I m glad you re here. It s a brand-new month, which means a brand-new Life App. This month, we re talking about... CG: Misspelled Initiative Slide (Realizing the slide is misspelled) Uh... in-i-ta-ta-tive? Oops. That s not quite right. That s supposed to say initiative. Can we try that again? (To the tech team) Thanks, guys! Raise your hand if you ve ever seen something that needed to be done and then you did it. (Raise your hand.) Yeah! All of us have to do some jobs sometimes. And sometimes those jobs are downright dirty jobs things we don t really WANT to do. But you know what? SOMEBODY s got to do them. When we see something that isn t the way it should be, we have a choice to make. We can ignore it and pretend it doesn t exist, OR we can take the initiative to fix it! 3 things in this room that need to be fixed. There are 10 that I ve got here on my card. (Hold up answer card.) Can you get them all? Here s a card and a pen for each Leader to write down your answers." Point to the leaders' seats. Have pens and index cards at the leaders' seats before they come in so they're ready to go. I ll give you a minute to come up with as many as you can. Ready? GO! SFX: Bring up smooth jazz music Give the groups 60 seconds to write down their answers. All right! Listen close, because I m about to read off the answers. If I say one that you ve got on your card, circle it and then we ll total them up at the end. Here s my list of things that need to be done! Note: Be sure to move quickly through these answers so the Opener doesn t go too long. One: My shoe is untied. Can someone help me with that? (Bring up an older kid to tie your shoe while you continue.) Two: I don t think this chair is supposed to be upside down. Can someone fix that, please? (Bring a kid up to turn the chair right side up.) Three: This lamp is out. (Point to the floor lamp on stage.) Who can fix that? (Bring up a kid and hand him the light bulb.) Four: There s fast food trash next to the trash can. (To kids sitting next to the trash can.) Can you guys take care of that? Five: This picture is a little crooked, isn t it? Who wants to make it straight? (Bring up a kid to make the picture straight.) Six: What about this clock? I don t think it s really 3:36 a.m. Can I get a Leader up here to set it, please? (Bring up a Leader to set the clock.) Seven: We re doing great! How about this pile of confetti on the ground? Who can sweep it up? (Bring up a kid to sweep it up.) Eight. (Look at the mini Christmas tree.) Hmmm... it s not Christmas quite yet. Can someone please box this up so we can store it? (Bring a kid up to put the tree in a box.) Nine: I m really thirsty. SFX: Any track from the Every Beat CD (or any other song that sounds like what you d normally play in your environment) That s more like it! All right, did anyone get all ten answers? How about nine? (Keep going until you get a winner or winners.) We could have ignored all those things that were messed up. But we worked together to fix them. Way to go! Now everyone stand up, because it s time to sing to God and tell Him how much we love Him. WORSHIP WORSHIP LEADER: Yes! Get up on your feet, everybody, because it s time for us to sing praises to our amazing God! He s at work in each of our lives. I want to live to the full potential of who God made me to be. Let s sing about living Fully Alive. Come on. Sing it loud with me! If you have asked Jesus to come into your heart and have been baptized, you will come up and take a cracker and juice. This isn't the time for laughing or talking. This is time to remember what Jesus did for us on the cross. If you haven't been baptized, take this time to pray to God. 5 The king even sent army officers and horsemen to travel with Nehemiah and keep him safe along the way! God had given Nehemiah everything he needed; now he was ready to tackle the biggest job of his life. CG: Bottom Line Slide Be on the lookout for what needs to be done. That s what Nehemiah did. That s what we can do, too. Instead of waiting to be asked to do something, we can use our eyes and ears to notice the things around us that need to be done. Then we can [Basic Truth] make the wise choice and jump into action! We need God s help to do that, don t we? God can give us the courage we need to do what needs to be done. Let s talk to Him about that now. CG: Blank Bottom Line Slide PRAY STORYTELLER: God, we know that You can work through us in big ways. We know there are so many things around us that aren t the way they should be. Help us to SEE those things. Help us not to ignore them, but to be brave enough to DO something about them. Help us to be like Nehemiah and rely on You to lead the way. Help us to be on the lookout always for the things that need to be done. We love You, and we pray in Jesus name, amen The rethink Group. 6 CLOSER HOST: It seems so simple, doesn t it? CG: Bottom Line Slide Be on the lookout for what needs to be done. Let s be real, though. It s hard for us to remember to do that. It s a lot easier to think about whatever WE RE doing in that moment, instead of looking around to see where we might be able to help. But there are ALWAYS things that need to be done all around us! For Nehemiah, it was something really big. He heard about the broken-down walls and gates in Jerusalem, and it wasn t enough for him to just be sad about it. He prayed to God and asked God to help him take on the massive challenge of rebuilding the city. For you, it might be helping your mom or dad fold laundry, picking your wet towel off the floor and putting it on the hook, clearing the dishes after dinner, or rolling the trash can down to the curb. Maybe when you hear someone complain about something or someone asks for help you can stop and think of ways you could help them. You can also pray, like Nehemiah did, and ask God to give you what you need to take on the challenge. Look and listen. Keep an eye out for the things around you that need to be done. Don t wait for someone to have to tell you to do those things. Take initiative! Be on the lookout for what needs to be done. You know what else is really cool about Nehemiah s story? He put his HEART into it. He was really sad about Jerusalem, and that s what made him take initiative. Don t just do things because you re supposed to. Do them with all your heart. It s like what Paul wrote in our memory verse for this month: Colossians 3:23. CG: Blank Memory Verse Slide CG: Memory Verse Slide Work at everything you do with all your heart.
