BOTTOM LINE: GOD S STORY IS THE BEST PLACE TO START WHEN IT COMES TO KNOWING GOD S WILL FOR OUR LIVES. INTRODUCTION Wishing on stars, looking in the clouds and scanning the horizon for a sign might work in movies, but how do we figure out what God wants for real people in the real world? As simple and as crazy at it may sound, we need to look no further than God s Word. While a sign might seem easier and much faster than actually reading the Bible, digging into God s Word is the best way for us to get the big picture of God s story and how we fit into it. WONDER. 2 STATEMENT OF FAITH ABOUT GOD God is the one and only true God, yet He exists in three persons: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. God is the Creator, so everything belongs to Him and is under His control. God is holy, so He is righteous, majestic and loving. God is all knowing and purposeful, so He s at work to bring about His will. No person, thing or idea compares to God. ABOUT THE SCRIPTURES God reveals Himself to us through the Bible, and it is 100% accurate, reliable and authoritative. ABOUT PEOPLE People are made in God s image and for His pleasure. But everybody falls short of God s intention, or ideal, for people. In other words, everyone has sinned. As a result, we are all separated from Him, even though He wants an intimate relationship with each of us. ABOUT SALVATION That s why Jesus, God s Son, came and lived on this earth, died and rose again. God offers His free gift of salvation to all who believe in Jesus and accept Him as Savior, the only way to be forgiven and reconciled to God. Anyone who accepts this gift is adopted as a son or daughter into God s family and will live with Him forever in heaven. Scripture marked NIV is taken from the HOLY BIBLE, NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION. 3 CREATING THE EXPERIENCE Pg. 1 We believe that the set, stage, music and everything in your room communicates a message without you saying a word. That s why we put together a list of production ideas to help you set the stage for the session and the series. From the music you play when students come in the room to the worship set your band plays, we want to make sure that your room conveys Labyrinth in a multi-sensory way. There is a downloadable checklist available in your series downloads that will give you all the elements for this session (and the entire series). BACKGROUND PLAYLIST FOR LABYRINTH SERIES Flashing Red Light Means Go by The Boxer Rebellion (from Union) End of Me by Building 429 (from Building 429) We Are Broken by Paramore (from Riot!) This by Darius Rucker (from Charleston, SC 1966) Don t Carry It All by The Decemberists (from The King Is Dead) Consider the Ravens by Dustin Kensrue (from Please Come Home) Don t Waste Your Life by Lecrae (from Rebel) The Cave by Mumford & Sons (from The Cave and the Open Sea) The Outsiders by NEEDTOBREATHE (from The Outsiders) Beautiful Ending by BarlowGirl (from Love & War) WORSHIP PLAYLIST FOR LABYRINTH SESSION TWO King of Glory by Jesus Culture (from Your Love Never Fails) Skeleton Bones by John Mark McMillan (from The Medicine) Psalm 13 by UK Vineyard (from Love Divine: Set the Captives Free) Center by Charlie Hall (from Flying Into Daybreak) Lifesong by Casting Crowns (from Lifesong) THE SET Obtain three large poster boards or banners to create this set. More creative students can be called upon to draw these mazes or outline them from a projector image. Each poster will have a different maze or labyrinth drawn or printed on it and a new poster will be displayed each week of the series. Session one will display a poster with a high level of difficulty, a lot of turns and passages that make it time consuming and confusing. This labyrinth will help convey to the students the frustration we face when we try and manage every aspect of life and seek to direct it by our own means. Session two will display the first poster as well as a second poster with a new, more intermediate level maze that will continue to represent what life looks like for us when we begin allowing God to take hold of our decisions. Session three will display the first and second posters, along with a third poster with a maze that can easily be solved to finally illustrate the simplicity of God s will for our lives loving Him and loving people while not getting so caught up in the nooks and crannies of life. It s about getting to the center, the crux of it all, to glorify God.

CREATING THE EXPERIENCE Pg. 2 Below are a visual examples of how this set might look. To cover more space on stage, or if your budget permits, you may also want to hang additional mazes with fishing line in varying sizes and heights to create a fuller back ground or hand out 3X5 cards with a maze printed on them as a take-home visual reminder to students of what they learned during this series. To best communicate this idea of progressing simplicity the speaker may want to take a few minutes during the message to solve the maze. If you re drawing these by hand, this link provides a step-by-step guide to creating a labyrinth: For images similar to these search Celtic labyrinth designs. SERIES ART Art for PowerPoint backgrounds and for series promotional ads is available as a free download with every series. Visit the XP3 website, log on to your account and download the images to use in your presentation, newsletters and website. VIDEO A video bumper is available for the Labyrinth series and was created to be used as an intro for all three sessions of the Labyrinth series. You can purchase the video by logging into your XP3 account and clicking on the XP3 videos link.

MIDDLE SCHOOL ADAPTATION: LABYRINTH The following activities and illustrations will help middle school students connect with the subject matter in ways that engage them physically, mentally, socially and sometimes emotionally. You can also adapt the Labyrinth series for middle school students by using the teaching outline found in this document to edit the teaching script to a 20-minute presentation. In addition, by using the separate middle school small group dialog questions (found in the series downloads) that are geared specifically for sixth to eighth graders, you can make each section more middle school friendly. SESSION 2 GAME: WHO AM I? (Play this game as an icebreaker to Session 2.) Prepare enough name labels so that each of your students has a label with the name of a well-known historical figure, singer, actor, Bible character or some other famous person on it. When all of your students have arrived, stick a label on each of their backs with their new secret identity.. Let them know that they have ten minutes to ask yes or no questions in order to find out who they are. The first five people to figure out their identity are the winners. As a fun prize, you can give out silly stick on mustaches, goofy glasses or fake noses. SESSION 2 ILLUSTRATION: WRITING ON THE WALL (Use this illustration after teaching point B in the Application section of the teaching script.) Using an overhead projector, begin writing the following words on a transparency: wait, move forward, go right, stop and don t. As you write these words, have your students try to guess what the words are as you write them. After you have finished writing all of the words, tell them that when we try to read the writing on the wall, it can be like a guessing game. Instead, they can go to God s Word in order to know what God s big picture is for their lives, as well as the specific purpose He has for them.

TEACHING SCRIPT The teaching script is divided into five sections. INTRODUCTION This introduction is intended to connect you, the communicator, to the audience usually through a personal story or observation. We ve included our stories, but you may want to substitute your own story in this section. TENSION The tension moves the message from the me mentality of the introduction to a we mentality. For example, a transition statement might be, At some point in our lives, we have all been jealous of someone over something. TRUTH Once the tension builds, the next logical step is to uncover the truth of what the Bible says about the topic. APPLICATION At this point, the message moves to a you mentality in order to teach the application. The you is the student. Take God s truth and unpack how it relates to each student so that he or she can apply it to everyday life. LANDING Here it is important to land the message on what each student needs to know and do with what they ve heard. Just as the message began with a personal story or observation, the message also ends with a me mentality. For example, one possible landing statement might be, I have a greater sense of purpose knowing that God created me in His image. Leave the students with a clear sense of what all of you should do with what you ve heard. W W W. X P 3 S T U D E N T S. O R G

TEACHING OUTLINE Pg. 1 BOTTOM LINE: GOD S STORY IS THE BEST PLACE TO START WHEN IT COMES TO KNOWING GOD S WILL FOR OUR LIVES. INTRODUCTION Last week we started talking about the idea of who God uses and who God speaks to. You get that you are able to play a part, but now what? How do you figure out what God is saying? TENSION Sometimes trying to figure out what God wants us to do, what God s plan is for us, feels complicated. We either give up and forget about it, or we go crazy. TRUTH Have you ever heard of a guy named Gideon? Gideon is a guy whose story is found in the Old Testament book of Judges An angel of the Lord appears to Gideon. And Gideon is just a normal guy. This angel tells Gideon that through him God will strike down the Midianites, the people who are oppressing the Israelites. Gideon said to God, If you will save Israel by my hand as you have promised look I will place a wool fleece on the threshing floor. If there is dew only on the fleece and all the ground is dry, then I will know that you will save Israel by my hand, as you said. And that is what happened. Gideon rose early the next day; he squeezed the fleece and wrung out the dew a bowlful of water (Judges 6:36-38 NIV). But what if we don t need an angel to show up to tell us how to live? What if there was something we were given that was just as clear? All over the pages of the Bible we find God s plan for us, God s purpose for us. These are part of the smaller picture when it comes to God s plan, but they are also part of the bigger picture. God wants to restore what has been broken by sin, starting all the way back at our beginning in the Garden of Eden. Corinthians 5:18-19 says it this way: All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ (NIV).

TEACHING OUTLINE Pg. 2 Scripture says it like this: Remember the former things, those of long ago; I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me. I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say: My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please (Isaiah 46:9-10 NIV). APPLICATION There are certain choices we can make that make us better followers of God. And the guidance we need to make those decisions and choices is at our fingertips. LANDING Let s stop being lazy about it and start digging into the Word. We just need to know His Word well enough to know what it asks of us. And then we need to start doing it.

HOW TO CONTEXTUALIZE A TEACHING SCRIPT HOW TO CONTEXTUALIZE A TEACHING SCRIPT The XP3 Students Team wants you to take our work and make it work within the context of your current student ministry. We encourage you to tailor an XP3 Students Teaching Script so that it directly speaks to your current church context, allows for the master teacher s personality to shine in and through the message and parallels the personal world and community of your students. HOW TO DETERMINE THE LANDSCAPE OF YOUR YOUTH GROUP Who are the student clusters in your ministry? Typically a student cluster is a homogeneous group of 5-10 students who act, behave, talk and dress the same. Understand what they love to do, eat, listen to and watch. What type of student clusters gather at your church ( athletes, artistic types, Emo, etc.)? How many different student clusters come to your church? What student clusters will you initially target when you teach? Identify your youth ministry distinctive. What makes your youth group different? What does your youth group tend to focus on? What does your youth group do well? What traditions are a part of your youth group ( baptism, communion, weekly dinner)? What makes your youth group remarkable? What does your youth group offer? HOW CAN EVERY XP3 STUDENTS BOTTOM LINE CONNECT WITH THE MISSION, UNIQUENESS AND VALUES OF YOUR STUDENT MINISTRY? HOW TO FIND YOUR OWN VOICE: THE MASTER TEACHER S STYLE 1. Embrace your uniqueness. God made you. Be yourself! Don t try to pretend to be Andy Stanley or Reggie Joiner or Jared Herd when you teach. Your students need you to be you. 2. Know your strengths and weaknesses as a speaker. Have a few of your adult volunteers give you constructive feedback on your delivery. 3. Tell your own stories. Rely on your experience in order to personalize the message. Allow your students to get to know you through your storytelling. 4. Pray and be confident. Thankfully God gave us His Holy Spirit to empower all ministers of the gospel. God doesn t leave His communicators alone on stage. HOW TO SPEAK TO THE STUDENTS REAL NEEDS: THE STUDENTS SOCIAL SCENE 1. Define the top issues that are transpiring in your student ministry. a) Think through the five social areas students live in: family, school, church, friends and extracurricular activities (sports, theater, clubs, band, etc.). b) Observe, talk to and survey students. They will tell you their needs. c) Feel free to cruise social media in order to gain an understanding of their world. 2. Directly speak to students needs by adapting the Application and Landing sections of the teaching script. It may be more productive to deal contextually with your students needs rather than sticking to the script verbatim. Granted, your students will deal with application in small group, but it is helpful to at least speak to their real needs from the stage. Speaking generally about their issues helps them process faster when asked in small group. 3. Highlight top issues in the Tension section of the teaching script. It can be helpful to add to the tension by using current issues your youth ministry is experiencing.

TEACHING SCRIPT Pg. 1 BOTTOM LINE: GOD S STORY IS THE BEST PLACE TO START WHEN IT COMES TO KNOWING GOD S WILL FOR OUR LIVES. INTRODUCTION A. Last week we started talking about the idea of who God uses and who God speaks to. And we said that a lot of us disqualify ourselves for all kinds of reasons. We think because of things we have done or haven t done we couldn t possibly be used by God. But we took a look at the story of Rahab and discovered that God doesn t disqualify us. We do. And if we are willing, if we are looking, we can see what God is doing. So who does God use? Who does God speak to? Who does God communicate with in order to convey His plan and His purpose? Anybody and everybody. Every single one of us is qualified. B. And this was good news to a lot of us last week. This was a wake-up call to get over and get past what we think is holding us back or keeping us from being used by God and to start believing that we can be a part of what He s doing. C. Maybe you all left last time feeling totally energized. Maybe you left excited and encouraged to find out what God is doing and where He is working. But then you realized you didn t know what to do next. You get that you are able to play a part, but now what? How exactly do you figure out what comes next? How do you figure out what God is saying? TENSION A. The phrases God s will, God s plan and God s purpose are thrown around in church a lot. And these phrases have come to mean a lot of different things especially in the church world. Some of you may hear those words and think one thing, and someone else might hear them and think something totally different. Or all of you may hear those words and just be confused. Essentially, when we say God has a plan, a plan that we learned last week we are invited into and are able to participate in, we mean a couple of things. But for a lot of us, just hearing the phrase creates more than just confusion. It could be we feel a little sense of panic. We aren t exactly sure what the phrase means. We get the feeling it is important, but we have no idea how to decipher its meaning! B. There is a stage little kids go through as they are just learning to talk that is one of my favorites to watch. Around age one, kids become like sponges: They pick up on everything, including things you and I may not normally pay any attention to. One of their more entertaining traits at this time is when they talk total and complete nonsense just babbling but do voice inflections, going high and low, sounding like they are asking questions or making exclamations. And the whole time they are babbling, they look you directly in the eye as if you should understand every word that comes out of their mouths. It s so entertaining! It is almost like they believe you are having a conversation together and they expect you to respond when they stop talking. It can be hilarious to observe but also frustrating. Because sometimes these toddlers really do want something, and they think they are making sense and you should be able to understand them! But for those listening, while we may want to help out this struggling kid, we have no idea what to do or how to appease them.

TEACHING SCRIPT Pg. 2 C. In the same way, sometimes trying to figure out what God wants us to do, what God s plan is for us, feels just as complicated. We want to participate, we want to hear Him, but there just don t seem to be any clues anywhere about what that might look like. So the tendency is to do one of two things: We either give up and forget about it, or we go crazy. We look for signs and direction everywhere because we aren t exactly sure what we should be looking for, so anything and everything could be a sign. TRUTH A. See, when it comes to Scripture, or the Bible, a lot of us believe that it is just supposed to be complicated when it comes to figuring out what we re supposed to do when it comes to participating in God s picture for the world. Sort of like walking through a labyrinth with complicated and never-ending options and dead ends. We think there has to be an element of mystery involved. In fact, when it comes to God s will specifically, a lot of Christians tend to look towards the more uncommon and unusual stories. Have you ever heard of a guy named Gideon? Or have you heard of the phrase Gideon s fleece? His story tends to be used a lot, for whatever reason, as inspiration for how to determine what God wants of us. B. Gideon is a guy whose story is found in the Old Testament book of Judges, one of the more obscure Old Testament books, and his story only makes up two chapters of it. Judges happens during a time in Israel s story when there were no kings yet, so these people called judges were considered the ruling authority. During the time when the book of Judges was written, there were cycles of sin and obedience within Israel. This means that sometimes God s people got the vision God had for them and followed it, and sometimes they ignored what God wanted and did their own thing. And the time we pick up on Gideon s story is during a time of sin. As a result of their sin, God allowed neighboring groups of people to oppress the Israelites. These people ruined the Israelite s crops. They ravaged the land. They made life miserable for all the people of Israel. C. And in the middle of all this, an angel of the Lord appears to a man named Gideon. And Gideon is just a normal guy. The angel approaches him when he is threshing wheat just kind of working the land. Gideon isn t famous. He isn t powerful. He isn t exactly a member of the A Team. He is just plain average. But what this angel of God says to Gideon gives a totally different impression. This angel tells Gideon that through him God will strike down the Midianites, the people who are oppressing the Israelites. But Gideon has a hard time taking the angel of God at his word. Judges says it this way: Gideon said to God, If you will save Israel by my hand as you have promised look I will place a wool fleece on the threshing floor. If there is dew only on the fleece and all the ground is dry, then I will know that you will save Israel by my hand, as you said. And that is what happened. Gideon rose early the next day; he squeezed the fleece and wrung out the dew a bowlful of water (Judges 6:36-38 NIV). D. See, Gideon is a lot like us. He just wants some clarity concerning what to do. But doesn t Gideon seem a little, well, slow to you? I mean God spells out for Gideon what He wants him to do, and Gideon doesn t believe God. He wants a sign. And it is kind of funny to read, but before we are so quick to judge Gideon, we might want to take a minute and look at ourselves. What if our story is more like Gideon s than we would like to admit? What if we too like to depend on a sign, like the idea of putting out a fleece in hopes of having complete clarity from God?

TEACHING SCRIPT Pg. 3 Some of you may be sitting here thinking, Um, I have never had an angel show up and tell me to do something. Never. So my story is nothing like Gideon s. Okay, maybe so, and I haven t had that happen to me either. But what if we don t need an angel to show up to tell us how to live? What if there was something we were given that was just as clear? E. Think of it this way. Have any of you ever had to put something together? Maybe it was some sort of toy for a younger brother or sister, or maybe it was a piece of furniture that needed to be assembled. Most of the time these things that need building come with something really handy: instructions. Now I will be the first to admit I don t like to follow instructions. I am too impatient to read through each detailed step and try to find each labeled piece. I would rather just go with my gut. It seems like the better plan at least on the front end. But it doesn t usually go the way I want. See, I know I have the instructions. I just pretend I don t need them. But it would be really stupid to sit there with all of these parts and pieces laid out in front of me, holding the instructions in my hands, and start complaining, I just don t know how to do this! If only I had some direction on where to get started! I wish I knew how all of these pieces went together and where to begin. All I want is some clarity, for someone to tell me how to make this work. If I ever did this, someone would have complete permission to slap me upside the head and tell me I am being an idiot. I would have no right to complain when the answer is at my fingertips. If I want to know what to do, all I have to do is read the instructions. F. But essentially this is what we do when it comes to trying to figure out God s picture. We act like Gideon. He wanted a sign even though the angel of the Lord told him what he was supposed to do. We want signs even though we also are told what to do. We have our direct message, and it comes in the form of Scripture. All over the pages of the Bible we find God s plan for us, God s purpose for us. It may not be labeled with our name, but for anyone who follows Jesus, the picture is the same. Here are some examples. Take time out to rest (Exodus 20:8-10). Be cautious in your friendships (Proverbs 12:26). Be careful in how you use your speech (Ecclesiastes 5:6). Take care of those who need it (Isaiah 58:7). Love your enemies (Matthew 5:44). Love God and love people (Mark 12:30-31). Show mercy, do not judge and do not condemn. Forgive (Luke 6:36-37). Make every effort to live peaceful, pure and blameless lives (2 Peter 3:14). Be imitators of God (Ephesians 5:1). Don t be anxious (Philippians 4:6). G. So there we have it spelled out for us. But these things aren t things we do just for the sake of doing them. These things aren t things we do just because we are told to do them. These are part of the smaller picture when it comes to God s plan, but they are also part of the bigger picture.

TEACHING SCRIPT Pg. 4 God has a big-picture idea for what He wants to happen, for what He wants to unfold in the world. This big-picture plan can be understood as the same for every person on the planet. God wants to make the world right again. God wants to restore what has been broken by sin, starting all the way back at our beginning in the garden of Eden. God wants healing. God wants justice. God wants us to be involved in helping put right a very broken and disjointed world. Second Corinthians 5:18-19 says it this way: All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ (NIV). In other words, God has a plan to make the strained relationship between Him and the world right to bring the world back into His favor, to let the world see His extensive and far-reaching grace that is able to make the world right again. H. But there s even more to it than that. See, God, all-knowing and all-powerful, has a specific understanding of how the world will unfold. We believe He knows what each day holds. We believe He sees what is happening here with us right now but also what is happening halfway around the world. He sees tomorrow, and He sees 50 years from now. And He knows what tomorrow and every day after will hold. This is God s big-picture plan. Scripture says it like this: Remember the former things, those of long ago; I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me. I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say: My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please (Isaiah 46:9-10 NIV). And we can work at participating in His big-picture plan of restoring the world knowing that while we should do what we can to accomplish God s goal, only God knows the day-in and day-out details. APPLICATION A. God wants to reconcile the world to Himself; He wants to be reunited with a broken and hurting world. And we play a part in that by obeying and being a part of the very specific desires He has for us as believers and participators in His big picture. This is the big picture and the small picture we can participate in all of us no matter who we are or where we have been. God is asking all of us to be involved. B. It could be that you and I and followers of Jesus anywhere make things too complicated when it comes to figuring out what God wants from us, what it means to be participators with Him in the world. And I have to wonder if sometimes God is watching us and thinking we look pretty ridiculous. It could be that God observes us being unsure about what to do with our lives, how we are supposed to live, how we are supposed to participate with Him and His activity, while waving around the very instructions He gave us. It could be that a lot of what we need we already have access to, and it is just a matter of us taking the necessary steps to start living. C. No, the Bible was not meant to be treated simply as a rulebook, as if that is its only purpose. It isn t a textbook, and it doesn t contain a magic formula to solve every single issue or answer every single question you have ever had. The Bible is not that. But the Bible is the story of God, the story of the God who desires the best for His people and His creation. While it s not a rule book, it does give us insight into choices and decisions we can make that will help advance God s great story. There is a right way to live. There are certain choices we can make that allow us to be better participators and make us better followers of God. And the guidance we need to make those decisions and choices is at our fingertips. Want to know how to live? Look in God s Word. Look in His story. Read it. Take it in. And then make it a lifestyle.

TEACHING SCRIPT Pg. 5 D. This is a message for all of us. God is asking all of us to participate with Him in showing the world what He desires of it. When we choose to live the way He asks of us, we are following His will and we are showing others what living in a way that honors God and His authority looks like. E. So what does this mean for you? It means we probably need to start getting more diligent about the time we spend reading Scripture. If we want to know how to live, if we want to be on board with God s purpose, then maybe we need to do a better job of knowing God. Read the Bible. Read it with the intention of learning more about what God cares about. And then begin to be intentional about making what you read a reality in your life. Do you need more rest? Then eliminate an activity and give yourself a few hours where you can simply be still. Do you need to do a better job of taking care of people who need help? Volunteer hours at a local shelter. Donate clothes, books or old toys to a place that can pass them along to people who need them. Do you need to work on forgiveness? Start praying through your hurt, your pain and the people you have held grudges against for too long. F. And when you begin to do this, do you know what you are doing? You are participating in God s big-picture plan for the world. You are working with Him to accomplish His purposes. You may be like Gideon in that you are just a kid and maybe an average kid at that. But you don t have to wait like Gideon did for a sign. You simply need to start doing what has been asked of you. LANDING A. Let s stop being lazy about it and start digging into the Word. We don t need to wait for God to write in the sky or speak in the night or send an angel to speak on our behalf. We just need to know His Word well enough to know what it asks of us. And then we need to start doing it. [TRANSITION INTO SMALL GROUPS]
