Attention Singles Picnic in the Park Sunday, May 20 th, following worship Bring your lunch and a lawn chair. Drinks and dessert will be provided. We will move to Battery Park following worship. 12 Urban Promise Summer Camp Supplies This summer Urban Promise will be providing summer camp programs for the children of Wilmington. We can help by providing arts and crafts supplies and playground equipment. Please look for the poster displaying the list of needs and take a "post-it" shopping list and bring the item/s on your list back to the CE Building during the month of May. Most of these items can be found at Happy Harry's, A.C. Moore, Toys-R-Us or Kmart. Cash donations can also be given to Janet Spring if would like to participate but cannot get to the store. We will also be collecting empty gallon milk and juice jugs for use at the camp. Please rinse them out and put them in the collection box in the CE Building. Thank you for your support of this very worthwhile cause. If you want to read more about Urban Promise, check out the articles on the Mission Bulletin board in the CE Building. On July 15th we will also be serving dinner to the counselors of Urban Promise. Many of these young people come from all over the world to work for Urban Promise and their youth summer camp program. There will be a sign-up sheet in June for anyone interested in helping cook and serve a meal for these dedicated young people.

14 I REMEMBER WHEN Until I was six years old, my family, Hopkins, lived on a dairy farm that became part of the New Castle Airbase during World War II. During those years, my grandparents, John and Florence Hopkins, attended New Castle Presbyterian Church. Among their friends were Chandler and Mary Gebhart. When the government purchased their land, my parents moved their dairy business to Hare's Corner. On Sundays, my father worked and my mother did not drive, so neither attended church. They did think that it was important that their children attend Sunday School. Although Dad was Scots Presbyterian and Mom was Polish Catholic, they decided to put us on the school bus that came by to take us to the Baptist Sunday School. It was great and I liked going. We even had a Thursday night young people's meeting that was run by King's College students. But there came a day when a young woman from King's College said that Catholics would not go to heaven. Although I did not say anything at the time, I knew that this could not be true because my mother was Catholic and she was a good person. She was surely going to heaven. When I was sixteen and got my driver's license, I started attending New Castle Presbyterian Church with two friends, Joan Wallace and Lois Montgomery. It brings a smile to my

15 face when I picture the three of us parading into church wearing our best suits, hats and gloves. We always sat in front of the big Palladian window. It was not long before I was teaching Sunday School in the Arsenal with another classmate, Grace Duling Hayford. Not too many years later, my father was no longer working on Sundays and started coming to church, bringing with him my brother John and sisters, Florence and Sonia, who all became members. A family friend took Mother to Lady of Fatima church, which she attended until her death in Joan Smith, May 13, 2007
