1 ST. MA R Y S E PI SCO PAL CHURC H Cry s ta l Lak e, I ll i noi s M ay, Vol.40, No.4 Rector s Page The Rev. Fran Holliday Dear Friends and Parishioners of St. Mary s, It is hard to believe that we are approaching the Feast of Pentecost, which marks the 50 th day after Easter. Pentecost, which we will celebrate on May 24 th, marks the coming of the Holy Spirit when the apostles were driven out into the world to preach the gospel and build the church. Like the apostles, we are also called to go beyond our locked doors, to leave our fears and hesitations behind, and to take new risks to spread the good news. Many of you may have heard of the diocesan program called Thrive, which our parish has been involved with over the last year and a half. Thrive is a program which helps equip congregations to reach out beyond their walls and to think outside the box and connect with the wider community in which they find themselves. The Thrive team from St. Mary s, which includes Marge Smith, Jim Krueger, Ann Henslee, and myself, is meeting with other congregations around the diocese who are also part of the program. Each congregation is charged with developing a project which will help them be more visible and active in their community. Your team is working on making connections with community schools, programs and organizations and giving a lot of thought to how our church can offer something to meet a need in the community. We are attending diocesan meetings quarterly, and receiving training and support as we go forward. Please know that I am out in the community meeting with the Chamber, various not-for-profit social services agencies as well as the schools, and I am confident that as I get to know the community and our team continues our work we will identify ways for us as a congregation to offer something to the Crystal Lake community at large. We are of course already doing this through PADS, the Crystal Lake Food Pantry, and involvement in the CROP walk, and our hope is that our new found project will help us be more connected and known in our community as we strive to be a visible sign of Christ right here in McHenry County. We will keep you posted of course and communicate our work to you as we go forward. Let us continue to welcome the newcomer and the stranger, let us continue to reach out and go well beyond our walls to live the gospel and let us do it boldly. Blessings, Fran+ Vol.40, No.4 Page
2 Senior Luncheon St. Mary Seniors (SMS) please remember to mark your calendars for Saturday, May 2, 11:30 a.m. in the Great Hall, to meet for a tasty lunch, desert, and great conversation. Please contact Amy Noe at 815/ , ( parishofc@stmaryepiscopal.org) to let her know you will be attending. We look forward to seeing you on May 2nd! Prayer Vigil for Marriage Equality St. Mary s, Tuesday May 5th at 7:30 p.m. (Refreshments to follow in the Great Hall.) On April 28th, the U.S. Supreme court heard oral arguments regarding a state s right to deny marriage licenses to same sex couples with the decision being made public in June. We are joining hundreds of churches around the nation that are having prayer vigils during the next two weeks. Please join us as we pray with and for all couples and families who will be affected by the court s decision. Parents: Share Your Graduate News!! Once again we find graduation season upon us. How does that time go by so fast? St. Mary s would like to offer parents of its high school, college or graduate school students the opportunity of sharing with parishioners, items of interest about their graduate i.e., scholarships granted, awards received, school graduated from, school to be attended in the Fall, employment plans, etc. A simple write-up can be submitted to the Parish Office, either by or given to the Parish Administrator, to be included in the next issue of. 23 rd Annual National Letter Carrier s Food Drive There are two ways you can help the Crystal Lake Food Pantry make this annual food drive a success. First, please collect and bag non-perishable food items, and place the bag by your mailbox on Saturday, May 9 th. Your letter carrier will collect and deliver the bags to the food drive. Secondly, you and your family/friends/neighbors can stop by the Algonquin Township Building (3702 Rte 14 in CL) in the afternoon, Saturday, May 9 th. All donated food will be transported there, and we hope for many hands to help lighten the load of sorting and boxing the food. If you d like to volunteer, please stop by from 4:00 7:00 p.m. (in the back building) to be part of the action. Questions, call the pantry at Thanks for your support in feeding those in need. This prayer service is sponsored by St. Mary s Episcopal Church, Crystal Lake, and St. Paul s Episcopal Church, McHenry IL. Sunday School Planning for Thanks to all parents for helping to share the good news about St. Mary s youth! A meeting will be held on Saturday, May 9th, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (lunch included) to discuss and brainstorm how we want to go forward with our Sunday School and Children s Worship next September. Parents with church school age children and anyone else interested in our church school are invited to attend. Please RSVP to the parish office as soon as possible. We will be discussing Children s Worship and how we want to continue to shape this important ministry. We will also be discussing curriculum for Sunday School: What works great and what do we want to change? This date was chosen because it seems like many could attend before summer vacations begin. We also have some ideas for some fun family activities over the summer. Memorial Day The Parish Offices will be closed on Monday, May 25 in observance of Memorial Day. Forward Day by Day The booklet, Forward Day by Day, provides daily bible readings and meditations, which many parishioners find very helpful. The next quarter s edition, for the months of May/June/July, is now available on a Narthex table, priced at a very reasonable 85 cents. If you haven t previously used this daily devotional guide, please pick up a copy and try it. Page 2
