3 15 MINUTES 1. HIT IT WHAT YOU NEED: Rhythm sticks MOVE an activity that uses a preschooler s natural desire to move to help them learn BEFORE THE ACTIVITY: Guide the children to stand in front of you. DURING THE ACTIVITY: Ask the children to listen closely to how many times you hit the sticks together. Then give them a movement to do the number of times that you hit the sticks. (For example: You hit the sticks three times and the movement is jump. The children should jump three times.) Only hit the sticks one through five times. Do not hit the sticks more than five times. Movements are: clap, jump, stomp, spin, pat head, and touch toes. Repeat several times. BEFORE THE ACTIVITY: We are going to use our ears today. (Cup ears.) DURING THE ACTIVITY: I am going to hit these sticks together (hold up) and I want you to listen closely so that you can hear how many times I hit them. Let s practice. (Hit the sticks twice.) How many times did I hit the sticks? (Pause.) YES! I hit them two times! Now I am going to do it again. This time, listen to how many times I hit them and you clap the same amount of times. Are you ready? (Do activity.) AFTER THE ACTIVITY: Great job! You are really good listeners! Today in our Bible story, we are going to hear about a man who could not hear and needed help. I cannot wait to find out who helped him! TRANSITION: Move to Worship and Story by inviting the children to listen and identify sounds that they hear as you walk to the story area The ReThink Group. 4 15 MINUTES PLAY an activity that encourages preschoolers to follow guidelines while having fun and learning new concepts 2. WHAT S THAT SOUND? WHAT YOU NEED: Eight aluminum pie plates, tape, popped popcorn, Cheerios, rice, dry beans, and the boxes or containers these food items came in BEFORE THE ACTIVITY: Put a handful of each of the following items inside two aluminum pie plates and tape together to create a shaker: popped popcorn, Cheerios, rice, and dry beans. Label each of the four shakers with the first letter of each item so you know for sure what is inside each one. Place the boxes the four items came in close by to help the children identify what s inside the shakers. DURING THE ACTIVITY: Gather the children around the table. Show the children the four food boxes. Let the children take turns shaking the shakers to try to identify what s inside. BEFORE THE ACTIVITY: Using just our sense of hearing today, I want to see if you can name the items inside these shakers. (Point.) DURING THE ACTIVITY: Do you see these food containers? (Point.) Can you name the food found inside each one? (Pause for responses.) Awesome! Inside each of these shakers we have popcorn or rice or beans or Cheerios. Since we cannot see or touch or taste what s inside, we ll have to use our sense of hearing to figure out what s inside. (Do activity.) AFTER THE ACTIVITY: Wow! Great job, friends! You put on your listening ears for sure. Let s make sure we keep them on so we can hear our Bible story for today. Our story is about someone who cannot use his ears. TRANSITION: Move to Worship and Story by making different animal sounds as children name the animal. Examples: moo like a cow; bark like a dog; meow like a cat; oink like a pig; neigh like a horse; quack like a duck; cluck like a chicken; roar like a lion, cheep like a bird; hee-haw like a donkey; buzz like a bee; ribbit like a frog; gobble like a turkey; baa like a sheep The ReThink Group. 5 15 MINUTES IMAGINE an activity that lets preschoolers pretend, imagine, and role play to enhance their learning 3. SORT IT AT THE MARKET WHAT YOU NEED: The Market center should be the same set up as Week One. You will also need the Food Drive Parent Note Activity Page used during the Week One activity and a Donate Bag for any parent who did not receive one during Week One. DURING THE ACTIVITY: Invite the children to join you as you sort the grocery items into small grocery baskets. You can sort the items in several different ways: 1. Fruit and veggie items 2. Meat and non-meat items 3. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner items 4. Things that are in a box and things that are not (Ex: cereal box and an orange) BEFORE THE ACTIVITY: Hey, friends! I have a question to ask you. (Pause.) Can you help me sort all of these groceries? (Point.) I need to get all of the fruit items in this basket and all of the veggie items in this basket. Can you help me do that? DURING THE ACTIVITY: You are amazing sorters! Way to go! (High fives for everyone.) Now do you think you can help me sort the meat items into this basket (point) and the things that are not meat into this basket (point)? Can you help me do that? (Repeat this each time you begin a new way of sorting the grocery items.) AFTER THE ACTIVITY: I am SO glad I asked you to help me! It was more fun sorting with friends too. We should always ask for help when we need it. Our Bible story today is about a man who asked Jesus for help. Let s go listen and see what happens. TRANSITION: Move to Worship and Story by sorting the children as they line up. For example: first everyone in a blue shirt lines up, then everyone in tennis shoes, etc The ReThink Group. 6 HEAR FROM GOD REVIEW MOVE an activity that uses a preschooler s natural desire to move to help them learn 1. SILENT WHAT YOU NEED: No supplies needed DURING THE ACTIVITY: Say the memory verse and do the following motions in front of the children. You are (point up) everything (hands out to sides) I need (point thumbs to chest), Psalm 119:57. (Open your hands like a book.) After you ve reviewed the verse a couple of times, repeat again, but this time, only do the motions no sound! Repeat again with the words and motions. Repeat again with just the motions. Continue as long as interest holds. DURING THE ACTIVITY: Let s say our memory verse with the motions together. (Pause.) Great job! Now let s just do the motions we ve learned without saying the words of the verse. (Repeat as desired.) AFTER THE ACTIVITY: It was a little more challenging to perform the motions without actually speaking the words, wasn t it? (Pause.) It would be hard to not be able to hear like the man in our Bible story today. He needed to ask Jesus for help. We need to ask Jesus for help sometimes, too. 7 TALK ABOUT GOD REVIEW IMAGINE an activity that lets preschoolers pretend, imagine, and role play to enhance their learning 2. HEAR WHAT YOU NEED: No supplies needed BEFORE THE ACTIVITY: Guide the children to sit in front of you. Ask them to place their hands over their ears. DURING THE ACTIVITY: Tell the Bible story. When you are finished, ask the children to remove their hands and ask them if they heard the story. Instruct the children to place their hands in their laps. Retell the Bible story again. BEFORE THE ACTIVITY: We heard a Bible story about a man who could not hear. Place your hands over your ears like this. (Demonstrate.) DURING THE ACTIVITY: Keep your hands over your ears. There was a man who could not hear, and his friends knew he needed Jesus help. They took him to Jesus, and Jesus put His fingers into the man s ears and then the man could hear! WOW! Now please place your hands into your lap. (Demonstrate.) Did you hear the story that I just told? (Pause.) You could not hear it very well because you had your hands over your ears. This is how the man felt. At first he could not hear very well, but then Jesus helped him and he could hear! Now let s hear the story again where we can all really HEAR it! (Finish activity.) AFTER THE ACTIVITY: The man in the story really needed Jesus and asked Him for help. We can ask Jesus for help too! We ALL need Jesus! Who do you need? I need Jesus! 2018 The ReThink Group. 8 LIVE FOR GOD APPLICATION ACTIVITY THINK an advanced activity specifically designed for older preschoolers 3. SIGN IT WHAT YOU NEED: No supplies needed DURING THE ACTIVITY: Teach children the ASL sign language for the phrases: I need Jesus and Jesus loves me. I Make a fist. Raise your pinky straight up. need Make an upward hook with the index finger and bring it down. Jesus Touch the middle finger of your dominant hand into the palm of your non-dominant hand. Then touch the middle finger of your non-dominant hand into the middle of your dominant hand. Jesus Touch the middle finger of your dominant hand into the palm of your non-dominant hand. Then touch the middle finger of your non-dominant hand into the middle of your dominant hand. loves Cross both your hands over the middle of your chest. me Point to yourself. Practice these sayings a few times with the children. DURING THE ACTIVITY: Have you ever seen someone using sign language? People who cannot hear learn this special language to help them have conversations. Today I want to teach you the sign language for I need Jesus and Jesus loves me. (Do activity.) AFTER THE ACTIVITY: Awesome job, my friends! People who cannot hear need Jesus. People who can hear need Jesus. We ALL need Jesus! Who do you need? 2018 The ReThink Group. All rights reserved. 8

9 LIVE FOR GOD APPLICATION ACTIVITY MOVE an activity that uses a preschooler s natural desire to move to help them learn 4. FREEZE DANCE WHAT YOU NEED: Music player and the monthly song BEFORE THE ACTIVITY: Guide the children to stand in front of you. DURING THE ACTIVITY: Turn the music on and ask the children to dance. After about 30 seconds, turn off the music and ask the children to stand very still or FREEZE. Replay the music and ask the children to dance again. Repeat the activity several times in 30-second increments. BEFORE THE ACTIVITY: We are going to dance, but we have to really use our ears to know what to do. DURING THE ACTIVITY: I am going to turn on our song for this month. When you HEAR the music, start to dance. When you HEAR the music stop, FREEZE. (Demonstrate.) Are you ready? (Do the activity.) AFTER THE ACTIVITY: You did a good job listening! The man in our Bible story needed Jesus, and so do we. I need Jesus! 2018 The ReThink Group. All rights reserved. 9

10 LIVE FOR GOD APPLICATION ACTIVITY CREATE an activity that allows preschoolers to review the Bible story, bottom line, or memory verse by creating a craft to take home 5. PUT ON THOSE LISTENING EARS WHAT YOU NEED: Paper plates (one per child), Ears and Ear Label Activity Pages, white cardstock, Avery #5160 labels or equivalent, scissors, chenille stems (one per child), crayons, glue sticks, and clear tape BEFORE THE ACTIVITY: Copy the Ears Activity Page onto cardstock and cut apart. Provide one set of ears per child. Copy the Ear Label Activity Page onto label paper. Provide one label per child. Cut the paper plates in half. Set the chenille stems, crayons, and glue sticks in the center of the table. DURING THE ACTIVITY: Give each child a set of ears to color and then glue onto the two halves of a paper plate. Place a label on one of the paper plate halves. Help them tape the chenille stems to the back of the two halves of the plates to create a headband so they can wear their ears. When finished, encourage the children to put on their listening ears. BEFORE THE ACTIVITY: Today we re going to create a special set of listening ears. DURING THE ACTIVITY: Let s color our ears and then glue them onto the paper plate halves. Once the ears are glued on we can add our label. Then we ll tape this (hold up the chenille stem) to them so you can wear them. AFTER THE ACTIVITY: Your ears look amazing! The man in our story asked Jesus to fix his ears so he could hear. He needed Jesus, and we need Jesus, too. Tell me: 2018 The ReThink Group. All rights reserved. 10

11 PRAY TO GOD PRAYER ACTIVITY REFLECT an activity that encourages personal application and prayer 6. JOURNAL AND PRAYER WHAT YOU NEED: Paperclip Memory Verse Card in your Bible at Psalm 119:57. Provide a journal and a fun-shaped pen for each small group. SMALL GROUP LEADER (SGL): It s Small Group time. (Pick a child to be your leader.) [Child s name], will you help us find our Small Group spot? (Pause.) Everyone, follow [child s name]! [He/she] is going to help us find our Small Group spot. (Encourage the other children to follow the leader to your Small Group spot.) We made it! Thanks for your help, [child s name]. Let s sit down and talk about today s Bible story now. One, two, three, sit down with me! (Open the Bible and lay it open in front of the children.) Our Bible story today was about a man who couldn t hear or talk. His friends asked Jesus to help him. What did Jesus do? (Pause.) Yes! Jesus helped the man and made his ears able to hear and his mouth able to talk. It was amazing! What do you think would have happened if the friends had not asked Jesus for help? (Pause.) You re right. If the friends had not asked Jesus for help, the man s ears and mouth would not have gotten better. Jesus knows we need Him. CHILDREN AND SGL: SGL: And that s why Jesus wants us to ask Him for help. He knows we need Him to do things only He can do! Hopefully, the Bible verse we are learning will help us remember to ask Jesus for help because we need Him. (Turn the pages of your Bible to the Memory Verse Card.) It says: You are everything I need, Psalm 119: The ReThink Group. All rights reserved. 11

12 PRAY TO GOD PRAYER ACTIVITY REFLECT an activity that encourages personal application and prayer (Close Bible and lay it down.) Let s stand up and say that verse together with the motions. CHILDREN AND SGL: You are (point up) everything (hands out to sides) I need (point thumbs to chest), Psalm 119:57. (Open your hands like a book.) (Repeat the verse with motions a few times.) SGL: You sound awesome! Do you know why Jesus is everything we need? Jesus has the power to do anything! So, if we have Jesus, we have everything we need. Let s sit down and write in our prayer journal now. (Hold journal and fun-shaped pen.) I think we should ask Jesus for help in our prayer journal today. When I say your name, tell me one thing you need Jesus to help you with and I will write it in our prayer journal. (Say and write each child s name and what they say beside it.) This is a very special list. Let s talk to God about it now. Would anyone like to pray before I pray? (Give each child who wants to pray the opportunity to do so.) PRAYER SGL: Dear God, thank You for giving us Jesus to help us. I pray we will ask Jesus to help us when we need it, like when we need help to forgive or to tell the truth or be kind to someone who isn t being kind to us.
