1 Community Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) 1300 Holly Drive Richardson Texas voice fax Communi-K Volume 38 Number 4 February 16, 2011 Dear Friends, From Sunday s scripture reading in 1 Corinthians 3: 6, Paul declares, I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. I have always liked that illustration when trying to determine what I am doing in ministry with a church at any given point in my ministry there. Often I find that I am watering some else s program or ideas which is good! The church needs the ongoing influx of ideas and dreams for ministry coupled with the freedom and passion from congregation members to give them voice. Ideas for ministry do not always have to come from the preacher to be significant! Sometimes, though, the ideas do come from me, so I switch roles to become the one that plants. It is just as crucial, if not more so, to have someone who will be willing to water after a planting is done. If no one steps up to water the idea, the mission, or the ministry, it will die for lack of attention or support. If Paul planted his understanding for ministry and faith within the Corinthians and Apollos was not there to undergird it and support it, we might not have two letters to the Corinthians to learn from today. At a board meeting or committee meeting you may have attended recently, can you remember how many new ideas were tossed out for consideration or how many of them died for lack of support to water? Not every idea that is planted grows nor should they. Sometimes, being willing to see if they will take root after planting, and a little watering yields amazing results. Sometimes the growth is slow, and you wonder if the planting will survive. Allow me to lift up two examples of the slow growth variety we have here at Community. The first is our Good Friday service. I planted the idea for this one to split what had been previously the combined Maundy Thursday/Good Friday service into two services one on Thursday and one on Friday. Twice as much work and time is involved, but the Worship Committee agreed to water this one. Attendance for the Good Friday service is still small (30 to 35) but consistent. Some of those who come say it is the most moving service we have all year. Will it survive and grow only God knows, but that is the point. We can plant and we can water, and then we prayerfully wait to see how God will bring about growth. The second is the Lenten Journey that we set up in the Sanctuary the week before Holy Week. The idea was offered to us by the HeartPath s leaders as a way of giving back to our congregation for being the host facility for their program, which they planted. The Worship Committee and I agreed to water it. For the last four or five years, Lee Cole and Teresa Gafford (on behalf of the Worship Committee) have set it up for our and the community s use to prayerfully prepare ourselves to journey with Jesus into Holy Week. Again, participation with it has been small still those who have experienced it have been very appreciative. Will God continue its growth? We trust and wait. Planting and watering are ongoing necessities for the church everywhere. Sometimes we borrow programs, or clippings from someone else s planting and watering, to transplant them into our own local setting. Sometimes we share clippings with others from what we plant. Regardless of the setting, it is still God that provides the energy and spirit for growth. That part is not in our hands. Our decision is always whether or not we choose to keep watering. Paul planted and left to plant elsewhere. Apollos stayed and watered. We know more about Paul than Apollos. Fortunately God seems to have coupled Paul with a number of people like Apollos in a lot of places. What does God have you doing right now planting or watering? In Christ s service together wherever He leads both planting and watering! David

It is now anticipated there may be 35 to 40 in attendance from area churches attending the brunch. Please reserve both dates on your calendars. 4/29/11 5/1/11 NTA Spiritual Life Retreat at Disciples Crossing in Athens. Keynote speaker will be Rev. Mary E. Jacobs, President of International Disciples Women Ministry. Registration packets will soon be available and will be posted for sign up. If you have not attended a retreat in Athens, I hope you will consider attending either all or part of the retreat. Disciples Crossing is a very beautiful and peaceful retreat area where one can feel close to God and spiritually recharged. Baby Shower Hurray! Baby Burnett is on its way! So we re inviting you To welcome someone small and new! Join us for some baby shower fun Honoring Mic & Tracy s little one! Sunday, February 27 Fellowship Hall Potluck Lunch & Baby Shower (Sign-up on office window) Baby registry at Babies R Us and Target If you are interested in contributing toward a group gift, please contact Teresa Next meeting date is to be scheduled for May or June, date pending. Lu Sifferd, Chair Missing Wet-Dry Vacuum If anyone knows the whereabouts of the church s wet-dry vacuum that is missing from the storage shed, please let the church office know where it is. "Does a baby shower mean that it's raining babies?" Piglet asked Pooh.
3 Outreach Habitat for Humanity It looks like we will not have enough money this year to build two houses at $50K each. We will continue to try to expand our income stream (within RAIH) so that we might be able to build two next year. We will know better as we get closer to the end of the year. The second reason, as if we needed any more, was the inability to get a house without being all brick or starting in June. The chair of the RAIH board gave some real thought to starting one in June just so we could work June, July and August; but decided that he might be one of a very few that might be out there working in 100 degrees! So we will probably get one that will start in early September and finish up before Thanksgiving. This build will be in the Fair Park area and will be at least three sides siding. The walk-a-thon is coming up late next month. Check out the poster on the office window and pick up a brochure containing Walk-a-Thon details and pledge form. Sign up sponsors and come walk with us so that we can build two houses in Thanks, Mic
