6 Announcements Youth Evangelization and Service Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church Upcoming Events: October 27: Jr. High Youth Group - from 6:30pm - St. Clare Hall October 28: Jr High and High School Sacraments from 6:30pm - (Room 204, Library & Teen Center) October 29: High School Youth Group Meeting From 6:30pm Teen Center November 03: Jr. High Youth Group St. Clare Hall November 04: Jr. High and High School Sacraments Room 204 and Library The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed "I will not reject anyone who comes to me." Today, as we remember the faithful departed, we can rejoice in these words from Jesus. He promises that he will welcome those who come to him. He is so anxious to embrace us! As the catechism puts it, "All who die in God's grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation" (CCC 1030). Jesus' whole message here is important. Eternal salvation is available to all, but it does involve a level of participation on our part. "Everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life," Jesus says in today's Gospel. When it's authentic, of course, this belief is more than mere lip service. Understanding that Jesus is our savior and our God is one thing. Coming to him is another; it takes belief to the next level of personal commitment. This involves choices, decisions, and actions. Coming to Jesus means being near him-through a spiritual life that involves a real relationship with him-as well as being focused on him by charting our life's course in the light of faith. This is what we strive to do during the ups and downs of this life. But it isn't always easy. Even as faithful Christians we often fall short of perfect cooperation with God. But this is not cause for despair! Today we remember that even Christians who die still "imperfectly purified" can ultimately share the blessing of heaven. We pray for these souls in purgatory to come closer and closer to perfect union with the Lord. And meanwhile, we strive to increase our own union with Christ in the hopes of sharing eternity with him and with the whole communion of saints, including our loved ones who have gone before us in faith. 7 Around the Diocese Life Long Learning. As the name indicates we never become truly stagnant in our lives. We continue to experience life s lessons handed to us in our daily activities, whether it be on the job or at home, we never stop learning. This also applies to our spiritual health and awareness. Here at St. Thomas Aquinas we hope to offer a variety of opportunities for adults to come together and learn more about our faith, develop new friendships, and deepen our relationship with God and each other. Some of the more familiar things we have done in the past and hope to continue are; bible studies, Catholicism 101, Advent and Lenten retreats. Some new ideas are things like; Catholicism 102, Adult Singles Group, Catholic Men Ministries, Marriage Enhancement, Family activities, and many others. I can t do this alone! I need help with deciding what to offer. I need help in organizing, implementing and facilitating. Become part of a leadership team, contact Deacon Milford at extension 210 or at msuida@stacc.net God Bless, Deacon Milford If you feel called to a Franciscan vocation, or would just like to know more about the Secular Franciscan Order, we will be having a "Come and See" afternoon to be held on Sunday, November 9 at St. Thomas Aquinas RC Church W. 8 Spiritual Enrichment 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time "The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments." The law of love. That's what Jesus came to establish. In a religious milieu that was often marked by legalism and scrupulosity, Jesus brought a kind of freedom. He reminded us that the laws of religion are made to serve the ultimate goal of love: love for God and love for neighbor. Think about the Ten Commandments. This classical summary of God's rules for us can be divided into two types of laws. First come the laws about loving God: have no strange gods; don't take the Lord's name in vain; honor the Sabbath. Then come the laws about loving our neighbor: honor your parents; don't kill; don't commit adultery; don't steal; be honest; and don't covet your neighbor's spouse or property. When we follow the law of love that Jesus preaches today, all of this is taken care of. If we loved God with our whole heart, mind, and soul, for example, there would be no room left for false gods. There would be no bitterness or apathy leading us to disrespect God's name or to fail to worship him as he has asked. Similarly, if we loved our neighbors as ourselves by following the Golden Rule, then we would naturally respect them instead of lying, killing, coveting, or the like. Ultimately, all the dos and don'ts of the law are just specific guidelines describing what love looks like. This is very helpful for those times when love doesn't come so easily to us. When we struggle with having our heart in the right place, the Ten Commandments give us direction. But as Jesus instructs us today, the goal is to grow in the kind of love that naturally leads us to want to do what's best Liturgical Publications Inc To the one who has faith, no explanation is necessary. To one without faith, no explanation is possible. `Saint Thomas Aquinas` UPCOMING RETREATS AT OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE MONASTERY Day of Reflection for people in Relationship with people who are differently abled, including people with physical challenges, autism, etc. Saturday, Nov. 15,9:30 AM- 12:30pm.
