1 Resurrection Lutheran Church Resurrection Lutheran Church s Mission: Sharing the Love of God God s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we loved God but that God loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Beloved, since God loved us so much, we also ought to love one another. John 4: 9-11 Personal Invitations As Christians, there are just certain things we do: we serve people in need, we worship God, we read the Bible, we forgive, and so on. One essential faith practice that often gets overlooked, however, is personally inviting someone else into a faith relationship with God. This personal invitation into a faith relationship with God could be an invitation to a friend to Easter Sunday worship, it could be an invitation to help pack food boxes at the food pantry, or it could be an invitation to prayer. Regardless of the event or the ministry, it is all an invitation and welcome into the Christian faith community and ultimately, into a faith relationship with God. Most likely someone invited us into faith and nurtured our Christian faith. It could have been a family member over a long period of time or it could have been a friend that invited us to worship for the first time in twenty years. When we think back, we can probably identify some of those people who invited and welcomed us into God s love. Because someone else took seriously the faith practice of personal invitation, we know Jesus Christ and God s grace that comes with our faith. Resurrection Lutheran Church Core Values April 2017 Worship: Gather around Word and Sacrament to receive the good news of God s grace and to respond in daily discipleship. Discipleship: Grow in faith, love, and obedience to the will of God through prayer, study, fellowship, worship, stewardship, service, and justice. Outreach: Invite and welcome our neighbors to experience the love of God here at Resurrection and within the Church universal.
2 P AGE 2 This isn t about a membership drive or bolstering Resurrection s numbers, but it flows out of our mission to share the love of God. Jesus sends his disciples to share the good news of God s love, to forgive sins, to serve others, and to invite and welcome more and more people into a faith relationship with God. Would you please add to your prayers an openness to who you might invite? Furthermore, would you be willing to add to your prayers a prayer for the courage to extend an invitation? You can trust that the Holy Spirit is part of this whole process, especially after that invitation is extended. Easter Sunday can be a good time to extend an invitation to worship. Who do you know that just might be open to an invitation? Plus, there s an egg hunt right after worship! Who do you know that just might take you up on your invitation, Hey, do you want to go to worship with me on Easter? I ll pick you up! Or check out all ministry happening this month at Resurrection (i.e. small groups, sip-n-paint, service events, etc.), and prayerfully think about who you might invite to participate with you. Council Meeting The congregation council meeting is Tuesday, April 11 at 7 PM. Facility Search Update The Facility Search Team is meeting Wednesday, April 19, at 6 PM to continue its work of identifying Resurrection s future church facility. Please keep this in your prayers! Triennial Pastor Review Report On Sunday, April 9, 10:45 AM, the Triennial Pastor Review Team will present their report that summarizes your input and responses for the triennial Pastor Review. Thank you for your participation! It was a good and healthy process and an important part of the ongoing relationship between pastor and congregation. Thank you to Phyllis Nelson, Jon Berg, and Jim Lindamood for leading the process! You will also receive the Team s report and Pastor Ben s response, too. $120,730 Pledged!
3 P AGE 3 W O R S H I P Lent The Season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and includes six Sundays and Holy Week. In the life of the church, it is a season of renewed devotion and intentional repentance. The word Lent means spring and refers to the spiritual growth that happens in us. The worship in Lent sometimes feel a little stark as a way to pick up on the Lenten themes and also capture that feel of early spring as the earth is putting great energy into getting ready to emerge vibrant but hasn t yet sprung forth. Community Cross Walk Several Channahon and Minooka churches are worshipping together Good Friday, April 14, 10 AM at Lion s Park in Minooka. We will also be hearing the story of Jesus last day and crucifixion Easter Sunday Invite your family and friends to celebrate Jesus resurrection on Sunday, April 16! After worship there will be a potluck brunch and Easter Egg hunt for the kids. Midweek Lenten Dinner/Church During the Season of Lent, we ll gather for dinner church from 6-7PM. The time together includes everyone sitting at one large table, soup potluck, prayer, song, Scripture, Holy Communion, and coloring. It is for all ages Holy Week The Three Days from Maundy Thursday through Easter are at the center of the church year. All of the worship services (Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter) work together in one arc. This worship journey moves us with Christ through death into life. Maundy Thursday, April 13 at 7 PM Good Friday, April 14 at 7 PM Easter Sunday, April 16 at 9:30 AM Music Leaders If you d like to be part of Resurrection s worship music team, please talk to Peg Tracy, Leader of Worship Music (peaceandjoy55@gmail.com). There s a place for singers and musicians of all ages and musical abilities! Children s Choir All children are welcome and encouraged to join the Children s Choir. The choir practices each Sunday right after worship. If you d like your child to be part of this joyous worship ministry, please talk with Bobbi Garbin ( , vanoskey@yahoo.com). Nursery Care Nursery child care is provided every Sunday. The nursery is for infants through five years old and is available throughout the worship service.
4 P AGE 4 D I S C I P L E S H I P Women s Bible Study The Women s Bible meets on Wednesday mornings (9:30-10:30 AM). If you d like to learn more, please talk with Nancy Corrigan ( , nmcorrigan@gmail.com). Bring your lunch and gather with friends at 11:30 AM on Thursdays. Beverages are provided. Lenten Faith Practices The season of Lent is a wonderful time to be intentional about a faith practice. Try adding something like: daily devotion, prayer, Sunday worship, Midweek Wednesday Worship, volunteer service, helping a friend, increased financial giving, etc. Small Group Opportunities All Joy and No Fun: the Paradox of Modern Parenting. Ever feel that way?! Join the conversation with fellow parents in the same boat. This is not a conversation about how to parent or what you should or shouldn t be doing; rather, it is a chance to talk about how being a parent effects us and our relationships. Nikki Nettgen ( ) will be leading this six week conversation based on the book All and Joy and No Fun by Jennifer Senior. Starts Tuesday, April 11 at 6 PM. Pastor Ben will be leading a Small Group based on the Netflix series Kindness Diaries. The show provides thoughtful insight into kindness, sharing, and connection and will be the basis for a fiveweek discussion that meets Wednesdays Confirmation in Lent: All Confirmation youth and their families are to participate in the Midweek Lenten Dinner Church, 6-7 PM. Synod Event Resurrection is part of the Northern Illinois Synod of the ELCA. On Saturday, April 29, at 9 AM, all are invited to participate in a conversation that will help set future priorities and vision for the Synod. The meeting is at New Life Lutheran Church in Bolingbrook. Leader of Discipleship Growth Thank you for your donations to the Rise and Shine Capital Campaign! They have made this important new staff position possible. The Congregation Council is delighted to announce that Beth Bullard has been hired and will officially begin May 1!
