If your Large Group and Small Group environments share the same space, tape painter s tape down on either side of your course so kids know where to sit. NOTE: Feel free to add steps to this workout, just be sure to update the script and the cue card for the Host. Write down the steps of the workout on an index card. Thanks for coming out to the [your environment s name] United Football Club. Our team is the best because we re all about HUMILITY! Not that I m bragging, of course. CG: Humility Slide So what is humility? It s putting others first by giving up what you think you deserve. That can be pretty tough though, right? It s too easy to go around thinking about what WE want, what WE think is fair, and what WE deserve. But God has a different plan. He wants us to put other people FIRST and show them what His love looks like. All month long, we ve been on the soccer field and checking out how you can t win the game if you don t let someone else get some of the glory. Now, if you re a soccer player or any sports player, really who is the person who can help you know how to win? (Pause for response.) That s right your coach. You ve got to be humble enough to take your coach s instruction, because nobody wants to be a diva on the field or during practice. In fact, I think we should take a look at some players who maybe lost their focus a bit. Check this out. VIDEO: Soccer own goals Yikes! Maybe they should have listened a little more carefully to their coach! And that s what we re going to practice for today s competition. Let me get two contestants up here. Bring up two kids. Two Worship Leaders (or Small Group Leaders) enter as well. (To contestants) Okay, I m going to lead you two through a series of drills. If you re going to win this, you have to be humble enough to listen to your coach a.k.a. me. There can only be one winner, and that will be the one who follows my instructions the BEST. Cool? Cool. I know you can do it! All right! I will now list off your instructions. There are five steps to this workout routine. You can do them in any order you want, but you will only have 60 seconds. Whoever does the most steps from the list in those 60 seconds will be the champion. The leaders here will be our judges. They ll keep track of how many you get. Here are the steps. Host reads the steps off the card: 1. Do 10 jumping jacks. 2. Zigzag the ball through the cones. 3. Bark like a seal for 10 seconds. 4. Jump rope 10 times. 5. Kick the ball into the goal on stage. 6 All right, this is going to be crazy! Ready, set, go! SFX: High-energy music SFX: Buzzer (after 60 seconds) Host quickly asks the Worship Leaders/SGL how many steps each contestant achieved. (To contestants) Wow. You were both amazing! And the results are in. After talking with our judges, we have [kid s name] in second place, with [number] steps and [kid s name], our champion, with [number] steps! Way to go! Dismiss kids to their seats. Leaders can exit. Ahhhh, yes. I love firing up my team and getting you game ready. In today s story, you ll get to hear one of the biggest pep talks of all time. And trust me, it s not just talk. Now go ahead and stand up, everybody, because we re about to SING to God and get loud in here! Worship Leaders enter as Host exits. WORSHIP WORSHIP LEADER: Yeah, get yourself ready because it is time for us to make our praises heard. We need to let this world know about the love of Jesus and how our God saves. Say that with me. Our God saves. (Repeat a couple times as needed.) All right, let s sing this! SFX: Let It Be Known / track 5 from Movin Me We lift up God s praises because He does save. As we continue to sing today don t hold anything back. Jesus wants all of us not just parts of us. He wants us to live for His glory with all we have. So let s use this time to give all we are to going God s way. This is a newer song we taught you earlier this month. Let s rock it out together now. SFX: Go / track 13 from Alive Yeah! John 14:6 says: Jesus answered, I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me (NIrV). The way to life is through Jesus. 7 SETTING UP THE TELLER: Hey, guys! So last week we talked about what Jesus did at Easter and how He died on the cross for our sins. But He didn t say dead, did He? That s right! He came back to life three days later. It s the most amazing story ever, and it really happened! One thing that we don t hear about as often is what happened right after Jesus came back to life. It wasn t like He just went up to heaven right away and that was it. He actually APPEARED to His friends a bunch of times to prove that He was alive! APPEARANCES TELLER: The first time He showed up was a time that we mentioned last week. See if you can guess it. The disciples were... CG: Question Slide 1 a. Making pancakes b. Doing the Macarena c. Hiding with the doors locked d. Marching through the streets CG: Answer Slide 1 Pause for response. Yeah, they were hiding! They were terrified because of what had happened to Jesus. But then Jesus actually appeared in the same room with them, even though the door was locked! Can you imagine that? He said (open Bible and read John 20:19): May peace be with you (NIrV). He ate with the disciples and showed them the wounds in His hands and side to let them know He was real. He also reminded His friends that everything He had done on earth was part of God s plan to rescue His people. He was the Messiah, who was sent to suffer and die and then come back to life. But Jesus also made it clear the story was just beginning. Now, there was one disciple who wasn t there for that first time when Jesus showed up. That disciple s name was... CG: Question Slide 2 a. 8 CG: Answer Slide 1 You are correct! Thomas needed proof. It sounded too good to be true that Jesus could be ALIVE. He said, I need to see the nail marks for myself! That s the only way I ll believe! And a week later, Jesus appeared again. This time, Thomas got to see Him with his own eyes. And he realized that it really was true: Jesus was alive! Jesus continued to show up for His friends over more than a month. He taught them more about God and His ways, and later He even told Peter where to catch fish. The same day Jesus showed Peter where to catch fish, He also shared a meal with some of His friends. Was it... CG: Question Slide 3 a. A luau b. Breakfast on the beach c. A picnic on a hill d. Taco Tuesday CG: Answer Slide 3 Pause for response. The correct answer is breakfast on the beach! JESUS GIVES DISCIPLES INSTRUCTIONS TELLER: After 40 days, Peter and Thomas and the others climbed the Mount of Olives to see Jesus again. They were all eating together. As they were gathered around Him, they asked Him a question. CG: Question Slide 4 a. Are You going to take over and become Israel s king? b. Why is the sky blue? c. Did You bring any snacks? d. How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood? CG: Answer Slide 4 Pause for response. Yeah, I m thinking A. Here s what Jesus told them (read Acts 1:7-8): You should not be concerned about times or dates. The Father has set them by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you. Then you will tell people about me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria. And you will even tell other people about me from one end of the earth to the other (NIrV). PAGE 8

9 Now, think about that. These guys didn t have planes or cars or even bikes! And Jesus was telling them they would tell the entire WORLD about Him? Whoa! ASCENSION TELLER: And then, right before their eyes, Jesus began rising from the ground, up toward heaven. They continued to watch until a cloud hid Him from their sight. And as they stared up into the sky, two somethings dressed in white appeared beside them. Any guesses as to who appeared? CG: Question Slide 5 a. Wildebeests b. Police officers c. Doctors d. Angels CG: Answer Slide 1 Pause for response. Yep, it was angels. The angels told them (read Acts 1:11): Men of Galilee,... why do you stand here looking at the sky? Jesus has been taken away from you into heaven. But he will come back in the same way you saw him go (NIrV). WRAPPING UP THE TELLER: Jesus had given His friends a really big job! Because even though He took the time to appear to them and prove He was alive, the time Jesus spent with them wasn t just about the disciples. It was to help prepare them to tell ALL of the people who needed to hear about Jesus all over the world. The disciples had their marching orders. What mattered most was doing what Jesus had told them to do. And they could do it through God s power! For the rest of their lives, Jesus followers would set aside their own plans. They dedicated their days to sharing the story of Jesus with everyone they met, both close to home and far from it. Let s take a look at the Bottom Line for today. CG: Bottom Line Slide [Bottom Line] I can put others first by doing what Jesus said. Jesus challenge wasn t just for His disciples all those years go, but we also can take Jesus challenge as His followers today. We can share the amazing news about Jesus by telling other people about the difference He s made in our lives. We can also SHOW it by acting in a way that honors Him. When we act with humility and put others first, people notice. They see something different about us, in a good way. Let s pray and thank God for the opportunity to join Him in changing the world. Let s ask Him for some help, because this is a HUGE job to get done! PAGE 9

10 PRAY TELLER: God, it s so cool to hear about how the disciples got to see Jesus after He rose from the dead. We want to be like them and show what a difference You ve made in our lives. Please help us to put Your words into practice. Help us to show love to others by putting them first. We love You and we ask these things in Jesus name, amen. Host enters. Storyteller exits. CLOSER HOST: The mission Jesus gave His disciples? AMAZING! Jesus told His friends to spend the rest of their lives pointing others to Him: their neighbors, people they met in town, people in other cities, and even people in the most faraway places they could imagine! That s our mission, too! Telling people about God and showing them how Jesus lived is an incredible way you can put others first. But you put others first ANY time that you live out the things Jesus told His followers. When someone hurts you, and you choose not to hurt them back, you re putting others first. When you comfort someone who is sad or sick, you re putting others first. When you make peace between two of your friends who are fighting, you re putting others first. When you take time to pray for someone, you re putting others first. That s why this is the most important thing to remember today: CG: Bottom Line [Bottom Line] I can put others first by doing what Jesus said. When you follow Jesus and the things He s told us to do, you ll start to put others first without even thinking about it. And in my book, that s a win! You guys are going to talk about that some more in Small Group. And it s about that time! See you next week! Host dismisses children to their small groups.
