1 THE EPISTLE St. Philip s Episcopal Church 342 East Wood Street Palatine, Illinois (847) February 2016 A Letter from Senior Warden, Bob Purcell Dear Fellow Parishioners, By the time you read this Epistle, we will have held our Annual Meeting. We will have started a new year. In my mind, at St. Philip s, we start the new year more than once-- first in Advent, then on New Year s Eve, and finally after the annual parish meeting. That gives us several opportunities to re-calculate and start anew. Our Parish is very thankful for the extraordinary hard work and contribution of our retiring senior warden Lisa Gillette, as well as the retiring Vestry members Madeline Rorrie and Karen Cappello. In the next few weeks and months, we will start the process of seeking a new Priest-in-Charge. A Priest-in-Charge generally assumes the responsibility of a Rector with the potential, but not the obligation, of 1 1

2 becoming the Rector. This gives the Parish and the Priest the opportunity of getting to know one another of discerning the strengths of our mutual shared ministry. During the process of seeking a Priest-in-Charge, we will worship with several supply clergies. Many of us find Rev. Jimmy Swarthout uplifting, energizing, and fun. We are thankful for his many gifts. We are also thankful for the Tuesday morning service. If you have the opportunity to join us, please do so. Reports from the St. Philip s Book club speak of warm, lively, community discussions. Our mission stays the same, Seek, Share, Serve, and Shine. We are grateful for all of you who strengthen our community and live our mission. If you have suggestions or questions, please do not hesitate to give me a call. Peace Be With You. 5 by Jack Notzen A hearty thanks goes out to Father Jimmy Swarthout for his service as our Celebrant and Preacher this January and February. Originally ordained as a Roman Catholic priest, Fr. Jimmy is married to a former Roman Catholic nun. They have a large family, with children, grandchildren. Nieces and nephews. He has served as an Episcopal priest for the Diocese of Chicago priest for more than thirty-two years. This includes ministry with parishes in Rockford, Crystal Lake, Algonquin, West Dundee and McHenry. Father Jimmy also has professional credentials in social work and addictions counseling. He is appointed to the Governor s Mental Health Services Strategic Planning Task Force and co-chairs the task force s Children and Adolescent Committee. His resume of community service is lengthy. Among other things, he is the founder of the St. Paul Diaper Bank Partnership and a founding member of the board of directors of the National Diaper Bank Network. He has served as an adjunct faculty member for Columbia and Webster universities. He has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in counseling and leadership. Father Jimmy also has been working with Firefighters and Paramedics that encounter traumatic events in the line of duty. To deal with the stress of their jobs, some may turn to substance abuse. Father Jimmy s counseling can offer them the opportunity for lasting recovery by incorporating occupational factors into the treatment process. 5 5

It was a huge success with between thirty-five and forty people enjoying the delicious spaghetti dinner with all the fixings! Those from St. Philip s who provided food included: Madeline Rorrie, Billie Tuttle, Peggy Davis, Judy Zawacke, Joe Harrell, Jack Notzen, Sophie Obara, Peggy Morrill, Marion Gronlund, Liz Huth-Taylor, Mona Diaz, Ginger Knowles, Jeanne Svendson, LuAnn Kelly, Janie Jenssen, Nancy Holian, and Bob and Linda Purcell. Once again the St. Philip congregation has demonstrated their caring feelings for the less fortunate! 7 News from the Book Club by Jack Notzen On Monday, January 11, LuAnn Kelly led a discussion of I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai. This was the story of "the girl who stood up for education and was shot by the Talaban. Winter is the perfect time for reading and attending The Book Club. Please join us on February 8 th at 7:00 p. m., in the Foote Library, as we discuss The Girl on the Train, by Paula Hawkins. Jack Notzen will lead the discussion of this New York Times bestseller --- there she sits, the girl on the train. What she sees, gazing out the window, will change everything. We will discuss the entire book. All are welcome. 7
