2 Dear Church Family, King Solomon wrote these wise words in Ecclesiastes 3:1-2, For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted. Solomon knew that inside of the story of our lives here on earth there are several seasons that we travel, and in between those seasons, we transition. That s just a fact of life. Travis and Mitzi Peterson and family will soon be moving to Las Vegas, NV to serve as pastor of Providence Church. The Peterson s came to our church family during a very challenging season in their life. Our church welcomed them into our lives, and we have loved and served them well during their time here. They in turn, have poured themselves into the ministry of FBCC and have served significant needs throughout the church s ministry. We are thankful to God for our season together. But we also recognize that Travis has been uniquely shaped by God to serve Him as a preaching/teacher pastor where he can best glorify God and we therefore, joyfully launch them into their new adventure of ministry. Travis last day of ministry at FBCC will be on Sunday, June 21st. On that day we will have a farewell reception and also collect a special love offering for the Peterson family to aid them in their moving transition. I would ask that you prayerfully consider how God would have you to participate in these efforts to send them along with much love. Furthermore, I commend to you Travis ministry petersonfamilyministry.com for you to keep up with the Peterson s and serve him and his family as prayer partners. With this season in our church ending, that means that we are entering a new season of transition and planting our lives in greater efforts of ministry for God s glory. Very soon, our church family will come together to form a Search Committee as we prayerfully seek God s leadership to bring our next staff member to come alongside of us as we remain committed to fulfill God s vision for our church. The worship, discipleship/ evangelism ministries of our church need solid leadership; a person with a passion to aid God s people to glorify God through worship, to connect God s people and the Gospel of Christ with those who are far from God, and to equip God s people to serve the cause of Christ with every fiber of their being. God has great days in store for His people, and He will lead us well in this process. By way of the interim period of transition, I am excited to share with you that God has already opened a unique window of opportunity. The Personnel Committee and I are calling for a special called business meeting to be held on Wednesday, June 6:30 pm to approve our recommendation to hire Larry Rhodes to serve as our Interim Minister of Worship and Education, with the plans of Larry beginning his ministry with us that very week. Larry is a fantastic Christian guy and a proven ministry leader. Larry is currently semi-retired, and is serving part-time as ministry consultant for our Metro East region through the ministry of IBSA. Previously, Larry has served full-time in ministry as an Associate Pastor, Worship and Education at FBC Bethalto, IL for 22 years and FBC Salem, IL for 7 years in a similar position. Prior to that, Larry served our nation s military. Larry loves Jesus. He has a deep faith in God. He has been well trained to lead God s people to worship their Savior. He loves the church and is uniquely qualified to serve our church during this transition. Look in this week s bulletin for a more detailed bio of Larry and his family. What I am most grateful for in the various seasons of life is that God is Lord over them all. God is present and guiding His people during the seasons of planting and plucking up. He is present and guiding His people during the seasons of weeping and laughing. God is Lord over all of life, and He will faithfully lead His people to learn to love Him, to serve Him, and to desire to glorify Him in all things. Would you join me in fervent prayer as we seek to follow God s leadership. I love you all, and I am grateful to be your pastor. Pastor Jonathan

3 Dear Church Family, I have the bitter-sweet responsibility to communicate to you what God is doing in the life of my family. On Monday, May 22, I submitted to Pastor Jonathan and the personnel committee my resignation. My family and I will soon be moving to Las Vegas, Nevada to begin serving as the new pastor of Providence Church, a young church plant. I will be serving a group of around fifty adults who desire to glorify God, grow in Christ, and make disciples. I look forward to regular preaching and shepherding opportunities as I work with the existing church leadership toward growth. I would ask for your love and prayers as we work through this transition. We need to sell our home, find a new place to live, and make the transition as smoothly as possible. We are moving into a new culture and adopting a new sort of missional lifestyle. In the future, we will be asking for all who are interested to join us as prayer partners as we join in this new ministry. We are grateful to God for the opportunity to serve this church body. We have loved you and have been well loved by you in return. I believe that God brought us here for a particular season and to meet particular needs in the life of FBC Columbia. I m glad to have been a part of that. We are sad to leave behind so many dear friends, but excited about what God has in store. Travis Peterson Follow the Peterson s on their journey on their new blog: petersonfamilyministry.com There will be a Farewell Reception on Sunday, June 21. We will be collecting a love offering for the Peterson s.

10 Today there are an estimated 143 million children who are orphans or are in a foster care system. Yes, it s a big number. And it can be difficult to know how one person can make a dent in a reality so daunting. However, one Christian every Christian can make a difference. God is not looking to you to solve the problem. You are only to be faithful to do what He is asking you do. And if you give yourself to the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then your light will rise in darkness and your gloom will become like midday. And the Lord will continually guide you, and satisfy your desire in scorched places, and give strength to your bones; and you will be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water whose waters do not fail. Isaiah 58:10-11 INTERESTED IN ORPHAN HOSTING? Information is available at the Information Table in the church Atrium. Someone is waiting on YOU! Vision 1:27 Our mission statement is to extend God s heart for the orphan to domestic and international orphans through God s people being His hands, feet and voice sharing His love with them to the Glory of God. We are inspired by Isaiah 1:17 which says, Learn to do good, Seek Justice, Reprove the ruthless, Defend the Orphans, Plead for the Widow. Jeremiah 29:11 says, I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, they are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. Many of these children without permanent families have given up hope for a good future but that is not what the Lord has planned for them. Our ministry goal is twofold: Building families through the adoption miracle and Showing God s love to the world s orphans. Through our adoption focus, we desire to be a catalyst for those whom God is showing adoption as a path for them to build their families. We seek to encourage the families that God places in front of us, to pray for them, and to provide whatever resources are at our disposal to help them throughout their adoption journey. We also seek to build up our community of adoptive families through fellowship activities. Finally, our objective is to reach out to the unchurched through the adoption message, as a parallel story to our own salvation. Through our orphan care focus, we seek to follow God s command of James 1: 27 to visit orphans and show them God s love. Our goal is to share our resources and skills to orphans worldwide to improve their quality of life and to minister to their physical, emotional, and spiritual needs.
