1 Dear Parents, Holy Cross Catholic Primary School NEWSLETTER 11 th March 2016 (01983) Parents Evenings. A letter will be coming out on Monday to give you the opportunity to meet with class teachers during the final week of term to discuss your child s progress. YR and Y1 Parents Evenings will take place on Monday 21 st and Wednesday 23 rd March. Y2,3,4,5,6 Parents Evenings will take place on Monday 21 st and Tuesday 22 nd March. If you already have a regular review appointment booked to discuss your child s progress with Mrs. Blair and the class teacher(s), then there is no need to make an additional appointment for the Parents Evenings. Thank you. Calling Holy Cross Past Pupils up to 1995 As you may be aware, the Sisters will be leaving the Convent of the Cross in the late spring. During her many years as Head teacher at Holy Cross, Sr. Marguerite documented the life of the school in a wonderful collection of photo albums. The Sisters would like to invite you to view the school photo albums before they leave at the end of May. Please could you pass on the invite to anyone you think might like to see the Sisters and the photographs. If you would like to view the albums they will be accessible from: Sunday the 13 th March from 2.00pm-7pm, Monday the 14 th March - Friday 18 th March from 10.00am 7pm And the last chance to view will be on Saturday the 19 th from 10.00am 5pm. CAFOD Lent appeal and Sport Relief Thank you for your support in helping us raise money for CAFOD, our Lenten charity. They are helping by providing water pumps and bore holes to provide water to villages across countries like Uganda and Zimbabwe. We are also supporting this year s Sport Relief effort on Friday 18th March and hope to raise some money through various means. We aim to link this with the CAFOD Lent theme as both are working to achieve similar outcomes. More details of the event nearer the time. Please see attached poster and posters around the school. Our CAFOD reps Ysa and Hazel drew this bear and divided it up into sections for people to buy for 20p per section. One lucky person will win the bear when the raffle is drawn on Friday 18th March, Sport Relief day when we will be walking with water. Have you found any sponsors yet? Just a few pennies from everyone can go a long way to helping those around the world who don't have clean safe water like we do. Fairtrade Friday Today (Friday) we had a whole school focus on understanding Fairtrade and what it means for smallholder farmers round the world. Following an assembly, classes then developed the theme and each class tasted some fair trade foods and discussed the difference it might make to the farmers if we choose to buy items with the Fair trade logo. It means they are guaranteed a fair price for the foods they grow which will make a difference to their whole
2 life...maybe the difference between having enough food to eat and money to buy essentials. Hopefully they will bring home the key messages to you! 2016 Mardi Gras Carnival inspiration afternoon Yesterday (Thursday) the New Carnival Company visited Holy Cross to talk to and work with years 4,5 and 6. They learnt about how to design costumes and what the theme is for this year s Mardi Gras in Ryde on Saturday 25th June. The theme is to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare and each participating group has been allocated a particular play to inspire their costumes. Our play is the comedy "Twelfth Night" which does have some links to the Isle of Wight. The New Carnival Company, helped by members of staff, acted out the general storyline and then we got stuck in to designing costumes. There were some fantastic ideas from the pupils. Letters have now been sent home with application forms to fill in for those who would like to be part of Carnival club - they need to be returned by next Wednesday 16 the March as we have a planned visit to Carisbrooke Castle on Monday 21 March. I am looking forward to starting work on Thursdays after Easter. Mrs Ody Bloodhound SSC We are delighted that an ambassador from the Bloodhound SSC project will be visiting Holy Cross on Thursday 24 th March. The aim of the project is to share the excitement of the attempt to break the World Land Speed Record by achieving a speed of 1000 miles per hour, and to inspire children to become the innovators, scientists and engineers of the future. There is currently a huge short fall of professional engineers nationally, which is growing year on year. Only 10% of professional graduate engineers are women, and sadly, only 50% of secondary schools have girls studying for an A level in Physics. The ambassador will be working with Year 2 and Year 6 to build and race balloon powered cars, and the children are already extremely enthusiastic about the event! If you would like to find out more information about the project, please visit Who knows, maybe Holy Cross will produce a World Land Speed Record holder of the future! The Bloodhound ambassador is only able to visit one primary school on the island, and so we are very lucky to have been offered the opportunity to join in. The visit will also act as a precursor to the KS1 trip to the London Science Museum in April, which promises to be a fantastic, hands-on experience. Year 5 and 6 will also be paying a visit to the Science Museum on 14 th July as part of their visit to London in the summer.
3 PARK AND STRIDE Even if you live too far away from school to walk, you can still walk part of the way because Waitrose have kindly agreed for us to use their Car Park in the mornings from am, and in the afternoons from pm. If you are interested in doing this we will give you a pass to display in your windscreen. The pass will enable you to park in the Waitrose Car park within the allocated times and then walk the remainder of your journey to school. Mrs Horton has letters if you would like to take this up. Pope Francis Prayer for the Year of Mercy Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: If you knew the gift of God! You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy, you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen. First Communion Programme Last chance for any further names, please, for Year 3 children of Catholic families, to register for the First Communion course, at St David's Catholic Church, East Cowes. The course begins on Monday 25th April, and continues every Monday (except for bank holidays/half term) from pm, leading to the First Communion Mass on Sunday 17th July at 11am at St David's, with a final Monday session the next day. While the children meet with the parish catechists in the church for each session, Fr Jonathan holds an informal "class" in the presbytery for the parents (both are welcome, but one will suffice), or any other adult family member involved in the Catholic formation of the child. Please contact Fr Jonathan or jredversharris@portsmouthdiocese.org.uk
4 The Class Teacher is the first point of contact concerning pupils in their class. Class teachers can be ed through or through their school addresses: Y6, Y5, Y3, Y3 & Y4 Y2 Y1, YR SENCO PE Head Breakfast Club Reminder that Holy Cross has a Breakfast Club which runs from am Monday Friday. It costs 2.50 per day per child and includes Breakfast. There are currently spaces available on most mornings, and so bookings can usually be taken at short notice (i.e. the day before). If you are interested in using the Breakfast Club places should be booked and paid for through the school office. Breakfast Club can be pre booked and paid online via Scopay. Each child has a link code generated via the office. This link enables you to register online to pay and book quickly and easily for breakfast club, school dinners, clubs and trips. Please contact the school office for further information.
