5 ST. THOMAS AQUINAS CATHOLIC CHURCH & SCHOOL A LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR Dear Friends in Christ, With only week to go before Holy Week, there s so much going on here at St Thomas Aquinas for which to praise God. Our Lenten Reconciliation service was amazing. So many people came with the burden of their sins to Jesus and left with an experience of divine mercy and new freedom. If you weren t able to get to the Sacrament of Penance and still wish to, there s still time: this coming Saturday, il 13, at 8:30 am and 3:30 pm, at the confessionals in the vestibule. Last call! It s also been deeply moving to accompany six grades of our school in their individual confessions this Lent. That s about 300 young people experiencing first-hand the mercy of Jesus in preparation for Holy Week. Our teachers and parents do a great job of leading our students to deeper transformation in Christ. Also, this coming Thursday evening, 130 young people in our RE program are celebrating the Sacrament of Penance for the first time. Thanks to our RE staff, Michael Garibaldi and Anna Dice, and our amazing volunteer staff of catechists, for preparing them so well. Speaking of our school, this week I m journeying with our eighth grade class on a special trip to Santa Fe. We ll explore our rich history in Santa Fe and beyond, through workshops, visits, and prayer. We have a particular focus on sacred art. Please pray for us that the Lord opens hearts and minds to his beauty, revealed in history, art, and prayer. Please continue to pray for the repose of the soul of officer Paul Rutherford and for the consolation of his family. He served for 22 years for the Phoenix Police Department and lost his life in the line of duty. I m grateful to so many parishioners who came to his funeral and have been offering support to his family in this painful time. It was a true privilege to offer his funeral Mass and to participate in the amazing tribute offered by the Phoenix PD. This time of year I receive many forms of encouragement and well-wishes from departing snowbirds, as they begin to fly back to their other nests in more northernly locales. Snowbirds, you re truly an important part of the parish, no matter how long or short your annual stay in Arizona may be. If you are leaving soon, I pray the Lord blesses you with safe travel and many blessings over the warmer months. And don t forget: just because you re in Canada (or Michigan, or Minnesota, etc) you can still support the exciting work of Saint Thomas Aquinas at Faith Direct ( May the Lord guide you in this final week before Holy Week. Truly in Christ, Fr John Muir Carvaggio s The Calling Of St. Matthew Parish Finance Council Members Needed! Fr. Muir is seeking additional Parish Finance Council members. 8 General Giving Almsgiving 1. As Christian stewards, we share the responsibility of making our Church a true community of faith and a vibrant source of service to the larger community. That includes providing financial support for today s needs -- and building a firm financial foundation for tomorrow. 2. Remember you can pay it forward! You have a wonderful Catholic heritage. Just as we plan to ensure financial health for our families, we must plan for the health of our faith families. Your planned gift to our parish will support our ministries now and for years to come. 3. The Holy Spirit brought the early Church alive by giving individuals gifts that would sustain the Church. By sharing the gifts, you have been blessed with you can keep the church alive for years to come. IRA Giving 4. Did you know that federal law allows tax-free charitable distributions from your IRA? Charitable taxpayers who are age 70 ½ or older can direct qualified charitable distributions from their fund administrator directly to the charities of their choice, including one s parish, school, or favorite ministry. Please consider using your IRA as a charitable giving vehicle. 5. If you have an IRA and you re 70 ½ years old, you can make a tax-reducing gift today through an IRA Charitable Rollover. It helps you and it helps us. How it helps you: it can lower your taxable income, count towards your required minimum distribution, and help you feel good about giving to your parish. How it helps us: we can put your gift to use right away in providing financial support to our ministries throughout the parish. 6. If you are 70 ½ years old or older, you can donate up to $100,000 from your IRA directly to your parish. It will not count as taxable income and it can satisfy your required minimum distribution. 7. Normally, a distribution from your IRA is taxed as ordinary income. However, tax legislation made permanent this charitable giving opportunity for individuals 70½ or older. You may make a direct distribution (up to $100,000) from your IRA to a qualified charity, such as your parish, the Bishop s Appeal, a ministry, or another diocesan institution. Such qualified direct distributions to charity from your IRA are not subject to income tax. You will not receive a tax deduction for the distribution either. 8. Don t miss the chance to make a charitable IRA gift this year! If you are 70 ½ or older and own an IRA, please consider making a charitable rollover gift before December 31. You can make a gift up to $100,000 directly from your IRA to our parish, a ministry, or our school. Your gift will: a. not be included in your taxable income b. satisfy your required minimum distribution for the year c. reduce your taxable income, even if you do not itemize deductions d. not be subject to the limitation on charitable gifts e. help the work of the Church. Easter Flowers The beautiful Easter Lilies and spring flowers that adorn the Altar and Sanctuary honor our Lord s Passion, Resurrection, and Ascension. They make present our hope in joining God in Heaven - our Eternal Wedding Feast in our new and restored Garden at the Heavenly Banquet. Easter is the Feasts of feasts and God calls each one of us to solidarity with His beautiful creation. Your participation of donating towards the adornment of our Altar this Easter can be made through the speacial Easter envelopes, online through Faith Direct, or by simply stoping by the parish office. Make a joyful offering of flowers this Easter Season as we all come together in Celebration of our Risen Lord!
