educate, and guide us. In line with Bishop Jenky's goal to increase the vibrancy of parish life, we will organize the Parish around Sacrament Life, Evangelization/Catechesis & Schools, Stewardship & Justice, and Administration & Planning. We will promote a welcoming culture and passionately seek to find ways to get more and more Catholics engaged in parish life. We will act as a mission focused parish, externally focused, serving the needs of each other and of our community. We will establish key measurements and processes to track progress and continuously improve.

17 The Church of Mercy Ask that all parish leadership read this book Read it from a personal perspective, as an active volunteer in the parish, and as a parish leader Read it as a Catholic to better understand and get to know Pope Francis Then, we'll meet again on April 22nd to collaborate and discuss what the Pope is saying We can use the Pope's teachings to inform us, guide us, and help us in discovering God's plan for our parish

31 St. Patrick Parish Parish Council Administration & Planning The administration subcommittee works closely with the pastor regarding such things as needed personnel, personnel policies, policies for building use, etc. and often has a liaison to the Finance Council. The planning subcommittee oversees parish planning and implementation of the plans and represents the parish in developing on-going cluster plans and the implementation and evaluation of those plans. 32 St. Patrick Parish Parish Council Evangelization, Catechesis, & Schools (Learn Our Faith) The role of this committee is to develop within the parish awareness of the critical role evangelization plays in the parish and to educate the parish to the meaning of evangelization from a Catholic perspective. The committee is also charged with overseeing programs and processes related to life-long catechesis. This committee is advisory to the educational-formational administrators in the design, implementation and evaluation of the total Christian educational/formation programs in the parish, which include: sacramental preparation, adult and family ministry, youth ministry and child catechetical ministry, as well as the Catholic School. 33 St. Patrick Parish Parish Council Sacramental Life (Live Our Faith) This committee nourishes and supports the liturgical and devotional aspects of parish life, especially the Eucharist. It provides opportunities for parishioners to deepen their faith through a variety of prayer experiences and liturgical celebrations. The committee identifies the spiritual needs of parishioners and maintains an on-going program of education and training for liturgical ministers. 34 St. Patrick Parish Parish Council Stewardship & Justice (Share Our Faith) This committee promotes stewardship as a way of life and discerns needs of persons in the parish and wider community, especially people who are poor or in need of some service or connection to others, and identifies resources to meet those needs enlisting the active cooperation of parish members. This committee fulfills the justice dimensions of scripture and our Church tradition acknowledging that every Christian is called to service and to work for justice, including Respect Life efforts. The committee s scope of responsibility is three-fold: 1) promote stewardship as a way of life 2) to meet immediate needs of the community and beyond 3) to work for changes in the structures of society, which are oppressive.
