1 3 CHRIST Word 3 CHRIST Word Week 11 Week 1 1 The In the virgin beginning will conceive was the Word, give birth to the a son, Word was they with will call God, him Immanuel (which means God with us ). Matthew 1:23 the Word was God.. We see this verse most often around Christmas time. But this isn t just a verse for the holiday season it s important all year round. Let s take a look at what s said in this verse. First, we see that - Christ is born of a virgin mother, which means he had no earthly father. Instead, we see underst that he was is God s Son. So why is this important? Because we need to recognize that Jesus is the Son of God; He IS God. He wasn t just your average guy in fact it was only the Son of God who could live a sinless life eventually pay the penalty for our sins. Secondly, we see that he was to be called Immanuel which means God with us. And that s so important because it has a lot to do with the relationship that he wants to have with you me. I mean, if Jesus IS God God is the creator of the entire universe, His power is incomprehensible. But as big as powerful as He is, He still wants a relationship with YOU! In fact, he wants it so much that He sent his son Jesus to be born live among us ultimately die for our sins. So Jesus is not just some average guy He is the all-powerful Son of God. But despite that, even when there is nothing for him to gain from us, he loves us enough to desire a close relationship. So how do we respond? By seeking after that same relationship with Him! Luke 23:42, 43 Then In the he beginning said, Jesus, was remember the Word, me when the you Word come was into with your God, kingdom. Jesus answered the Word him, was Truly God.. I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise. Luke 23:42, 43 In every sport, there is a goal in mind. Maybe, this season, you your team have made it your goal to be the league champion. Maybe your goal is to be the most improved passing team. or the - best defensive team. Whatever that goal is, it should drive how you act during the season. For instance, say your goal is to be the best defensive team. If that s the case, then your practices better include a lot of work on defensive positioning, man- to- man team defensive strategy. In fact, your team will need to go the extra mile to ensure that, at the end of the day, defense is your focus. Last week we learned about who Jesus is that He is not some average guy who made a few wise statements. Rather, we see that He is the Son of God, the only one who could come to earth, live a perfect life ultimately give His life as the penalty for our sins. So what does that all mean? Well it means that because of Christ s sacrifice on the cross, if we believe in Him, by grace through faith, we have the opportunity to spend eternity with Him in heaven. But heaven isn t just a goal; it should also be our focus. Just like in the practice we described above, if your goal is to live for heaven; for eternity; then the way you live should reflect that. And that means making your ultimate desire to serve God in every decision, in every area every way. age: 4 2 age: 4 2 In every sport, there is a goal in mind. Leviticus 17:11 For In the life beginning of a creature was is the in Word, the blood, the I Word have given was with to you God, to make atonement for the yourselves Word was on God.. the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one s life. Leviticus 17:11 When you violate a rule in sports, there are always repercussions. In football, if you commit a penalty, your team may lose a down or a number of yards. In basketball, fouling a player means you give the - other team a chance to take free throws. For every violation, there must be a punishment. Atonement is not a word we hear about a lot. But it s a huge part of our relationship with Christ, a relationship that we ve begun to describe over the last couple of weeks. In a lot of ways, atonement is a concept that is very similar to what we talked about in sports; for every rule violation there is a repercussion,, likewise, for every sin we commit each time we disobey God there is a necessary penalty that must be paid. But we re not just talking about losing a few yards or a couple of free throws. Romans 6:23 tells us that the wages of sin is death. So our rightful penalty for sinning is our very lives. That sounds pretty serious doesn t it! Fortunately for us, there was One who could take all of that sin all of our rightful punishment on himself. Jesus sacrifice on the cross provided atonement for our sin disobedience. Let s think about that; Jesus died to save us from our disobedience against Him! Christ s blood has atoned for covered our sin but we must accept this free gift of salvation ask forgiveness for our sins. 4 3 Word ME 3 Word ME Week 41 Week 4 1 For In the it is beginning with your was heart the that Word, you believe the Word are was justified, with God, it is with your mouth the that Word you was profess God.. your faith are saved. Romans 10:10 Belief. It s a word that really separates the special teams from the rest of the pack. Any team can have talent. Any team can play well. But it s when a group of players coaches really believe in the - goals that they ve set out to attain that they become really successful. Why? Because being great at the game of basketball is only part of the equation. The greatest example of team s really believing in their goal can be seen in times of adversity. It s when a team is down late in the game or has a call not go their way that you see their true colors. Will they crumble fold because their goals their team aren t really that important to them. Or will the love they have for their teammates coaches motivate them to press on persevere no matter what the cost. Our belief in Christ is a lot like that. It s really easy to say I believe there s a God or I think Jesus was who He said He was. But its when our backs are against the wall; situations where saying our believe in Christ isn t the most popular thing to do; that we find out if what we are saying is really what we BELIEVE. So let s consider this question this week. Do I really BELIEVE in God that Jesus was the Son of God who came died for my sins. If you have any questions about this, or if you have trouble answering, ask your coach or devotional coordinator what it means to truly BELIEVE in God. But as for me my household, we will serve the Lord. Joshua 24:15 We like to think that the path to a championship is like a golden road of glory, trophies accolades. But many champions will tell you that it is anything but. Oftentimes, it s full of hard work, long hours of - practicing working drills far too many obstacles. But if championships were easy to achieve, if the road to one was easy without ups downs, they wouldn t be as desired. This verse in Joshua talks about a road of sorts; the road we must walk to follow Christ in our day to day life. Joshua makes a bold statement; sometimes, walking down that road of following Christ seems undesirable hard. Sometimes, we see others who are not obedient to God we ask questions like, I ve been following God, so why haven t I gotten what they ve got or how come things haven t gotten easier for me if God has my best in mind? Unfortunately for us, we rate our experience with God our relationship with Him to the ups downs of everyday life. After all, the Bible tells us that just because we believe in Christ doesn t mean that we get an easier life. Just like winning a championship means being willing to pay the price, following God means having the discipline to continue pursuing His will for your life even when it seems undesirable or difficult. But take heart, the result of a life lived for God will make the tough journey worth it. Choose this day whom you will serve. 6 3 SERVE Word 3 SERVE Word Week 61 Week 6 1 No In one the beginning can serve two was masters. the Word, Either you the will Word hate was the one with God, love the other, or you the will Word be devoted was God.. to the one despise the other. You cannot serve both God money. Matthew 6:24 The word service is tough for many people; after all, it is much easier to be served than it is to serve. We think that being a servant means that we don t have the freedom to do what we want; that - there is something that has power over us. And so we avoid it. But the Bible tells us that not matter what the situation, we are always serving it just depends on WHO we are serving. Matthew 6:24 talks about two different masters that we can serve; either God or money (really you could insert anything here that we strive after that is not of God). And this verse tells us something very important; we CAN NOT serve both of those masters. So let s consider the choices: On one h, you have money the desires of this world. They seem great make us feel like we could do anything. How is that for service?! But the world is full of examples of people whose earthly desire couldn t provide them with true joy or satisfaction. Why? Because those earthly desires are temporary. When you die, those things don t come with you. However, our God is eternal. He has been, is always will be. And when we put our trust in Him, we serve a master who has our best in mind whose plan for our life, though sometimes difficult for us to underst, is exactly what we need.
