The Order For Morning Worship 15 th Sunday in Ordinary Time July 16, 2017 Ten-Thirty O Clock *At these moments, we invite you to stand in body or spirit. Please silence all electronic devices prior to the service. ASSEMBLE IN GOD S NAME Welcome & Worship Notes Call to Worship Leader: Your word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. Psalm 119:105, 111 People: Your word is our heritage forever, the joy of our hearts. Preparation for Worship: Worship today begins with an invitation from the Psalms, expressed in our opening hymn #386. Psalm 95, often called Venite from its first word in Latin, has long served as an opening canticle in the worship of Western Christianity. John Calvin found here two reasons to praise God: for sustaining the created world and for adopting the church into a gracious relationship. *Hymn in Procession No. 386 Come, Worship God *Prayer of Adoration (in unison) Author of Life, Living Word, Holy Breath, Psalm 119:105 we have stumbled through the week and groped our way back to this place. Illumine the steps before us and write your word on our hearts, for we carry the name of Jesus and would walk in the light of his love. Amen.

Call to Confession The Scriptures are shot through with stories of people just like us: Genesis 25:19-34 men who grieved, women who questioned, siblings who did not get along, parents who chose favorites. There is no need for pretense in this place. Let us go to God in prayer. Prayer of Confession (in unison) Patient and persistent God, Matthew 13:1-9, we come, polished and presentable, to this comfortable room as if we knew what to expect, as if this were a safe predictable place, as if we could simply observe. Holy One, forgive our tepid expectations. In the mystery of your love, overshadow us. Plant the seeds of your gospel in each of our hearts until we bloom and spill with your passion to serve in a world that is wasting. Amen. (Silence is observed for personal reflection.) Kyrie Hymn No. 579 (sung by all in English) Lord, Have Mercy (please stand in body or spirit) *Assurance of Pardon Leader: There is therefore now no condemnation Romans 8:1 for those who are in Christ Jesus. The Spirit of God dwells in you. If you hear nothing else today, hear these words: People: there is no condemnation. In the name of Jesus, I am forgiven. *Response to the Assurance of Pardon Hymn No. 581 Glory Be to the Father Children are now invited to walk to the chancel steps for the Message. LISTEN FOR GOD S WORD READ AND PROCLAIMED Message for Children Children come forward for the Children s Message. After the prayer, children in Kindergarten 7th grade may go to the Chapel for Kids Church and children ages 3 5 may go downstairs for Kids Church. All children are to be picked up in the lower level.

Prayer for Illumination Hymn No. 453 (sung by all) 1. Open your ears, O faithful people; open your ears and hear God s word. Open your hearts, O royal priesthood; God has come to you. YISRAEL V ORAITA Refrain: God has spoken to the people, hallelujah! God has spoken words of wisdom, hallelujah! God has spoken to the people, hallelujah! God has spoken words of wisdom, hallelujah! 2. They who have ears to hear the message, they who have ears, now let them hear; they who would learn the way of wisdom, let them hear God s word. (Refrain) Hebrew Scripture Genesis 25:19-34 The Birth and Youth of Esau and Jacob Leader: The Word of the Lord. Pew Bible page 19 People: Thanks be to God. Large print Pew Bible pages Psalter Psalm 119: Pew Bible pages All join the choir in singing the refrain: Iona Community Epistle Reading Romans 8:1-11 Life in the Spirit Leader: The Word of the Lord. Pew Bible pages People: Thanks be to God. Large print Pew Bible page 191

*Hymn No. 12 Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise Gospel Reading Matthew 13:1-9, The Parable of the Sower Leader: The Gospel of the Lord. Pew Bible page 794 People: Thanks be to God. Large print Pew Bible pages Sermon Brotherly Loathing Rev. Michael Wallace Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples born of you shall be divided; the one shall be stronger than the other, the elder shall serve the younger. OUR RESPONSE TO THE WORD *Affirmation of Faith The Apostles Creed: page 35 Prayers of the People and the Lord s Prayer Offertory Anthem The Acceptable Year Alfred V. Fedak The Spirit of the Lord is upon me because He has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to preach the acceptable year, the year of the Lord. To give to them that mourn a garland for ashes, the oil of gladness instead of the their tears, the garment of praise for their spirit of heaviness, that they may be called mighty oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He might be glorified. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me because He has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor. This day, in your midst are these words fulfilled. From Isaiah 61 and Luke 4 *Doxology Hymn No. 606 OLD HUNDREDTH *Prayer of Dedication (unison) Giver of life, Matthew 13:1-9, as the sower casts seeds abundantly, hopefully, so we long to participate in your seeding of the world. Receive these gifts as tokens of our lives. Send your cultivating Spirit to work among us until we yield and grow in grace, for we pray in the name of Jesus, who came out of love for the world. Amen.

REENTRY INTO THE WORLD TO SERVE THE LORD Being Christ s Church Living Our Faith (Please sign the Friendship Pad found in your pew and return it toward the center aisle, noting names of those with whom you are worshiping.) *Hymn in Procession No. 550 Give Praise to the Lord *Benediction Choral Response Henry Purcell The peace of God which passes all understanding shall keep your hearts and minds through Jesus Christ our Lord. *Organ Voluntary Toccata in F Major (BWV #540) Johann Sebastian Bach The chase is on one hanging on the heal of the other! Twin brothers: one born only two measures (6 beats) after the first that is, the right hand voice in the soprano leads the exact canon ( round ) ahead of the left hand voice in the tenor. But then, the energetic pedal solo interrupts the competition. In the next episode, the twin brothers reverse their roles: the tenor voice leads the canon as the soprano voice follows 6 beats later with the precise copy of the same notes. Who will win the blessing of the booming bass voice which follows? Then they all contend in harmonic sequence for several generations, modulating to many regions of the various tonal centers around the musical spectrum. How does Bach bring this struggle to a conclusion? *Greeting One Another For anyone wishing confidential individual prayer, immediately following the service a member of the Stephen Ministry will be available in the Chapel. AT REST: B. Rebecca Raisner July 8, 2017 The flowers in the Chancel vases are given in loving memory of J. Clark Bailey by his Family. The flowers in the Pedestal vases are given in honor of Miriam Carter by her children and nieces and nephews who join her in worship today. The Cathedral Hour today is made possible through the generous donations from members and friends of Christ Presbyterian Church. Liturgist: Rachel Shaffer

This is for members and non-members, children, and adults. Everyone who sits in the pew or walks in the door is invited to sign up. Wouldn t it be good to feel you knew more of the people with whom you worship? We are going to join together for a September dinner in small groups. That s it food! All you have to do is sign up at the Kiosk or on line by August 6th. You decide if you want a group to dine out or to eat a potluck dinner at someone s house. You decide if you wish to be in a group that has children or not. The only agenda for these dinners is to meet new people and strengthen our communal fellowship. Groups of eight will be randomly created from the information you check. Your group will decide on the date and the details. We will come together with open minds and hearts in Christ to share in each other s company. We will repeat the process all over again from sign up to selection in October and November!
