1 DIOCESE OF PHOENIX SAINT THOMAS AQUINAS Catholic Church & School FEBRUARY 3RD, TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME When the people in the synagogue heard this, they were all filled with fury. They rose up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town had been built, to hurl him down headlong. But Jesus passed through the midst of them and went away. 4 Dear Friends in Christ, ST. THOMAS AQUINAS CATHOLIC CHURCH & SCHOOL A LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR Last week it was such a joy to celebrate our patronal feast day, St. Thomas Aquinas. It reminded me of how blessed we are to have a saint like him, someone who exemplified the deep complementarity of faith and reason, of heart and mind, that is essential to Catholicism. How needed this is today! We also celebrated Catholic Schools Week last week. I m so proud of the families, faculty, and staff that make up our school, a community-within-a-community, with over five hundred people. We educate students in the broadest sense of the term: we form students into the persons they are meant to become, in the dual light of faith and reason. Our students not only grow academically in math, science, language, etc., but we also see them grow in their love and knowledge of Christ, and the difference he makes. Thank you to everyone who sacrifices to make our school such a major part of our parish community not least of whom is our wonderful principal, Mrs. Cynthia Scheller. It s a joy to work alongside her day-in and day-out. With some sadness I wish to tell you that Fr Venantius Yikore, one of our parochial vicars (associate priests) has been re-assigned to St. John Vianney parish in Sedona, where he will serve also as a vicar. He will serve here through ruary and begin in Sedona on March 1, Please join me in thanking Fr. V for his fine service to St. Thomas Aquinas parish and praying for God s blessing on his transition and future service in our diocese. If you wish to write a note of gratitude and appreciation to him, feel free to drop it off at the front office. I m happy to report that Bishop Olmsted has assigned another priest to St. Thomas Aquinas to begin work here as a parochial vicar, beginning on March 11, His name is Fr. Bryan Buenger. He has been serving in a diocese in New Zealand (it s called the Diocese of Palmerston North) for three years and is returning to his native United States. He lived and worked in Gilbert, Arizona for years, so he is familiar with the Valley of Sun. I hope you ll begin praying for the Lord s blessings on him as he prepares to transition to our parish, and that the Lord will bring great fruit our of his future work here. Truly in Christ, Fr. Muir Preparations are in the home stretch for the building of the Dumb Ox- Gift Shop and Welcome Center and staff offices. Construction to begin soon - we know, that s not a date! But soon! Really! Continue to keep these efforts in your prayers - we are delighted with the progress and to be able to serve the parish, and greater community in this way!
