1 Issue 4 29th September 2017 Principal s Message It often feels as if there are more than five days in a week at Christ the King College! This is definitely not because the week feels long (indeed, the weeks fly by!) and you all know how much I love my job, but because the staff and students here seem to achieve so much in a week that it is quite unbelievable This week, for example, we began with our first ever Sports Award Evening which was a wonderful success; that same afternoon saw our Year9 students watching Crashing, a drama about keeping safe; the Duke of Edinburgh Award programme goes from strength to strength with another evening presentation last Wednesday; we were then amazed by the incredible response to our Isle of Wight Bake Off Day and have certainly indulged ourselves with the tempting cakes on offer; the College has been conducting tours for those families across the Island wishing to join us; we have also been joined this week by the photographer taking shots for our new Sixth Form Prospectus! This week has also seen, amongst other a host of other activities, a lively meeting of Glee Club, a packed Sports Hall full of Global Rock dancers and a range of sports fixtures. Amongst all of this, our students continue to be the most wonderful ambassadors for our College and the feedback from whoever comes into contact with them is consistently positive. We are so proud of them all. Also making us extremely busy but very excited are the preparations for our move into Phase 1 of our new build. The realisation is sinking in across the College that the moving date is becoming increasingly close. I am delighted to report that we are completely on schedule for students to move in by November 1 st. As with taking possession of a new house, we receive the keys on Friday, October 27 th ; also as with a new house, we need to move all of our possessions from Upper College (the old Archbishop King building) into the new build. I am sure you can only begin to imagine the enormity of the task in front of us during these coming weeks and half term. Please keep us all in your thoughts and prayers as we embark on this major move; the boxes are beginning to arrive and staff will soon be having their training in packing the boxes (I am not joking!) Finally, I am writing this newsletter on National Poetry Day. Despite having the privileged position of Principal of Christ the King College, deep down I will always be an English teacher! I am, therefore, indulging my love of poetry by concluding this message with the lovely lines of John Keats, who as we know stayed on the Island during , residing in two houses very close to us here at Christ the King College and also in Shanklin which he called a most beautiful place which he then describes in one of his many letters to his friend, the poet, satirist and playwright, John Hamilton Reynolds. It was the presence of the sea that also so inspired Keats and, in the same letter, he wrote, But the sea, Jack, the sea the little waterfall then the white cliff and then he shared his beautiful sonnet which is said to have been written in Shanklin, called On the Sea. It begins, of course, with the immortal words, It keeps eternal whisperings around desolate shores, and with its mighty swell Gluts ten thousand Caverns So, I wish everyone a lovely weekend on our beautiful Island surrounded by the sea and I hope that you will forgive the indulgent English lesson! Pat Goodhead Prayer O LORD God Almighty, Father of angels and men, We praise and bless your holy name for all your goodness and loving kindness to humanity. We bless you for our creation, preservation, and for your unceasing generosity to us throughout our lives; But above all, we bless you for your great love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ. We bless you for bringing us safe to the beginning of a new day. Grant that this day we fall into no sin, Neither run into any kind of danger. Keep us, we pray, from all things hurtful to body or soul, and grant us your pardon and peace, So that, being cleansed from all our sins, We might serve you with quiet hearts and minds, and continue in the same until our life's end, through Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Redeemer. Amen. (John Wesley, ; found at the website of the oldest active Methodist chapel, Newbiggin Chapel)
2 Go Yellow Day - Friday, 6th October Students and staff will have the opportunity to wear yellow on Friday, 6th October in exchange for a donation to the Earl Mountbatten Hospice. The day is being arranged to support the Island Hospice and is the chosen charity of Lisseter House. Message from the Pastoral Team It is incredibly important to the College to have strong relationships and communication between the College and home. The support of parents is very much appreciated. If parents feel it necessary to speak to staff in person, we would like to remind parents to phone the College to arrange a mutually convenient time, in order to avoid disappointment and ensure that appropriate members of staff are available. Thank you for your support. Whole College Photograph We have arranged with a professional photographic company to visit us on Thursday, 5th October to take a whole College photograph. This is obviously quite a momentous event, and we hope that the sun will shine to enable this to happen. Sixth Form students are asked to wear their formal uniform for this occasion. We will be in communication with the company on Wednesday to confirm arrangements and discuss altering the day in the case of inclement weather. 4 Library News Summer Reading Challenge. In the last week of the summer reading challenge, the competition is extremely close in some year groups. Over six hundred books totalling more than 200 thousand words have been read so far. Well done everyone! Congratulations to 9DTH who have maintained their lead this week. 8LGI have maintained their narrow lead over 8MRE with only a few hundred pages between them. 7JDO have taken the lead from 7GHG this week. They are less than 100 pages ahead of 7RLO. Full results will be announced next week with certificates and house credits to all participants. Please finish logging all reading over the weekend. Literacy House Credits The Literacy House credits system is to reward students' efforts and achievements in all things Literacy related. Literacy House credits can be awarded for anything from speaking confidently in a group or class situation, reading aloud with confidence, trying extra hard with handwriting/spelling/punctuation, etc. or an overall excellent effort with a piece of work. Literacy House credits are awarded for effort as much as for achievement. At the end of each term, students with the highest number of Literacy House credits will receive a certificate as part of the Celebration Worships. This month, Hollis House has made a fantastic start. Well done! IWSB Short Story Writing Competition 2017 The Isle of Wight Society for the Blind Short Story Writing Competition is back! This year's theme is 'Spirit of Christmas' so use your imagination and let your creative juices flow. The three celebrities from last year, Robert Glenister, Katy Manning and Edana Minghella, have kindly agreed to read the winning stories this year. The word count for under 18s is 750. 5 Diary Dates October Friday, 6th Go Yellow Mufti Day Wednesday, 11th UCAS Information Evening Monday, 23rd Friday, 27th Half Term Monday, 30th & Tuesday, 31st Development Days Theme: Proof of Faith James Chapter 2 Verse 20 to 26 You foolish person, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless? Was not our father Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. And the scripture was fulfilled that says, Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness, and he was called God s friend. You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone. In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction? As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.
6 Issue 04 Friday 29th September 2017 London Debate Programme On Thursday 21 st September, Elsie Lewis and Rees Cooper, both Year 12, accompanied by Mrs Stirling travelled to London to take part in the London Local Debate Programme. The purpose of the Local Debates is to introduce students to the concept of debating and prepare them to participate in the final British Council Mock EU in November. We were on the 5 47am ferry as we needed to catch the 6 15am coach to London Victoria. We found it amusing that the debates were called local when we had such an early start to get there! We walked part of the way and took the underground part of the way to get to Birkbeck University in Bloomsbury Park for 9 15am. Students were then divided in to groups to take part in introductory activities designed to teach the fundamentals of making arguments. This session focused on how to make arguments with confidence and clarity. Later in the morning, there were sessions which Identified the key differences between making an argument and responding to one and an introduction to points of information and to the format of a debate. After lunch, there was a draw to see which schools would be paired to work together and who they would be opposing, and then the Brexit-themed motion was announced. We only had twenty minutes of preparation time, to work with the pair of students from another school, before The Debate Challenge. We had to oppose the motion, based on the freedom of movement within Europe and we found this challenging! After the debate, we had feedback which we found very useful. We are all scored individually and then these scores will be entered into a national league table and the top thirty-five schools will be invited to the EU Mock Council. Fingers crossed! We had a while afterwards before our coach back to Portsmouth so we walked to Trafalgar Square and Buckingham Palace. It was a long day but very enjoyable and worthwhile. Bronze DofE Presentations On Wednesday 20th and Wednesday 27th September, the thirty-five Year 11 students who took part in DofE Bronze expeditions in July, showed their presentations to an audience of DofE Leaders, Assessors, parents, and students in Year 10 who are about to start training for their expeditions. The presentation is the final part of the expedition section of the award. The expedition process begins in November each year with training one hour a week after college. This training includes navigation, cooking, camp craft and 1st aid. In December, we go on a day hike and then the two-day practice expedition is over the Easter holiday. The assessed expedition is usually a weekend at the start of July. This expedition needs to have a project aim and it is this which is presented as the final part of the process. Both evenings went very well. Our Year 11 students were all well-prepared and able to share their enthusiasm for DofE with those waiting to start the award. If any student in Years are interested in starting DofE and were unable to attend any of the evenings, they must see me as soon as possible. Closing date for new registrations is end of this half term. Mrs Stirling 1

8 Issue 04 Friday 29th September 2017 Christ the King College U13 Girls vs Carisbrooke College U13 Girls With the ever-growing popularity of women s football, it is as always with KS3, an extremely difficult task to pick a squad of 14 out of the twenty-something enthusiastic and able girls that attend training each week. The intention is to rotate the playing squad as much as possible each week to ensure everyone gets the opportunity to represent our football team. On Tuesday afternoon, our Under 13 girls hosted Carisbrooke College s counterparts for our first fixture of the season. With a new team being fielded, some of our players, for the good of the team, had to play out of position and we had three eager substitutes waiting their turn. It s fair to say that our girls started the game in a lively fashion and opened the scoring within the first five minutes through Phoebe Connor who showed composure to slot her effort around the keeper. It didn t take long for the score to be doubled through Mia Richardson. She was in the right place at the right time, exactly what we wanted from one of our strikers. Shortly after, against the run of play, we lost possession of the ball in our midfield and Carisbrooke were able to break through and reduce the deficit to just one. It could have been easy for our heads to drop, but the girl s resilience shone through and we were able to add two more goals before the midway break. The third and fourth goals were converted by Aurora Tout-Walters and Holly Mariner, respectively. At halftime Christ the King lead four goals to one and were good value for that score line, with some particular good play on either wing by Callie Jacobs and Holly Stephan. With play resuming for the second half, it was more of the same for Christ the King, who enjoyed good periods of possession, which paid off soon enough, with Phoebe Connor scoring her second goal. It didn t take long for another Christ the King goal. Mia Richardson slotted home to record her second of the game and Christ the King s sixth. Six soon turned to seven and eight with Freya Fisk slotting home and Phoebe Connor rounding off an impressive display to earn her hat-trick and putting her side into a commanding 8-1 lead. The positive performance was added to with the final goal from Holly Stephan, who had been unlucky not to score before this point. Her tidy finish gave her side a comprehensive 9-1 victory. Despite there being goals galore, it is also worth mentioning what a great job goalkeeper Millie Robertson did, who was always ready to come off her line and sweep up behind the defence to clear the through ball. We now look forward to our next fixture at home against Medina College on Wednesday 11th October, which is sure to be a challenge against tough, experienced opposition. Millie Robertson, Poppy Starkey, Louise Young, Aurora Tout-Walters (1), Naomi Holdsworth, Jess Heng, Bella McGrory-Patton, Holly Mariner (1), Phoebe Connor (3), Callie Jacobs, Holly Stephan (1), Mia Richardson (2), Amelia Turner, Freya Fisk (1). 9 Issue 04 Friday 29th September 2017 Year 7 Boys Football ~ Another Win! A brilliant performance again from the Year 7 boys. Tonight they made it two wins out of two with a convincing win over Sandown Bay. After thirty five pupils turned out for training on Tuesday it was very tough picking a squad of fourteen for tonight's match. There is certainly a lot sporting talent in this year group. The boys started well with some slick passing from the back through midfield to the attack. After five minutes the floodgates began to open and goals one, two and three came quickly. At half time the score was 6-0. In the second half the team carried on playing some sublime passing and before too long the score was 8-0. Sandown continued to defend and at the end they scored a consolation goal. The whole squad played so well, a special mention to the three boys who made debuts, Harry Foster, Harry Benwell and Shay Hollinghead. The goal scorers were Lennon Beaumont 4, Harry Foster 2, Alfie Snow 1, Shay Hollinghead 1. Team :- Amari Blake, Joshua Wright, Oliver Webb, Sid Taylor, Fabio Cretella, Finn Smith, Lennon Beaumont, Alfie Snow, Nathaniel Wilson, Shay Hollingshead, Harry Benwell, Harry Foster, Josh Edgerton. Next up is away to Cowes next Tuesday. Well done boys. I was very proud how you approached the game. Mr Haydon 4
