1 St. Jude Council #5814 Serving Rocky Point and NY - 3rd District Surrounding Communities St. Jude Beacon March Volume XVI - Number III William Swiatkowski, Editor My Brothers All, GRAND KNIGHT S MESSAGE ONE KofC COUNCIL St. Jude, Pray for Us In service to one. In service to all. Our Lenten experience continues through March with activities in our parishes and at the Council. We will gather for a Lenten Soup Supper at the Council on Friday March 23rd and I hope that as many of you that can attend will come. March will also see us marching in the St. Patrick's Day parade along with our Chaplain Fr. Bill and the 4th Degree's Shea Assembly Honor Guard. Please join us in the march if you can. Afterwards we will enjoy Ralph's famous Corned Beef & Cabbage dinner at the Council. Our many efforts to grow our Council and support our parishes also continues. Our Membership Chairman John Nugent advises me that we have added 11 new members with more applicants to follow. We will be bringing candidates to a 1st Degree ceremony in March and we will host a 2nd Degree in April. Knights who have already completed these Degrees are also welcome to attend to show support to our new members. Membership drives are set up for each parish in April. We are also kicking off the Suffolk Chapter Charity Drive with weekend dates where we will meet outside King Kullen stores to sell chance books. The dates & times follow, please check your availability and plan on attending. Drives such as this one account for the majority of the Council's income. We need each Knight to contribute in some way. My wife Donna and I wish each Knight and their families a blessed Lenten season and a joyous Easter. Vivat Jesus, S.K. Eugene A. Johann Grand Knight

2 Volume XVI, Number III St. Jude Beacon - March 2018 Page 2 A Spiritual Springtime Supreme Chaplain Archbishop William E. Lori THE MERE MENTION of Lent can sometimes seem dismal, like a long, dreary day. Lent consists, in fact, of 40 days and 40 nights of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Who can endure it? Yet the word Lent does not pertain to darkness or despair. Quite the opposite. The original meaning of the word actually has to do with springtime. When Lent begins, it s winter. But by the time Lent concludes, the days are growing longer and the forsythias are in bloom. Even if there is an unseasonal snow shower, we take heart knowing that winter is having its last gasp. Lent, then, represents a new springtime in our spiritual lives. It s a time when the darkness of sin gives way to a new light of grace. SEASON OF RENEWAL Three analogies might help us see Lent in terms of a spiritual springtime. First, just as we do spring cleaning, washing away the dirt and grime that accumulates during the winter months, so too Lent is a time for cleansing our souls and our hearts, making them a beautiful dwelling place for the Lord. Or to use another comparison, spring is the season when farmers clear the land of debris and till the soil, thus giving the seeds they plant every chance to germinate. So, too, in Lent we are to clear the soil of our hearts from the debris of sin and the deadwood of hatred; by spiritual discipline, we till and enrich the soil of our souls so that the seed of God s Word, planted in us at baptism, will germinate and grow. Finally, in winter, we sometimes feel poorly due to indoor pollutants that contaminate the air we breathe. When the weather grows warmer, we open windows to let in fresh air. Just the thought of getting out of the house and taking a walk makes us feel better. But isn t it true that we sometimes insulate our hearts? When we become self-centered, we close the windows of our soul to God s love and the needs of others. Then the spiritual air we breathe becomes stuffy, even polluted, with self-pity, impurity, anger, grudges and thoughts of revenge. Lent is a time to open the windows of our souls, to allow the fresh air of God s love to circulate anew in the depths of our hearts and to get ourselves moving outward toward our brothers and sisters who are in need. A Prayer for Peace Fortify me with the grace of Your Holy Spirit and give Your peace to my soul that I may be free from all needless anxiety, solicitude and worry. Help me to desire always that which is pleasing and acceptable to You so that Your will may be my will. Saint Francesca Xavier Cabrini, THE PRACTICE OF FAITH Let s begin with prayer, or conversation with God. There are many ways to pray, but let s concentrate on one: silent, mental prayer, when we are alone with God and his voice echoes in our hearts. Such prayerful solitude requires us to turn off all our electronic devices, block out distractions and simply ask the Lord to let us see ourselves as he sees us. This is more than self-awareness. It is asking the Lord to help us measure our lives according to his standards, not our own. It is humbly asking the Lord for grace and strength to confront our overt sins as well as the hidden corruption that we often conceal from others and even from ourselves. A second Lenten practice is fasting or some other form of self-denial. This isn t the same as dieting. Rather, depriving ourselves of food is connected with the arduous process of emptying ourselves of everything that obstructs the grace of God from working in us and through us. Fasting has a way of helping us uproot our deep-seated habits of sin and our endless desire for comfort, convenience, power and esteem. The discipline of foregoing food or other comforts is a way of tilling the soil of our souls, making them receptive to God s Word. A final Lenten practice is almsgiving, which includes giving of ourselves and our resources to those who are in need. The practice of charity is how we open the windows of our souls to God s love, forgetting our own wants and needs and concentrating instead on the needs of others, especially the poor and vulnerable. When we open our hearts in love to those in need, the stale air of self-centeredness dissipates as the fresh air of Jesus self-giving love circulates through our inmost being, and we are thus spiritually reinvigorated. For us as Knights, this practice of charity should be second nature. Prayer, fasting and almsgiving are, in fact, inseparable. As St. Peter Chrysologus (+450) taught: Fasting is the soul of prayer, almsgiving is the lifeblood of fasting. When you fast, see the fasting of others. If you want God to know you are hungry, know that another is hungry. If you want mercy, show mercy. In this way, may our Lenten observance lead us to experience a renewed life in Christ and joy in the Holy Spirit. From KofC.org 1/01/2018 Copyright Knights of Columbus KofC.org Respect for and development of human life require peace. Peace is not merely the absence of war, and it is not limited to maintaining a balance of powers between adversaries. Peace can not be attained on earth without safeguarding the goods of persons, free communication among men, respect for the dignity of persons and peoples, and the assiduous practice of fraternity. Peace is "the tranquility of order." Peace is the work of justice and the effect of charity Earthly peace is the image and fruit of the peace of Christ, the messianic The Corner of Faith Catechism of Peace "Prince of Peace." 3 Volume XVI, Number III St. Jude Beacon - March 2018 Page 3 My Brothers and Sisters in Christ, District Deputy s Message As we all know we are in the midst of the Lenten Season. Many of you have given something up for Lent and are faithfully not eating meat on Fridays. And that s great. And we all know that Lent is the 40 day period that comes before Easter and begins on Ash Wednesday. But what does it really mean? Lent is a great opportunity for us to prepare for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. And there are several ways that we can do this. Yes, fasting and self-sacrifice are certainly two of them. But often these things become more about us then God. The whole purpose of Lent is for us to use this time to grow closer to God. To grow our relationship with God. Prayer is always the most obvious way that we have to grow our relationship with God. Lent is a time of Spiritual renewal. A time to prepare ourselves to honor the memory of Christ s passion, death and resurrection. This is a time to bring ourselves back in tune with this divine plan. The Gospel of Mark tells us that the very first words spoken to us by Jesus were The kingdom of God is at Hand. Repent and believe in the Gospel. These are the words spoken to us as we receive our ashes on Ash Wednesday. So Fast, Sacrifice, give to the poor. But don t forget to take the time to pray. Try attending a Stations of the Cross during this season. Use this time to take the opportunity to grow your relationship with God and prepare yourself for his arrival on Easter. In March we also Celebrate Founders Day. The weekend of March 10th & 11th Councils in the Order are asked to conduct, if possible, a Church Membership Drive. The week of March 12th-18th is Council Outreach Week. All Councils are encouraged to conduct charitable service projects during this week in honor of Fr. McGivney. The Following week, the week of March 19-25th Councils are encouraged to hold an Admission Degree, also in Honor of our Founder, Fr. McGivney. And we end the month with our Day of Prayer for the Unborn Child on March 25th. For more information on this Prayer Service, visit the Culture of Life section of the K of C website at kofc.org/service. McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and to lead the young to the generous service of their neighbor. Through the example of his life and virtue may we follow your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church.
