1 EMMANUEL LUTHERAN CHURCH PO Box 116 ~ 12th & Pestalozzi Streets Tell City, IN Website: tellcitylutheran.org emmanuel@psci.net Pastor Gadbaw Home Phone: Pastor Gadbaw pastorgadbaw@gmail.com SUNDAY SCHOOL & ADULT BIBLE STUDY 8:45 AM DIVINE WORSHIP 10:00 AM HOLY COMMUNION 1 st and 3 rd SUNDAYS VISION STATEMENT... The Mission of Emmanuel Lutheran Church is to be a mission-station to equip the diverse people in our area with the love and power of Jesus. SEPTEMBER 2018 Well Summer is almost over and Autumn is about to begin! Are you excited to see the trees turn color and bring about the beautiful palettes of God's design? This of course is the best part of being near Hoosier National Forest and watching all of God's creation explode with color! Times like this remind me of being out in nature near rock and stream and pond. I'm also reminded of the Good Shepherd, who keeps His watchful eye over us, to guard and protect us from all danger and evil. As we read in Psalm 23, "The Lord is my shepherd. I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me by still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His names sake." It is Jesus who leads us through the paths of life, keeping us safe and secure in the Way that leads to everlasting life. We are His little lambs that partake of green pasture and drink from safe, still waters. How do you suppose these shepherding events of Christ correlate to our life at church? It is in the safe and quiet pastures of God's sanctuary that Jesus nurtures us with the best food for our soul. We are able to lie down amidst fields of living Word, where we can eat to our hearts content. Of course this is the proclamation of Holy Scripture upon which our souls eat and live! There is also the perfect waters in the holy font, where all our sins are washed away in Baptism. And as we ascend the gentle hill to the altar of the Lord it is there that we partake of the Tree of Life, the cross of Christ. From the altar the bread of heaven and cup of everlasting life grant us to receive the mercy of God for our eternal salvation. Could there be better pastures for us Christians to dwell? September 9th is Rally Day, the Sunday in which we celebrate our time with Christ our Shepherd. All people young and old are invited to join us for festivity and fun in creating a new habit of worshipping our Savior every Sunday. There's no better place to be! God's blessings, Pastor Gadbaw
2 Rally Sunday will be September 9 th. Our children are working hard on a hymn to share with you at the beginning of our worship service. We will c o n t i n u e o u r celebration with an Ice Cream Social following the service. The congregation is invited to join us for dessert before lunch! All children are encouraged to attend Sunday school. Supper and Scripture will continue into the Fall! Supper begins at 5:00 with devotions and activities following. Andrea Heeke has organized a dinner, set up and clean up schedule. If you have any questions on that, please ask her. It isn t too late to join in on Wednesday evening fellowship! Confirmation Classes are starting back up September 2 nd. This year a 6 th Grade Pre-Confirmation Class is also offered. The class will focus on teaching the students to be stronger Bible scholars. The classes will be on Sunday evenings at 6:30. For more information contact Pastor or Daniel Warner. Our Annual Soup Supper is October 13 th. Every available member is needed to help in some way to make this a successful project. Prayerfully consider where you can help and please sign the sign-up sheets posted in the Narthex on Sunday, September 9 th. Emmanuel s Choir will begin regular weekly rehearsals on Wednesday, September 5, at 6:30 PM. Be sure to Save the Date Sunday, September 16 th. The Rev. Tim & Beth Heiney have returned to the US on furlough and are scheduled visit us to report on the Lord s work in Guinea. They are planning a presentation, with a thirty minute video, during our Sunday school hour. We will begin at 8:45 to give them time to speak and answer questions. Rev. Heiney will preach that morning and also be available, after worship downstairs, to explain the many display items from the Mission Field in Guinea. Check out their website at The GUILD is to have one Sunday of the month designated for a collection of mites. The large box is in the Narthex to place your collection. We appreciate your support. You will be reminded which Sunday of each month is our collection for LWML mites. On September 6, we are hosting the LWML Board Meeting here at the church starting 9:00 AM. We furnish a breakfast coffee before and pitch in lunch after the meeting. We need baked items for the breakfast and each one brings a dish for lunch. The EUCC is asking us to participate in their Street Fair in September. We will not set up a table or booth, but we can participate by baking for the bake sale with funds going to the groups designated. If you want to do this, take items to EUCC by 11 AM. We ask for more participants to arrange for Altar flowers. This would be for one month. The Guild will pay if necessary. One trip to the florist is all you do, and take to church and put in refrigerator in the KITCHEN. Thankfully, the deacons and helpers take care of them on each Sunday. The Handbell Choir will begin their weekly practice starting September 9 th at 8:15 a.m. This is the beginning of our third year. We are looking forward to an exciting year of bell ringing.

You can listen anytime or download The Lutheran Hour from the September 2 "Eager to Preach the Good News" Guest Speaker: Dr. Oswald Hoffmann In a classic message from 1968, Dr. Oswald Hoffmann says, "The Good News (of Christ) is really good; good enough to believe, good enough to trust." (Romans 1:14-17) September 9 "The Changeless Christ for a Changing World" Guest Speaker: Dr. Walter A. Maier In a classic message first heard in 1937, Dr. Walter A. Maier tells how Christ comes to us in our world of change and decay with a message of unchanging hope. (Hebrews 13:8) September 16 "The Mystery of God" Guest Speaker: Dr. Oswald Hoffmann The undeniable hiddenness of God becomes the openness of God when you see His Son, Jesus Christ. (Isaiah 55:6-9) September 23 "Come, Lord Jesus" Guest Speaker: Rev. Dr. Dale A. Meyer In a classic message from 1998, Dr. Dale Meyer explains how a common table prayer reminds us of our dependence upon God and His gifts. (Exodus 16) September 30 "Cut Off-for Us" Guest Speaker: Dr. Lawrence R. Rast Jr. Sin is serious because it cuts us off from God. Guest speaker Dr. Lawrence Rast says Jesus was cut off from God, in our place. (Mark 9:38-50) A 30 minute Lutheran worship service for Shut-ins and others who are unable to get to church is broadcasted every Sunday DirectTV Channel 377 at 10:30am or anytime at Broadcasting now for 35 years this program is heard in 12 states with the potential of reaching 10 million people. Please share this information with those you know who might be blessed by viewing this service. The following is this month s sermon themes and related scripture. September 2 Stand Against the Devils As believers, we are daily engaged in spiritual warfare against Satan and his fellow demons. The good news is that we can stand firm against these fierce and powerful enemies. The Apostle Paul tells us how and why. (Ephesians 6:10-20) Rev. Dr. Walter A. Maier III, Concordia Theological Seminary ~ Fort Wayne, IN September 9 Perfect Healing When someone is ill, we pray for healing. The Good News that comes from God is that He may grant physical healing, but He always grants us perfect healing through Jesus. (Mark 7:31-37) Rev. Paul E. Shoemaker, Emanuel Lutheran Church ~ New Haven, IN September 16 Help My Unbelief We as Christians believe in Jesus. This belief involves both knowledge and trust. Rightly, we turn to God in the face of trouble; however, at times our faith is eroded, attacked or challenged by the cares, problems, and philosophies of this world. We pray with the man in our text, "I believe, help my unbelief." Through His Word and Sacrament, our Lord indeed sends us the Spirit, so our faith is strengthened, and we rest and hope in the Savior. (Mark 9:24) Rev. Dr. Daniel J. Brege, St. Paul Lutheran Church ~ Decatur, IN September 23 Let God Be God! Why doesn t God do? Why would God allow to happen? Seeking a new-and-improved-god is an activity as old as time. Look and listen to Jesus to discover the true God... and true greatness! Let God be God! (Mark 9:30-37) Rev. Dr. Thomas R. Ahlersmeyer, Holy Cross Lutheran Church ~ Fort Wayne, IN September 30 Belonging to Christ Complain! Complain! Complain! Does that describe someone in your life? Does it describe YOU? Those who belong to Christ, though, have a different sense of faith and life. What's that look like? (Mark 9:38-50) Rev. James L. Elsner, Prince of Peace Lutheran Church ~ Stroh, IN

5 Zeigler Accepts Call to Serve as Speaker of The Lutheran Hour Lutheran Hour Ministries (LHM) is pleased to announce that the Rev. Dr. Michael Zeigler of St. Louis, Missouri, has accepted a call to serve as Speaker of The Lutheran Hour radio program. Zeigler succeeds to the microphone following the departure of Rev. Dr. Gregory Seltz, who accepted a call in 2017 to serve as executive director of the Lutheran Center for Religious Liberty. He will officially begin his ministry with LHM on Oct. 1 and will broadcast his first sermon on Reformation Sunday (Oct. 28). "We are pleased that the Lord has led us to Rev. Zeigler as the next person to carry on our rich history of proclaiming the Gospel through The Lutheran Hour," says LHM President & CEO Kurt Buchholz. "While we will soon have a new voice behind the microphone, our focus for the program remains the same: proclaiming the clear Gospel message of salvation which comes through Jesus Christ." In addition to connecting with people through the traditional methods of radio and in-person events, we look forward to partnering with Rev. Zeigler to utilize the expanding possibilities for sharing the Gospel that are offered by new technologies, says Rev. Dr. Tony Cook, executive director of United States ministries for LHM. Zeigler has served as pastor of Epiphany Lutheran Church in south St. Louis since August Prior to that, he was assistant pastor at nearby Timothy Lutheran Church. Before becoming a pastor, he served as an aircraft maintenance officer in the Air Force. While accepting this call means that I must suffer the heartbreak of no longer being pastor to the people of Epiphany, I have the joy of meeting and working alongside wonderful people with Lutheran Hour Ministries, says Zeigler. The role of Speaker has been held by many distinguished men of God; I am in awe of their work and intend to learn from their example. Despite my own feelings of inadequacy, I step into this role with the confidence that the Lord Himself has called me to share His truth and love with a wider audience. Best of all, this means that I get to know Jesus better and help others know Him, too. Zeigler grew up in a military family, living throughout the United States, from North Dakota to Alabama and Virginia to Colorado. His family moved 11 times before he finished high school in Springfield, Missouri. He graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado, in 2001 with a bachelor s degree in general engineering and served for five years in the Air Force. He left active duty in 2006 to enter Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, where he completed a Master of Divinity degree in theological studies and a Ph.D. in doctrinal theology. He continues to serve part-time as an Air Force Reserve officer and as a guest instructor at Concordia Seminary and has previously been a guest lecturer for the Concordia University Network and a ministry leadership course coordinator for Christian Friends of New Americans. He published a book entitled Christian Hope Among Rivals: How Life-Organizing Stories Anticipate the End of Evil in 2017 and has written several papers for symposia, circuit meetings, and national conferences. He and his wife, Amy, have four children. The Lutheran Hour is the world s longest-running Christian radio program and currently airs on more than 1,800 stations throughout North America as well as the American Forces Network. The program reaches more than one million listeners each week and is also available online, through a mobile app, and on various new media platforms.
