1 One Thousand and Eight Knights A Joint Bimonthly Newsletter between Archbishop J.L Wilhelm Council 1008 and Genoa Assembly 0863, Ontario March April 2018 Volume XLI Issue V THE LENTEN PRACTICES OF PRAYER, FASTING AND ALMSGIVING CAN RENEW OUR LIVES SEASON OF RENEWAL Three analogies might help us see Lent in terms of a spiritual springtime. First, just as we do spring cleaning, washing away the dirt and grime that accumulates during the winter months, so too Lent is a time for cleansing our souls and our hearts, making them a beautiful dwelling place for the Lord. Or to use another comparison, spring is the season when farmers clear the land of debris and till the soil, thus giving the seeds they plant every chance to germinate THE MERE MENTION of Lent can sometimes seem dismal, like a long, dreary day. Lent consists, in fact, of 40 days and 40 nights of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Who can endure it? soul to God s love and the needs of others. Then the spiritual air we breathe becomes stuffy, even polluted, with self-pity, impurity, anger, grudges and thoughts of revenge. Lent is a time to open the windows of our souls, to allow the fresh air of God s love to circulate anew in the depths of our hearts and to get ourselves moving outward toward our brothers and sisters who are in need. Once we look at the season of Lent as the herald of a new springtime in our spiritual lives, Lenten practices are no longer unwelcome intrusions into our comfort. Rather, they become harbingers of hope for a more Christ-centered way of life. These penitential practices are indicators and tools of God s mercy mercy that is always available to us. Divine Mercy has the power to transform our way of life. Yet the word Lent does not pertain to darkness or despair. Quite the opposite. The original meaning of the word actually has to do with springtime. When Lent begins, it s winter. But by the time Lent concludes, the days are growing longer and the forsythias are in bloom. Even if there is an unseasonal snow shower, we take heart knowing that winter is having its last gasp. Lent, then, represents a new springtime in our spiritual lives. It s a time when the darkness of sin gives way to a new light. So, too, in Lent we are to clear the soil of our hearts from the debris of sin and the deadwood of hatred; by spiritual discipline, we till and enrich the soil of our souls so that the seed of God s Word, planted in us at baptism, will germinate and grow. Finally, in winter, we sometimes feel poorly due to indoor pollutants that contaminate the air we breathe. When the weather grows warmer, we open windows to let in fresh air. Just the thought of getting out of the house and taking a walk makes us feel better. But isn t it true that we sometimes insulate our hearts? When we become self-centered, we close the windows of our With this perspective in mind, let s briefly review the three principal Lenten practices, with our eyes fixed on the goal of renewed spiritual joy and greater holiness of life. THE PRACTICE OF FAITH Let s begin with prayer, or conversation with God. There are many ways to pray, but let s concentrate on one: silent, mental prayer, when we are alone with God and his voice echoes in our hearts. Such prayerful solitude requires us to turn off all our electronic devices, block out distractions and simply ask the Lord to let us see ourselves as he sees us. This is more than self-awareness. It is asking the Lord to help us measure our lives according to his standards, not our own. It is humbly asking the Lord for grace and strength to confront our overt sins as well as the hidden corruption that we often conceal from others and even from ourselves. Continued page 3

3 Continued I don t know about you, but when I pray in this way, I find I m well short of the mark. Such prayer leads me to seek the Lord s mercy and to make an unburdening confession of my sins. Lent is preeminently the time to grow in prayer and to receive the sacrament of reconciliation. This is a first and essential step in spiritual housecleaning. A second Lenten practice is fasting or some other form of self-denial. This isn t the same as dieting. Rather, depriving ourselves of food is connected with the arduous process of emptying ourselves of everything that concentrating instead on the needs of others, especially the poor and vulnerable. When we open our hearts in love to those in need, the stale air of self-centeredness dissipates as the fresh air of Jesus self-giving love circulates through our inmost being, and we are thus spiritually reinvigorated. For us as Knights, this practice of charity should be second nature. Prayer, fasting and almsgiving are, in fact, inseparable. As St. Peter Chrysologus (+450) taught: Fasting is the soul of prayer, almsgiving is the lifeblood of fasting. When you fast, see the fasting of others. If you want God to know you are hungry, know that another is hungry. If you want mercy, show mercy. obstructs the grace of God from working in us and through us. Fasting has a way of helping us uproot our deep-seated habits of sin and our endless desire for comfort, convenience, power and esteem. The discipline of foregoing food or other comforts is a way of tilling the soil of our souls, making them receptive to God s Word. A final Lenten practice is almsgiving, which includes giving of ourselves and our resources to those who are in need. The practice of charity is how we open the windows of our souls to God s love, forgetting our own wants and needs and In this way, may our Lenten observance lead us to experience a renewed life in Christ and joy in the Holy Spirit. Supreme Chaplain Archbishop William E. Lori Faithful Navigator s Report Sir Knights; Our Worthy Master has advised me that an election for the position of Master for our area must be held this year. 6 Grand Knight s Message Dear Brother Knights, As we journey together in this Lenten season by way of self-sacrifice. Jesus taught, unless there is a Good Friday in your life, there can be no Easter Sunday, and Jesus taught us clearly that, there is no Resurrection without the Cross. In this 40 Days of Penance, we prepare our hearts for Easter. I would like to thank each and every one of our Brother Knights in Council 1008 in recognition of all of their service, time and good works informed by our 4 core principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism. It is crucial to the longevity of our council that newly recruited members and our younger members take part in support of achieving our goals with our committees. Our planning and business meetings are key in reaching the level of communication required to reach our mandate. It is through these communications, our spiritual journey, support and encouragement of each other in faith that we find our purpose, persevere and continue together to move forward. In our own search through our 40 Days of Lent it is a time of cleansing, opening our hearts to all of our brothers and parish community, while working toward the good of others. As we take this opportunity to grow Greetings from the not so warm Sunny South but at least there is no snow, yet. While I sit here in Corpus Christie Texas, pondering over some ideas to put into this short article for our newsletter, the only theme that I can think of, is the meaning of home. Yes, it is great that Liz and I are blessed to be able to take three months off from the winter months of Canada and enjoy the south but there is always the call of home that makes me a little homesick. We tend to reflect on how fortunate we are to be Canadian. The meaning of home can mean a lot of things to people. Warm, cozy, safe, welcoming, inviting and or with a common interest. Well I can tell you that St. Andrew s Catholic Church on Padre Island is certainly that. The parishioners, many of whom are considered Snowbirds all have something in common and that is the faith in the Catholic Church and in Jesus. The warmhearted and welcoming environment at this parish allows newcomers to easily fit in and feel at home. The people we have met down here are great, in faith more fully through shared values, and in living the example of a charity that evangelizes and represents what it means to be a Catholic gentleman. Through these practices of good works, let us offer all of our works of service to the needs of our parish and community, as sacrifice in unity with Our Lord Jesus Christ in his Passion, Death and Resurrection. Thank You Brother Knights. Vivat Jesus! Stephen Davis Grand Knight Deputy Grand Knight s Message but many do have their interesting ways of thinking. These differences in thinking maybe challenging at times but I believe most people are good and want to live in peace and harmony. This can be said about our brotherhood. At times our differences tend to get in the way of our goal of helping others. If we can focus on why we became a Knight and treat those within our Brotherhood with respect during challenging discussions, then ultimately we will be able to provide a comfortable and productive environment. Let us all strive to make our council more welcoming and open to respectful discussion so that our Brothers will feel like they are home. This in turn, may encourage others to want to join in with our special home. Knighthood! Br. Sandor Gyuk Deputy Grand Knight

7 District Deputy Dissertation Greetings Brother Knights! DISTRICT 73 Spring is here, well sort of anyway; we ve been getting a little taste of not so winter weather lately. Along with spring comes our Church seasons of Lent and joyfully Easter. The Lenten season is when we should focus on prayer, devotion to the eucharist, fast and penance, and charity. As members of the KofC; taught as our lesson of the Initiation Degree, I believe we should put special focus on CHARITY and good works throughout our fraternity, parishes, and communities to make this Lenten season meaningful for us as individuals. So, take every opportunity to be charitable to your family and friends, fellow Knights, parishioners, and those in our communities in need of our charity. One program the Knights have come up with is 40 Cans For Lent as part of the Food for Families program and I ve included the info on it for Councils can take advantage of this. In other news, the Holy Family Icon has just reached our district and I encourage our Councils to utilize it well amongst our parishes. The Holy Family Prayer Program is the 17th Marian Prayer Program sponsored by the Knights of Columbus and the second year we have it available to us. Vivat Jesus, Brian Moloney District Deputy Ontario State District 73 Brother Knights: This message will be short and to the point. I would like ALL of you to remember the word SECRECY and the importance it holds to our organization. There has been more that one occurrence in the last several months where I have noticed first hand, and others that I've been informed about, where members are discussing ceremonials in front of non- members. We need to remember that no matter if it is a family member, a new candidate, or even clergy of the highest form we are NOT to discuss ceremonials in front of them if they are not yet a member. 9 Worthy Sir Knights Genoa Assembly 863 March 2018 Newsletter May 26 th is fast approaching. In case you missed it, that is the date of our next Exemplification in Cornwall. This will be a 1 day event which includes a Ladies Program. An information package has been distributed to all Faithful Navigators. Note that May 1 st is the deadline to get your form 4 s and all banquet and Ladies Program registration forms and cheques to me. Nominations for a new Master will be accepted at the March 24, st Ontario District meeting in Cornwall. If anyone is interested please do not hesitate to contact me for further information. Fraternally, SK Norm Fontaine Master 1 st Ontario District SECRECY X2 Hello again Brother Knights and Sir Knights, This is a different message than the one I gave as the Warden, but still conveys the same general message. It is now Spring an we should try to do spring cleaning on our computers just like we do spring cleaning around our homes. I would just like to give a word of caution. Many scams are happening right now where people are calling or you get a pop up on your computer saying your system is sending a warning/threat/alert to another system but they will be able to help you fix it. STOP! STOP RIGHT NOW! No company will contact you like this, and their attempt to try and help you is nothing more than a false hood so they can steal not only information from you but also money. Microsoft, Apple, or your Internet Provider will not contact you by phone/a pop up on your computer telling you there is an issue. These are scams and they are getting more and more convincing. You're best to just hang up/close windows/restart your computer if you get something like this. It is a con in an attempt to steal your money and your identity. So please be cautious as even the most skilled can sometimes become a victim of a well engineered scam and if you aren't sure call your internet provider, your operating system manufacturer or even me and we will help guide you through what to do to protect yourself, and do so at no cost as we all know the safety of everyone is paramount. 11 Faithful Scribe s Journal Recently as I enjoyed a warm break from our Canadian winter with my wife in a Fort Lauderdale vacation home we were taken back by another school shooting that had just occurred within 10 miles of our place of relaxation. The local news portrayed in unfolding detail how the lives of 17 students and teachers had been horrendously shortened bringing devastation to numerous fellow students, family and the surrounding community. What transcribed from this event was an encouraging and rather surprising reprisal from fellow school students in response to this heartbreaking devastation. The expected acceptance of this ruthless act that was noted as somehow becoming an accepted normality in this country was met with a response of remorse but became a genuine desire to change the laws that would allow this to happen. I pray that our country and students may be spared the devastation of such actions but find myself compelled to recognise the level of maturity that our young people today are prepared in face of tragedy. With compelling desire, nurtured skill and organization support these mid teen students took their concerns with heart felt speeches along with an impressing number of students of similar schools as support to the state government and rallied officials to have the laws changed. These students spoke with a true inner conviction, knowledge and sincerity that could have well been expected of a person with a much higher education and age. Their level of expertise and dialogue resulted in leaders of their government rethinking change. I admire the sincerity and dialogue these young people could bring in a time of duress and what may have contributed this level of maturity? Most people I believe are born with a natural desire to strive for good, but good family support and values probably do more to mold and condition these individuals. As parents or grandparents, I think we must strive diligently to provide our kids and grandkids ALL the tools they will need for them to be The Best That They Can Be God Bless our Country and Young People. 12 Caring for Our Own The Knights of Columbus isn t just an insurance company. It s a brotherhood, and so we do things differently. If we were just another insurance company, you d be nothing more than customers or potential customers who only add value based on the products you purchase. But you re not. You re brothers, and so are we. After all, Father McGivney founded the Knights 136 years ago so that we could help each other. So we offer you products and services unique to our industry because we care deeply about you and your families, and your wellbeing. For starters, we extend to each of our members an Accidental Death benefit for free, just by virtue of their membership in the Knights of Columbus. The program which is only available in insurance jurisdictions provides a benefit of $1,000 - $2,500 upon the accidental death of any member or his spouse (subject to certain age restrictions). The program was launched at the 113 th Supreme Council Meeting in 1994, and has continued to the present day, providing more than $12.5 million in benefits. In addition to the Accidental Death benefit, the Knights of Columbus offer a number of free services to our members and their families. First and foremost, we agents are committed to providing survivor assistance to widows and families left behind after the loss of a loved one. Most commercial agents would fill out the necessary paperwork and move on, but not Knights of Columbus agents. We will stand by you and help you contact your attorney to sort out the will, help you make funeral arrangements, help you notify and coordinate with the council, help resolve any financial matters, help you file any claims (including claims with companies other than the Knights of Columbus), and will help file for survivor benefits or Veteran s benefits, if necessary. Secondarily, we offer two additional services to help Knights families plan. The first is Profiles & Forecaster, a comprehensive and complimentary industry tool that helps you evaluate your family s financial situation, and to determine what insurance protection if any may be needed. The second, the Knights of Columbus Personal Planning Workbook, will help you record your final wishes and important information (including accounts, passwords, funeral arrangements, etc.) for your survivors. Both of these services are free. To our insurance members,* we offer two additional programs: the Family Fraternal Benefit Program, and the Orphan Fraternal Benefit Program. The Family Fraternal Benefit Program offers two distinct benefits. The first offers insurance eligibility to uninsurable children. Through the Program, a member can purchase a $5,000 life insurance policy for an otherwise uninsurable child at standard rates before the child is 61 days old, or at a rated premium if before the child s 18 th birthday. A member can also purchase a $5,000 policy for a mentally impaired child at standard rates, between the ages of 3 and 18 years old. The Program also offers death benefit coverage to members who have lost an infant child less than 61 days after birth, or who have lost an unborn child in a stillbirth, after the 20 th week. (The Order affirms that life begins at conception. In this instance, the benefit requires a certified death certificate for the stillborn child, hence the 20- week rule.) The second fraternal benefit program available to insured members is the Orphan Fraternal Benefit Program. This extensive program also provides two benefits. The first is an $80 monthly benefit for each eligible orphan, until their 19 th birthday. The second is a scholarship program, which grants eligible orphans up to $1,750 per year for a four-year period. In a letter addressing the programs, our Supreme Knight Carl Anderson noted that These benefits augment the tradition of fraternity established by Father McGivney, namely, that the Order cares for its own; it expands upon a basic reason for which he founded the Order: of rendering pecuniary aid to its members, their families, and beneficiaries of members and their families. They are part of what makes us unique. So get to know all of our fraternal benefits, and the ways in which you may benefit from them. Contact me today to learn more. *To be eligible for both the Family Fraternal Benefit Program, and the Orphan Fraternal Benefit Program, the member must be in good standing, and either he or his wie must be insured under a Knights of Columbus certificate requiring an annual premium of at least $150, or providing at least $5,000 in permanent life insurance coverage. Eligibility for the Orphan Fraternal Benefit Program is also contingent on the child being covered by an individual Knights of Columbus certificate. 13 Columbian Squires Circle #418 Hello Brother Knights and Sir Knights I'm happy to report that since my last report our Squires Circle now has 12 young men apart of it 10 of whom are active, with at least 3 more who are interested in joining. I will be reaching out to the Chief Counsellor in Trenton to look at doing a joint investiture ceremony after Easter Sunday to celebrate the Easter Season. So if you know a young man please let them know about the program. Many who came out to Council #1008 Spaghetti Dinner and Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper saw our Squires in action doing anything from cleaning up, setting up, and even cooking! The response was overwhelming with how many people commented on how great it was to see them there. Once I get signed media/photo release statements back I will happily share the pictures! We are also looking for more Counsellors. We have had 2 become quite ill and one is enjoying a much deserved vacation. This means that if I can't get one of the 3 to come and help I need to cancel any proposed meetings or postpone them until their can be two of us at all times. We meet the 4th Thursday from 6:30 8:30PM and the following Saturday from 1-4PM every month. If you can help, or you know another Knight who can help PLEASE contact me. All that is needed is for you to complete a background check and then do safe environment training which is available online or can be brought to you physically by request. Esto Dignus, Brother Peter Chief Counsellor peter@matwyuk.ca The boys are currently fundraising to get to the convention this year, which is being held in Burlington from May Although Council #1008 is our sponsoring Council if there are others who could use the help of these young men please reach out to me now and anytime in the future.

15 Church Director s Report Brother Knights: One of our main sources of fund raising for our Council is to host different meals of various types to whet the appetites of our area, including our fellow Knights. One and probably the only major concern when organizing our banquets is the volunteering, or lack thereof, to carry out and enjoy a worthwhile fund raiser. This has resulted in the same people doing the same work each time we have a fund raiser. We need new Knights to step forward and assist our regulars. We have different shifts from setting up which starts usually around 2:p.m. the day of the event, to serving the food and cleanup. Kitchen help is also required at different times depending on the menu. One of the most important steps is to have a fresh crew to come in on the clean-up. They can enjoy the meal and then start their shift after. Remember Brothers, this is the Knights of Columbus. We have to have a good showing. Remember, Charity, Unity and Fraternity. If each worker that normally carries out the duties could bring in one new worker of their choice, whether it be for kitchen or clean-up we could relieve the pressure of our existing crew. If you could volunteer in advance it would be much appreciated. Advertising two weeks prior. Poster to include menu, time, date, place, cost pp, sponsored by KofC. Fund raiser for local charities. 16 Knights of Columbus Ontario State Council 393 Rymal Rd. West, Suite 201, Hamilton, ON L9B 1V2 Tel.: Toll free: Fax: CANS FOR LENT: FOOD FOR FAMILIES As part of the Knights of Columbus Food For Families program, all members are encouraged to share the spirit of Lent and conduct a 40 Cans For Lent program. Each member of Councils, along with parish communities are invited to donate ONE CAN OF FOOD FOR EACH DAY OF LENT which begins on Ash Wednesday, February 14, 2018! Every Council that collects and donates a minimum of 1000 pounds of food and contributes 100 hours of service will satisfy all four requirements for the Family Activities category of the Columbian Award. Last year Food For Families was blessed with 15,284 hours of service; 87,564 pounds of food and $95,781 in cash. This year with 40 Cans For Lent we have a golden opportunity to exceed last year s generous totals. Charity is our goal and what greater good is there in feeding the hungry? Pope Francis challenges us all to go to the perimeter and care for our brothers and sisters in need. Would you and your Council consider responding to the challenge of Pope Francis and be active in the 40 Cans For Lent 2018 program? In feeding the hungry we save lives of adults and children who rely on agencies that provide physical food with a great sense of charity. As Knights we are called to serve! Your local food bank, soup kitchen and restaurant for the poor depend on your generosity to provide food that saves lives daily! Br.
