1 ANCHOR May 2018 THE MARATHON IN THIS ISSUE The Marathon by Pastor Scott Martin VBS, Marathon Information, Letter from Deacons Almost a month ago, I great sense of pride swelled up in me. Hope Church, through generations, packed over 100 meals and as many encouragement cards for the People City Mission. Only an hour before the event, I turned to Chris and said, I wonder if anyone will come?. Hope Community Church is a church who serves not out of obligation but out of a thankfulness for Jesus. Too often, the Church forgets its job; all of a sudden we find ourselves going through the motions instead of instilling a passionate relationship with Jesus in our, and other s hearts. There are hundreds if not thousands of bestselling books on the magic recipe to make your church great. Many these books center around Bible verses or certain formulas of services to missions ratios. Often times, the authors become somewhat bitter towards the church in trying to convey the magic formula. What I have found is that Hope is full of Christians seeking to share the grace, the love, the service we have been given. The danger, with any church, is to fall into complacency or ritualistic feelings towards comfortable, yearly events. I ll admit, I was worried events like the Marathon could turn into that. But, when I talk to the leadership of our church in the Marathon, I sense a great desire to be the Hands and Feet of Christ to the runners and entire city of Lincoln. Linda Rutz on My Bridge Radio conveyed this brilliantly on their morning radio show. I know she represents over 100 people ready to serve the city! There are certain things you can t bottle up and put into a book. Parenting, being a spouse, and being a dynamic church are three topics that come to my mind right away. In all of these examples, the uniqueness of the individuals working together make it impossible for some secret recipe. Sure, giving limits to your children could help. But giving limits as a soft spoken parent versus a load and hard line parent creates such vastly different needs in parenting. Hope Church has thrived, and will continue to thrive because we serve with a joyful heart as Jesus to our city, state, and world. As I look forward to the Lincoln Marathon, look towards two youth mission trips, and know that a team of 10 people are going to travel to Haiti this November, I believe Hope Church gives and serves for the right reasons and without going through the motions. Be in constant prayer, understanding your gifts, on how you can serve out of relationship with our Lord and Savior. It is this type of service which brings you so much closer to Him. **See page 3 for an update to our missions through Hope Community Church

5 THE ANCHOR March May and 1 service by Scott Martin May has several exciting events that are happening: May 2 Youth Group and Parent Meeting May 5 Marathon 6:30 May 6 Volunteering at the Lincoln Marathon May 13 Mother s Day Service and Baptisms May 20 Graduation Sunday and New Members May 27 One service only at 10:30 Starting June 3 rd, we will have a 10:30 service only without education hour until the August Fall Kickoff. Why? Because it brings a needed break for so many volunteers. This break will also come strategically at a time when many families are gone on summer vacations. I would ask that you continue to place a priority on church throughout the summer. Summer is a time where we tell oursleves it s okay to get out of the habit on things that keep you healthy. Consider that the church is your spiritual health bringer! Giving Statements by Deacons Hope Church Family: The Deacon s would like to thank the congregation for their faithful giving in the past and thus far in Your generous contributions, coupled with our judicious and cost conscious budgeting, have allowed us to meet our budget needs over the past years and we thank you for helping us achieve that! We wanted to make you aware of a change to our past practice of providing quarterly giving statements. Starting in 2018, we will now only provide giving statements two times a year instead of four (July and January). The change is due to the functionality of our new software system, as well as part of our costconscious budgeting. For members who need their statements on a more frequent basis, we can still provide this information by contacting either Jared Jobes at Jared@HopeChurchLincoln.org, or Jeff Jobes at JJobes4710@aol.com. This information can be provided via or regular mail at your request. We thank you again for your continued support.
